ParticipantI don’t have any trouble with setting up and running DOSBox (I’ve been using PC’s since the late 80’s), but quite frequently settings have to be changed on the fly or just before running a specific game to make it work right, and most people just don’t want that hassle.
And yeah, DOSBox’s system requirements are just ridiculous. Why is it you require a 1GHz PC to run a game that came out ten (or more) years ago? And forget about running anything that has a semblance of polygonal graphics in it.

ParticipantClick the Advanced button. Go to the Adapter tab. Click the “List all modes” button.

ParticipantAh-ha… here’s those box pictures that Ken posted:

ParticipantHave you played the AGD games through and given them a chance? I think QFG2VGA is going to be their best yet and come closer to approaching the magic that was Sierra.

ParticipantMy computer is fast enough for dosbox, so I tend not to notice. It’s not that the program is slow, but it requires some juice to run later games (when I say Larry 7 I mean that it runs flawlessly speed and sound)
As for fiddly….? If you ever tinkered with the real dos then its not much different. Its also much easier than attempting to install windows 98 on a new pc and messing with sound card drivers and the like.
This program makes things MUCH easier:

I have all my games in a list and it requires no tweaking to add more games. One day I’m going to burn all these to a DVD so that I never have to setup my dos classics again! 🙂

ParticipantFor some reason I still only play the originals. I’ve seen AGD work but it just seems to “loose” something when it is remade by someone else.

ParticipantI still find DOSBox too fiddly and much too slow to play anything other than adventure games (though of course it is adventure games we’re discussing here). ScummVM is fast, highly compatible, and includes all manner of nice features that DOSBox doesn’t. I just hope they change the name at some point – “Scumm” (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) Virtual Machine doesn’t really reflect the multi-engine nature it is in the process of assuming.

ParticipantProbably because Lorelei Shannon did most of the design and writing on KQ7.

ParticipantYeah someone told me that Ken posted some good covers, that’s why I came here to look but I couldn’t find anything through searching. I already got those Space Quest scans. Those were excellent scans and they represent basically the quality I’m aiming for. They’re what inspired me to search for more box scans.

ParticipantI went into control panel and display. I tried moving the bar as far as it would go and it stopped at 800×600. Is there another way to change it?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantSorry! I didn’t know you could just edit your post. I’m so used to MSN. I ended up making a new one.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantYou need to set your resolution down to 640×480 256 colors before you can install or play the game. Compatibility mode does not change this soon enough before the game checks it. Go to your advanced display settings to change to this display mode befor you install or play KQ5.

ParticipantI just got the King’s Quest collection series and I’m having alot of trouble running all the games. I have now figured out how to use the earlier King’s Quest games 1-4 in DOSBox thanks to all the posts I read here already but I can’t get mixed up mother goose to work. Every time it opens, it runs for a minute and then it closes out and the computer comes up with an error message. Any suggestions?

ParticipantThe easiest thing to do is click the start menu. Go to Accessories then Compatibility Wizard. When it asks whether you want to choose it from a list or use program in the cd-rom click cd-rom. It will ask you if you want to change the compatibility mode. I suggest you change it to windows 95 because torin’s passage is an older game. Click next. It will ask you if you want to run the program in all these different screen options, pick 256 colors then next again. It will open the program and ask you if you always want to run it in this mode click yes. Then it will ask you if you want to send the information to microsoft…that one’s up to you.

ParticipantThank You so much! I had no idea how to make anything work in DOSBox until I read your message about dragging files to it.

ParticipantThere was something about Llewdor that just drew me in. The desert, the ocean, the “town” area, Mannanon’s mountain. There was a lot wrapped up into one place.

ParticipantWell, I did some more research and came across this thread: http://www.questformoreglory.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1075
on the questformoreglory.com forums, and it got me up and running fine. Hopefully it’ll help anyone else with problems!

ParticipantWow. Do you have it in the original boxes or in another form? And are they early releases (such as Mystery House etc.) or late 80’s, mid-90’s (such as Larry, Laura Bow, Phatasmagoria etc.)
P.S.: The Museum idea is great. I would go just to see the museum.

ParticipantTo set 256 colors and 640×480 resolution on XP:
Right-click your desktop
Select Properties
Select Settings tab
Click Advanced
Select Adapter tab
Click List All Modes
Select 640×480 and 256 colors from the listDo this before you launch the game. (Putting it in 640×480 resolution will run the game in full screen mode.) When you’re done playing, you can set your color depth and resolution back on the Settings tab (no need to go through all the steps).
Compatibility mode also has settings for 256 colors and 640×480 resolution, but it doesn’t work for many of the Sierra titles. To use compatibility mode, right-click on the .exe file, select Properties, and go to the Compatibility tab.

ParticipantThat of course would be dependent on how busy Ken is these days, and I suspect he’s quite busy. Also, because of time zones of fans around the world, it would be hard to get a time that’s good for everyone unless we do multiple chat sessions. As part of the archival activities I’m coordinating, sooner or later I’m going to start an area where you can ask questions to most of the “big” Sierra names. Those questions will all be collected and the best questions will be chosen to form some of the most comprehensive interviews ever done. I think this would be a better way to 1) allow fans to ask questions 2) ensure as many fans as possible get to have their questions asked 3) make it most convenient and give lots of time for the Sierra folk to answer the questions in detail. Stay tuned!

ParticipantWhat a great question! I really liked the land of Serenia in King’s Quest 5. And, the entire Land of the Green Isles in King’s Quest 6. I too would have loved to see some of those isles expanded, especially the Isle of the Mists.

ParticipantHomeworld was a science fiction 3D strategy game. I think another company developed it and Sierra released it.

ParticipantCool. I know Ken posted a zip file with a bunch of box art at one point – I don’t remember where it was, but the scans weren’t very large. Look forward to seeing box art scans as well as lots of other scans through SierraGamers in the future. In the meantime, you can check out SpaceQuest.net for scans of Space Quest box art.

Participanthttp://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/BBSForumPage.asp/f/304/p/1
The third page of that forum only shows a few topics, and pages 4 and 5 of the forum show no topics.
And this seems to happen on other boards all around as well.

ParticipantAfter VI, it kinda leaves open the whole black cloak thing. Actually, besides King Graham’s family (what is their last name anyway?), the black cloak brotherhood turned out to be one of the only continuous threads in the series. I feel like it’s unresolved, like the heart of the organization is still at large. Even though I love VII, it seems like that was the beginning of the wheels sort of falling off of King’s Quest. It was trying different things and not selling as well, and by VIII it had totally changed.
