Everyone pretty much said it, but I’ll confirm:

    1. Lori’s main “job” these days is running http://www.howtobeahero.com. If only we could find a way to make money from it! πŸ™‚
    2. I’ve spent the last few years developing the software behind http://www.jetsetpoker.com. If you’re over 18 and like to play poker, check it out.
    3. Both of us spend huge amounts of time playing World of Warcraft. It’s the first MMORPG that managed to hook us. We rarely play D&D these days because our gaming friends are too scattered.
    4. We’re in the SCA, but not very active. I do a little archery, a little folk guitar music, etc.
    5. We created Transolar Games as the shell of a company, but it never really got off the ground. We couldn’t agree on a project that everyone on the team wanted to make and that we could do on a small budget.
    6. Lori and I worked with Explorati for a little over a year. It had potential, but our two main clients dropped outside development after 9/11 took out their New York headquarters.

I am talking about the windows version of the game which I installed under Windows xp from the cdrom by setting resolution to 640*480 256 colors. The Config file in the windows game directory has the mouse driver setup as STDMOUSE.DRV and everything looks good but its still not showing me a cursor when the game starts πŸ™ I’ve tried renaming the driver putting it somewhere else using my own mouse drivers and pointing them to the right spot in the config file and it still doesn’t work. Ive also had no more luck with the dos version and vdmsound as I get a mouse with a cursor np but either music and no sound/speech or sound but no speech/music. Any help greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, Sierra has never released source code for any of their games. Some people have reverse-engineered some of the SCI games to effectively get the source, but Quest for Glory 5 was written in C++. The code is much more complex than that of an SCI game.

The original QG5 demo featured limited multiplayer play. If I recall correctly, you could see other players and talk to them, but not really interact otherwise. QG5 was designed to be both a solitaire and a multiplayer game, but we greatly underestimated the challenge of creating and testing an MMORPG. After QG5 was released, we looked at making a multiplayer version of it and concluded that we couldn’t get it done under any reasonable budget.

Lately Lori and I have been spending almost every non-working hour playing World of Warcraft. If we had created QG Online and it had come out half as well as WoW, we would have been very proud of our accomplishment. WoW has a lot of software bugs, but the game balance, quest, and guild mechanics are wonderful. (We play Horde characters on Silver Hand and Alliance on Earthen Ring, may eventually get back to playing our Night Elves on Shadow Council.)

Sierra did do Johnny Castaway. My memory is that it was Jeff Tunnel’s idea (at Dynamix, one of our subsidiarys).

It never gets the credit, but Johnny Castaway was HUGE for us. I bet at least a million copies were distributed over the years. We should have upgraded it and re-released it, but never did. Too bad — it was a very cool product.

As to Mystery House’s public domain status. My brother, John, did formally announce that the game was public domain — which is an ambiguous statement. Was he making the trademark public domain, or was he making the code public domain? I don’t know, and I doubt he knew at the time.

Doesn’t trademark law have a 17 year timeclock? Does anyone know? Or, is it 75 years? I don’t remember. If it is 17 years, Mystery House is public domain anyhow.

Realistically, this is a product that Sierra abandoned, long before most the people reading this post were born. I doubt they have retained any rights to the game — but, I’m not a lawyer, so I must say that I can’t answer your question.

If you put it in your %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32 directory, the game will never find it. Are you talking about the Windows version or the DOS version having the mouse problem? They use different config files. The Windows version uses WINRES.CFG while the DOS uses RESOURCE.CFG. Both should have the mouseDrv=STDMOUSE.DRV line.

Ok. I think I am going to unistall KQ6 again. Then re-install it. I installed it the 1st time with the instructions on the 1st page of these forums. I can’t find the file you are asking about. So I thought re-install and then go from there. Unless you have some step by step instuctions on installation for me. I am up for any help. Thanks a bunch!

Well, try copying stdmouse.drv to your C:/windows/system32 folder, or wherever the drivers are located.

Yes, of course you’re right, Ants πŸ™‚
As I was writing it I was wondering. Must’ve been the Enough Rope interview that confused me. πŸ™‚

Leah: Maybe you have the volume turned down? If you’re running DOS, have General MIDI selected and run VDM Sound, and if you’re running Windows, have Extended MIDI selected. That logically solves the problem. Maybe your volume for ‘SW Synth’ is too low πŸ™‚

umm yes i have tried Dosbox.. i cannot get the sound/music combo to work with VDM Sound. I am obviously running the game in 256 colors or it wouldn’t start.. and my resolution is 640 * 480. The game starts perfectly under Windows XP and the sound/music/video works the only thing that is a problem is NO MOUSE Cursor πŸ™ The drivers listed under my configuration files are STDMOUSE.DRV which is in my game directory.

Umm, yeah KQ6 still didn’t have music or sound. Just talking. <_< Someday I'll get a techie... in the flesh. Everyone keeps saying Russel Crowe is Australian… heh o_0

It’s a timer bug. Simply use a program like Turbo. Doesn’t matter if you’re using DOS or Windows, except with DOS you need to load Turbo prior to loading the game.

Set it to 30% (or lower if you need), and you will pass the firecracker scene with ease. Close Turbo after beating the sequence of course πŸ™‚

I don’t think he’s had an opportunity to ‘sell out’. And for the record, Russell Crowe isn’t Australian πŸ™‚
I certainly don’t like Nicole Kidman OR Tom Cruise’s acting, now or ever. I think they’re poor actors, doesn’t mean anything to me that they’re Australian. Well, maybe something πŸ˜‰

If you notice after you click Try Again, you have a bit of time before the dynamite explodes again. Take advantage of that time and walk a little before it blows up. Keep clicking Try Again and eventually, with baby steps, you’ll make it to the tomb.

Thanks for your help. I tried ignoring the tests and still got the same problem. I finally figured it out, though. It turns out that the game was conflicting with another program. It was trying to use memory that another program was using. As it was a Windows protection program, though, I couldn’t delete it. So I ended up trying it on yet ANOTHER computer and it’s finally working. Thanks anyway. πŸ™‚

Select ‘extended’. That’s General MIDI, which the Microsoft Synth is fully capable of producing. That should be fine. If you run VDM Sound it will run it fine.

Well, LOTR did highlight Australia/NZ’s talents πŸ™‚

SeaChange was special. I think it changed this country.

I don’t know that Australian actors ARE respected enough, even here. I think Wenham’s underrated, probably. But then again Australians generally watch US films, so unless he WAS in Hollywood they wouldn’t know πŸ™‚

I wish someone would destroy Hollywood and we could start again πŸ™‚ I am sick of movies like ‘Monster-In-Law’.

Well, seems like you’ve set something up incorrectly. Are you running Sierra.exe with VDM Sound? If so, open your resource.cfg file with Notepad, and copy/paste it here.

DOS doesn’t seem to work in XP, though I guess DOSBOX mgiht help.

If your mouse cursor isn’t present, make sure you have resolution at 256 colours, and that your resource.win file has a mouse driver setup.
