Just click the button with red on it to launch the playlist and click the scan files button and navigate to your CD. You should be able to get more information on using GAP in the readme files and from the GAP site.

Okay, you’re talking to a completely computer illiterate guy. Does this GAP program explain itself, or will I need the help of a master (ie: you) to get this done?

The audio can be heard/extracted with the Game Audio Player, or GAP. Just Google “Game Audio Player”

    Hello Collector,

thanks a lot for posting the soundtrack – it’s great and there is no way to get it where I live (middle Europe).

In the track “Happy Minstrels”, in the middle part, I am getting some loud clicking noices probably from some errors during mp3 ripping process. Please, do you think that you could re-rip and re-post this track, or send the correct version to me via e-mail?

    Anyway, thanks again.

Your best bet is to wait for a copy to pop up on eBay, or you could try your local computer stores. I’ve seen copies of this (CD only, no box) floating around in bargain bins from time to time. Actually, there’s a bunch of copies on eBay right now.

There is a known bug in this game where at a certain point, saves become corrupt. You need to install the Torin’s Passage patch, available on Sierra’s ftp server at ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/patches/pc/torinpat.exe

The patch makes previous saves unusable. However, the game lets you start from any chapter, so you shouldn’t have to replay too much.

“For some reason, this forum never notified me of any replies to my post. I apologize for not seeing these until now.”

There’s been a change how this is handled. If you used to receive email notifications but don’t anymore, you need to go to “My Account” (while you are in the forums, it’s the third item in the options at the top of every page) and then press “Request Email Notification of New Postings To This Message Board”. Note that you have to do this for each of the different boards that you enter from the main SierraGamers.com site.

The two error messages that I have received while trying to save, load, start an new game ect. are: -The classic message from Windows: “This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shudown”
In the details there are information about the values in the registers, the memory contends in position CS:EIP, the contends stored in the stack and the message: “Sierrawh caused a general protection fault in module at 0000:00030950″. -Message for Sierrawh: “We’re sorry, you have encountered an internal game error. Please restart your
game and restore a saved game. If you have continued problems, please report the following information to Sierra Technical Support:
Error 47: Not an object: $4
Script 64999/$48d”. The code number after the dollar character (“$”) in line “Error 47…” is different in each message. For the same ruined saved game sometimes I get the first error message (from Windows) and sometimes I get the second one. Can someone help me solve this problem?
    Thank you for any help.

This procedure may seem long but while playing and saving at the same time I make various combinations which end up in this problem. The problem occurs even if I save the game using the same name (for example: load torin1, save as torin1, load torin1, save as torin1 etc.) which makes it ever more serious. It might be helpful to mention that the problem doesn’t happen if I repetitively load or save the game. It occurs only after 8 repetitions of loading and saving the game are completed. These repetitions can be one after another or happen over a period of time with multiple saving or loading procedures intervene between them. To explain what I mean better, I will describe it with an example: If I play the game for a period of 8 days (assuming that I load the game once, when I start playing in, and I save it once or more times) then in the ninth day I won’t be able to save the game and the only thing I will be able to do is start a previous game and then hurry in order to reach the point of the ruined saved game so that I can continue playing until the older saved game is ruined as well (in which case I will have to repeat this procedure with another saved game).

The game’s version that I have is the bulk version that uses the program Sierraw.exe in order to run the game in Windows. All the patches come with the game and are stored in folder E:\Patches (I play the game while the original CD game is in drive E. The file Resource.win is properly configured).

    My system properties are:
    CPU: Pentium II 233
    Memory: 64 MB
    Hard Drive: 4.00 GB
    Operating System: Windows 98

I tried slowing down the CPU (down to 10%) with a program called Turbo.exe but the problem still remains which means that it probably is not CPU related.

Actually, I have been with the team for almost 2 years now. The fact that you do not know who I am, makes me believe that your opinions of our game are based on VERY old and outdated information which have changed so drastically, that even I am unaware of it as a Director.

You may not realise this but the PR material put out over the last several years (by your team) have on a fundamental level represented KQ9 in a wide variety of guises. At one time it may have been an adventure game in the classic point and click style, while at another it boasted enough RPG elements that it really couldn’t qualify as an adventure game anymore.
    …”
Being the Assistant Director of Public Relations, I am fully aware of all KQ9 PR material posted over the past 2 years and not once was it ever described as an RPG or featuring RPG elements. But regardless of what was said 2+ years ago, I have read the plot entirely, seen 2D and 3D artwork created by the team, and work with the game engine itself almost everyday. I can assure you that there are no RPG elements in King’s Quest IX, and that it is an adventure game. 🙂

Well, I meant better in terms of acting ability and expression while matching the same vocal tone, but you can listen to the sound clip hear for yourself. When we post more sound clips in the future, you will better understand what I mean.

“… (by Barry) I just browsed through their forums and they’re really vague about a release date. I get the impression that the final release date of KQ9 will most likely coincide with that of Duke Nukem Forever ……”
The release date will be announced when we are ready. If you are subscribed to our Newsletter, you be notified as soon as we make the announcement, as well as other important updates.

I definitely agree. KQIX is a lot bigger than any previous King’s Quest game, in every aspect. 🙂

    Great replies —

Interesting information about Japan. Which countries outside North America have embraces Sierra games the most back in the late 80s and early 90s?

As for logos, I was referring to the mountain logo that embraced the early Quest games. I am not quite partial to the more recent “S” logo. Such a shame that you had to plunk a bit of cash to keep marketing fools happy. Crack that whip, I say!

Finally, Broderbund appears to be still around — http://www.broderbund.com  — but they appears to be owned by Riverdeep. It’s interesting that the Sierra website claims a copyright from 1979 to 2005. Yeouch.

Best of wishes for your and your wife’s future efforts. I am looking forward toward that book project your wife is doing. 🙂

SIERRAW is the Window’s executable. To use DOSBox, you must run the DOS version of the games. Use INSTALL.EXE, not SETUP.EXE. It also sound like you have the extensions hidden for registered file types, so you will not see “.EXE”, only “INSTALL”, “SIERRA”, “SIERRAW”, etc.

I can install the games using the sierra setup utility, and that puts the games on my start-programs bar. But when I run them they don’t do anything. Usually a black window will open and then minimize and close. I know about the compatibility settings, but even switching qg4 to win98 and 256 colors won’t allow the game to run.

When I go to the Sierra folder on my c drive I can’t find any executables to drag into dosbox. I only see icons, screensavers, hep files, and something called sierraw which does nothing. I don’t know how to get any more specific really, I was just wondering what steps other people had to go through to run the games.

Very nice, Christina.. and I agree with Gildor, please, show some pictures!

I remember the day when a book company called ‘St. George’s Rare Books’ came to my town. Now THAT was cool; pure coincidence, mind. This is cooler, though..

Also drove by a place this year called ‘La Costa Lotta’.

Can anyone tell me the best way to run these games? QG4 is particularly irksome, as is KQ6. I have dosbox but cannot figure out how to run the collections on it. I have also tried the win98 compatibility options in XP but I just can’t get them to work. Any help, whether detailed or general rules of thumb would be appreciated. Thanks….”
Exactly what’s the problem with both the games? Not much to go on at the moment.

    “… (by T.J. Griesenbrock) Hey Ken —

I am currently a developer working as a consultant, inspired into this field thanks to Sierra games in the past. One of my favorite game (which happens to be the first game I actually purchased with my own cash, instead of being gifted) is Thexder. In fact, my old online alias (Zelpheri) was based on the name of one of your imported games, Zeliard. To this day, my laptop have the main logo screen as its wallpaper.

I am curious on the history behind developing a relationship with Game Arts (and one other Japanese game company which made Sorcerian – I have a feeling Game Arts only had the license for it) – what started this move? Why did the relationship end?

Also, who came up with the design for the Sierra logo? What was the best implementation of that logo in a game? (For example, Space Quest 3 had the sweeping in the logo animation on EGA/VGA machines.) While growing up, I have always envision an actual picture of the mountain itself, sequing into the logo, a la Paramount.

You know, have you ever envisioned that Broderbund would be around longer than Sierra as a business? I remember an old article where the staff of Sierra and Broderbund would go white-water rafting, and pondificate on merging forces. Sierra Print Shop… Where in Sierra is Carmen Sandiego? Mind-boggling.

Thank you for being a major part of my childhood. I still remember fondly at being 14 and trying to pass that Leisure Suit Larry’s Adult test….”

    Good questions…

I don’t remember how the Japanese connection occurred. We had a consultant we hired (Ed Nagano I think was his name) from Japan. I wanted to sell our games in Japan, and try to find Japanese games to sell in the US. Ed took me around to meet the various Japanese developers, and started Sierra Japan.

The effort had mixed success. We never licensed in any games that were megahits, and our games never really did big numbers in Japan. We didn’t lose any money, but it wasn’t the bonanza I thought it would be.

As to Sierra’s logo – that is a LONG story. I always had a set of basic rules that I lived by. Sometimes these were referred to as “Ken’s Laws.” They weren’t written down, and even tended to change from month to month — but, a very consistent law of mine was that as much money as possible should be focused on building great product. I didn’t like spending money on fancy buildings. We were not a big advertiser. We hardly did trade shows. We were big on direct marketing — but, that fit another of my laws about selling to customers who were “in the family.”

I always considered logos as somewhat silly. Every time we hired someone new in marketing, they started the battle for a new logo, new stationary, new business cards, etc. I always compared it to dogs marking their turf. This made me very unpopular with the marketing department, and popular with customers. Money spent on product was ok. Money spent on logos wasn’t.

Every few years, I would concede this point, and our logo would shift shapes or colors. I would have $300,000 less for product development, but marketing would be happy (for a few days). Generally, customers didn’t care.

As to Broderbund: I miss those days!!! As to which company lasted longer, I don’t know the answer. Are their still Broderbund employees? I haven’t checked for over a decade.

Barry: I’m hardly likely to crap on up in my ivory tower when to the average fan it’s meaningless 🙂

Johann: I completely agree. And one of my pet hates is tech support advice, esp. from Ebay sellers, recommending compatibility modes as a solution. Grr.
However, XP is still fine to run a lot of Sierra games! It’s simply a fact. If you’re not talking about Sierra games, you’d be at the wrong forums, wouldn’t ya? 😉
