ParticipantThe hint book for HOC tells all about the making of the game. It states “Along with the use of live actors came the tricky task of combining the actors’ images with the over 200 hand-painted background images. Once each of the photoshoots were complete and matched with their storyboard sketches, they were entered into the computer using color scanners…and then cut out using electronic paint programs. Once the actors were laid on top of the digitized images of the hand-painted backgrounds and the two elements were blended together.”

ParticipantBut were they real persons or were they painted over (like Space Quest 5)?

ParticipantHeart of China also used actors in front of a screen.

ParticipantFan game fanatics might also do well to check out http://www.sq7.org.
I wonder how Ken and Roberta feel about fans taking up the mantle and extending the series…?

ParticipantHi,
I was recently thrilled to win an Ebay auction on The Colonel’s Bequest. I didn’t own a playable copy of it before, not for years. It was working fine on my Gateway laptop, and I think I used VDMSound, but then it started having problems.
VDMSound wouldn’t load it up, I had foolishly switched the audio setting and I still can’t seem to find the right setting in order to have sound (although I did before). Also sometimes it won’t load up at all, if I just go into it through DOS.
I wanted to download DOSBox, but that website is confusing. Anyway, my two main problems are the sound and the irregularity in whether the game opens at all. I’ve read some of your pointers, and have set it for 256 colors and the resolution needed, but that doesn’t solve it.
Please help! I love this game so much, and wish to play it on my laptop. You can also email me atArchypoet@aol.com if you have tips, or just post here.
Thanks,
RyanUnknown,Unknown
ParticipantAhhh… TSN. I met my fiancee (soon to be wife) on there 12 years ago, and we’ve been a couple 10 our of those 12 years. I actually moved from NY to California for her. TSN was the best! I was on it from 1993 until 1996. Was such a shame when it turned into INN, as it seemed to become less fun after that =( I check fauxinn.com often, but the project seems to be stuck. Unfortunately, I ended up in the technical side of IT, not the programming side… although I can do C++ and Java, just not very well 😉 Anybody ever find out whether AOL or whoever will care if it is resurrected? Oh, and Ken, I just wanted to thank you and your wife for all the Sierra games in the 80s… King’s Quest, Hero’s Quest (Still like that name better than QFG) and of course Space Quest! If it weren’t for those, I never would have found TSN, and wouldn’t have found my true love!

ParticipantHey Matthew,
Try increasing your audio buffer size- open your resurce.cfg (for DOS) or resource.win (for WIN) file in Notepad and change ‘audiosize= whatever’ to a higher number, say, 128 more.

ParticipantYeah, it’s OK as long as your files aren’t too big. I haven’t checked it out, but if Ken has any objections I’m sure you’ll hear about it. If your files start getting big, you’ll have to host them yourself.

ParticipantMost are forever gone. Some do pop up on eBay. Some art we have acquired for our archival projects, but it has been mostly photocopied material and not original material from the King’s Quest games. We continue to work to get original art and design material from all of Sierra’s games for our archival projects.

ParticipantI have created a walk sequence using Microstation (CADD) and added it to the web game. I am having trouble with the parseInt() function of javascript so it only works one time and then the web page has to be refreshed.
Brandon is it OK to post this test project on this web site?

ParticipantHere is a Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 cursor file to resemble Laura Bows spy glass if anyone wants it. You must “browse” to it in your mouse utility under the control panel.

ParticipantThanks, I really try to play with the dark humor. It’s so much fun 🙂

ParticipantMultiple versions of KQ4? Hah! Probably the most out of any Sierra game 😉
v 1.000.111 – 9 disks
v 1.006.003 – 8 disks
v 1.006.004 – 8 disks
v 2.0 – 6 disks (AGI)Haven’t payed attention to the differences, though.
Tom.

“… (by Florian Holzbauer) Hi dear friends,
hi Ken,two years ago I posted a question that video which could be found on that King’s Quest Collection with KQ I-VI on it. And there was this “The fun has just begun” video which did impress me pretty much. Is there any way to get a grab on it? I unfortunately lost the CD with the games and the video on it.
Best regards
Florian…”Hi, Florian
I have this video, as well as many others that came on the King’s Quest and Space Quest discs. I have placed them all on my FTP server for download. The username and password for this server is available on request, as I don’t want casual lurkers slamming my server…There’s about 250MB of stuff that I extracted from the CDs.
The AVI videos are in their original format. The video codec is Indeo 3.2 and the audio is PCM. In other words, these should play on just about anything. In the videos there are several interviews with Ken, Roberta, and the developers of both the KQ and SQ series. I have also extracted series information that contains information about each game and Q&As with the developers. Those are formatted as Windows .HLP files. In the KQ directory I have archived a program called the Developer’s Shield, which contains information about the creation and production of Sierra games, including preliminary sketches. Just extract and run Sierra.EXE. It works fine on my XP system. However, remember the images only display at 320×200. This was 10 years ago and 1600×1200 desktops weren’t exactly common. The videos are only 160×120 – In fact the bulk of the space they take up is actually the audio. However, these are interesting videos and I’m sure anyone here would like to see them.
Email me atsierra@schweiter.us to get the FTP username and password to download.

ParticipantI have seen some of the hand painted art on eBay, but not that often!

ParticipantI found a copy of the AGI version if anyone is interested, e-mail me and let me know. Also, am looking for the rare KQ4 cover. I could post it on here, but I think that would get Ken in trouble, am I right??

ParticipantHi!
I mentioned QEMM because some DOS based Sierra games (without the DOS Extender DOS/4GW) need alot of free memory. I almost always use the GM/MT32 emulation driver for the SB AWE32. When I play a game like Betrayal at Krondor I need a little more than 600Kb free memory. I only seem to get that many free mem with QEMM 😉
I also prefer WIN95 because of the fact that nowadays there are a lot of drivers/patches made by Sierra fans. These drivers/patches work better IMO (or only) with WIN95 or above.
You should probably experiment a little with several setups to see what works best for you. If you decide not to build a computer for (old) Sierra games then you should definately check out DOSBOX…
Grtz

ParticipantThanks for the feedback Ken.
There’s alot of us on Yserbius.org that would love to see it released… We’re slowly getting volanteers and information gathered to recreate it.
Thanks again,

ParticipantI am still struggling through the test program. I am working on a Javascript, HTML, DTML and CSS web based, Sierra style video game. I am currently working on the base game engine. I am
working with notepad. The attached zip file includes two web pages and the related images.
One is a funny spoof on Ken and Roberta’s new boat. The second one is an improved object mover
for the web game.I have been able to slow down the object motion for a walk sequence to the
cursor location. But, it only works once in the positive x direction. I will later swap out
images to imitate a walk.I would like to create a new Laura Bow game after the great writings of one of this sites member/guest “Laura Bow: Night of the Opera”. Anyone is welcome to use the code or improve on. After the enginee is created, I will work on the story board and then pictures. Unfortunately, in Paint.

Made it with using the regular EGA one as a template. Proves I have no life 🙂
QfG2 is my favourite – as you can tell with my tag and all…
I might make a Raseir map soon, if I can find the time 🙂
I also have it up in a super high-res format too. I planned on putting it on a mousepad at CafePress, just never really got around to it 🙂 http://www.legendsofglory.com/TBF/Shapeir Map.png”>High-Res Shapeir Map – 1.1MB

ParticipantYeah.. good pics!
It seems to me that the Sierra Telephone building was the old main office. I seem to recall having seen that building when I visited there around 1992-3. 🙂
and in case I haven’t mentioned it elsewhere.. The tour I got of Sierra all those years ago is still cherished in memory.. Aces over Europe, GK1 in development, etc. 😉
