ParticipantWow, that has got to be an amazing collection of software. Too bad I didn’t know of this sooner, I could have added some individual titles to my collection 🙂 Let’s hope an enterprising individual is out there who has money and will be able to deal with the collection properly in terms of preserving some pieces and selling the others.

ParticipantDaphne – the story is coming along nicely! I’m really enjoying reading it! Even the deaths are funny and you kept the spirit of the original game. Keep up the good work!

ParticipantOh, man! Come on! Bruce Campbell for sure!
Bruce Campbell is a legend of B-Grade gold (Evil Dead 1, 2, 3).
And Space Quest really plays into that style, only B-Grade Sci-Fi, rather than horror.
I think Bruce would be perfect. 🙂 Get Sam Raimi directing, and you’ve got a masterpiece!

PS – Aaron, that’s a nice camera you’ve got there!

ParticipantThanks DJ!
Ken & Roberta are quite supportive of our project. 🙂 They were both pretty impressed with our screenshots too! You can read more in the chat log.
You’re right that Ken & Roberta can’t get involved with our project because of legal reasons. Roberta also once mentioned that creativity-wise, it’s best to just have ONE main designer in charge (Cesar Bittar) or the end-product will suffer from too many creative differences, like King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity did.
We’ll be releasing more and more goodies to our site as we get closer to the game’s release. As for a demo, the closest thing to that would probably be a public beta with just a couple of scenes, since we don’t want to spoil too much before the game’s actual release. 😉

ParticipantLOL, that is really pretty cool. I remember that was one of the articles I read often, because I was interested in Mortal Kombat but my parents wouldn’t let me play it at the time.

ParticipantI’m not sure if I had posted this earlier (and I hope this isn’t too offtopic), but I wanted to let Ken Williams know about a time when I used one of his “InterAction” columns for an English class assignment. Way back in freshman year of HS (more than 10 years ago) my class was reading Fahrenheit 451 and one of our assignments was to bring to class an article that talked about censorship in some way. It so happened that that same week the latest “InterAction” had arrived at my house and in it Ken writes about the newest and upcoming Sierra products, but also talks for a bit about censorship and even mentions Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 in the article. I brought in Ken’s article and the teacher loved it so much I even got extra credit points (if I remember no one else really brought in acceptable articles). In fact, my teacher actually asked that I photocopy the article so everyone in the class had a copy, then devoted the entire class period to reading the article outloud to us, word-for-word, and then instructed us to identify Ken’s thesis, etc. I thought the whole thing was pretty neat.

ParticipantJust checked out http://www.kq9.org — the fan project looks spectacular. Way to go, everyone! Am looking forward to its release.
Was also curious… (I’m new here and apologize if this has been covered elsewhere) but what are Roberta and Ken’s feelings about the project? I noticed they were guests for the May 15th chat, so my guess is they’re at least generally supportive/encouraging. I’m not sure what all the legal copyright issues involved are, and I would guess they probably couldn’t have any direct involvement in the project, but it’s nice to see they’re well aware of all the effort being put into KQ9. Probably a huge treat for them (as it is for an old time Sierra fan like me) to see the ongoing interest in the King’s Quest adventures.
Also, any plans to release a playable or nonplayable demo showing some of the interface, animation, cut scenes, etc?

ParticipantMy recollection is that only the Amiga versions were distributed through EA. EA made a major commitment to the Amiga, whereas we really didn’t focus there, and our the Amiga version of our products generally weren’t that great. We did some great product for the Amiga, like Frogger, but overall, we didn’t make the same level of investment as EA did — so, it made more sense to use their distribution than our own.
No one at Sierra liked the idea of distributing ANYTHING through a competitor. I saw it as EA’s fair reward for having done a great job on the Amiga. Our relationship with EA didn’t last long.

ParticipantBy the way I just found this today, it appears you can buy the CD here:

ParticipantYes, various Sierra titles were distributed by EA.

ParticipantKen,
Did you distribute King’s Quest 2,3 through Electronic Arts? I own the original King’s Quest 2 and 3 with the fliplid and I don’t remember them coming in a cellophane wrapping or with an “Electronic Arts” sticker on them. Any information would be great!
Thanks,
Troy

ParticipantI’m a bit bias, but I’d have to say Sierra HANDS DOWN. Maybe its just me, but Sierra games just had something special about them… they created a serious sense of nostalgia within myself. LucasArts games were just another ‘game’ to play. With the exception of Monkey Island 3, I have no desire to even go back and replay them. I’ll sit and play King’s Quest 3, Space Quest 4, or Gold Rush any chance I get even though I know exactly what to do to finish the game. That’s an attribute Sierra games have that no one can match.
As for who had a “better run” I still think Sierra wins. In my opinion thier run started in 1984 with King’s Quest 1 and continued until 1998 with Quest for Glory V. That’s a solid 14 year run. I don’t know when LucasArts’s run started or ended, but it doesn’t matter and I don’t care. Sierra wins no matter what.

ParticipantThanks! I got it to work!
I have one problem though! Now for some reasons I can’t cast spells in KQ3, it won’t let me read the book, (it says something about how I’m not experienced enough to be doing it or something..) now it’s been a really long time since I’ve played this, so am I just skipping a step?
Thanks!

ParticipantDon’t use the Collection’s installer. For the AGI games (I-III), just copy the games’ folders to your harddrive. They don’t need to be installed. For IV-VI and the remake of I, just go into each game’s folder on the CD and run the install or setup there.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantWhat happens is when I go to install it, I get some error about an echo or something. How did you get it to install?
Thanks

ParticipantYou don’t often see actual fake items on eBay. What you often get are inaccurate descriptions and things like that, however. I do not know all the box variations in this early era. It’s possible that as these are the EA distributed versions, the boxes don’t have the flap covers. I think that is the likliest explanation. A second possibility is that the boxes were “re-sealed”. You can always ask the seller for more detailed photos and check out the seller’s feedback comments / rating.

ParticipantI’ll ask again (sorry that I’m nagging, but I’d really be interested in the answer).. did you forget to ask Roberta or does she not have the time to answer those questions?
Thanks!

Participantif anyone’s still having the swamp lock-up problem, you could try to start the game using DOSBox, then put set the game to Text, lower the volume and detail to 0 (keep the game in windowed mode, not fullscreen) and get through that scene, then save and play the game as you usually would from that restore point.
It worked like a charm for me :), if it doesn’t work, try messing with the CPU cycle settings (ctrl-F11 decreases and ctrl-F12 increases) or the Frameskip settings (ctrl-F8 increases and ctrl-F7 decreases) 🙂

ParticipantI just hired a programmer to rewrite the message boards. I had it on my “to do” list, but kept not having time. The rewrite is his only priority, so unless he flakes out, the rewrite should happen quickly (within a few weeks).
I’ll make sure he does this as part of the rewrite.
I can’t talk about the new features yet, because we’re still analysing other boards to see what we like and don’t like.
Thank you,
Ken WUnknown,Unknown
ParticipantGood mention. I’m certain this has been previously suggested. I know that a forum overhaul is next on Ken’s to-do list.

ParticipantKQ3 perfectly works under XP, without DosBox. In what particularly problem?

ParticipantThat submit link was just supposed to lead to this forum anyway, so you’re in the right place. The way pages are called has changed from time to time so I’ll have to update that. I’ll add your link to the listings. Great site, with lots of info. It will certainly be useful as we get our archival projects around here launching (more details to come about that later on). What I also find cool about your site is that it’s not just Sierra stuff. You have tons of cool stuff about other computer games / companies.
