Sorry if I missed your reply. Thanks for the insight, I was just curious to see how involved you were. I thought that Konami actually didn’t a decent job based on the hardware they had to work with.

Ken, you’re right about the medium. If CD based video game systems would have taken off 5 years earlier I bet Sierra would have licensed a lot more games.

Maybe you need to complete more tasks. Did you talk to Jollo in the bookshop at all?

Can someone give me a similar guide to setting KQ6 up in DOS with VDMSound? Because from what I’ve tried on my own, the sound is a bit laggy and the fade in and out of the Sierra logo and the KQ6 logo at the beginning are agonizingly slow.

Yeah, play the DOS CD version and use VDM Sound 🙂

DJ, I thought the EXACT same thing about Galaxy Quest. I mean even right down to the “Quest” in the title. The movie really had the same feel as a Space Quest game… much more so than “Starship Troopers” (more of a political commentary, based on the novel), which someone else mentioned earlier.

Well, after I found the time to watch the videos altogether I wonder who these people are (especially those in tech.avi; well besides Ken himself saying “You don’t innovate without making mistakes” – which reminds me of “Fahrenheit” / “Indigo Prophecy”). They talk pretty interesting stuff.

Are those people still working somewhere within Vivendi? Or did they open other studios?
    Maybe someone knows more.

I renamed the file, and used OCR to recognize (most of) the text instead of seeing it as just a bunch of pictures.

    Enjoy. 🙂

EDIT: I tried uploading it, and tried uploading it by editing afterwards, and I get this timeout error even though the file is being constantly uploaded the entire time. The script just gets tired of waiting, it seems. :/

I’ve got KQ6 running nearly-perfectly (the colors get all garbled for a bit at seemingly random times o.O), but one thing really bugs me (I’m using Windows XP SP2). The cursor’s graphic doesn’t update/refresh unless you move it outside of the window and back again. For example, if the walk icon is currently selected and displayed in the window, right-clicking will cycle it to the next action (hand, I think?), but it will still look like the walk icon, even though it will function correctly as the hand icon. Basically, the game doesn’t “redraw” the cursor to reflect changes that the player makes. This adds a lot of frustration to the game as I have to constantly move the mouse in and out of the window just to be sure of what I’m doing (it’s especially annoying, when you’re trying to use inventory items).

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, any ideas on how to fix it?

I’ve also always felt that a Sierra Movie would’ve been great. Growing up with these games, I’ve seen MANY movies that I felt touched on the Sierra Universe, and couldn’t help but feel that some of these movies were inspired by some of Sierra’s older games.

    For Example:

“Shrek” always makes me think about the King’s Quest Universe.

“Galaxy Quest”, anyone? I GUARANTEE that SOMEONE behind that movie had played Space Quest. I mean, COME ON!

“40 Year Old Virgin” is my current favorite for Leisure Suit Larry, but really ANY down on his luck, loser-ish character wanting to “get some”, reminds me of Larry and his plights.

    Many other parallels, as well.

Cool, I did a little searching and found more info. It is going to be interesting to see how these sets are packaged.

Brandon, do you have copies of all of these .avi files for the archive project? I have some files that I took from some of the old games I had. One is with Ken and Roberta talking about the growth of their business. Another one about Roberta talking about her game ideas and themes sitting by a large dog. I have the KQVI, KQVII introductions. If I remember correctly there are two phatasmagora .avi files out there. There is also a making of KQVIII .avi out their where one programmer holds up a scull with eyes and one of the eyes falls out. I don’t know if you could link to them on this site.

ooOohh. It worked! I remember seeing that video long ago. I think it was a promo thing that was included in other Sierra games that were out at that time. Aww, it brings back memories!

You may need the divx codec. http://divx.com, and download the free player/codec.

    Ken,

I have heard that some 3rd party company was contracted to make the old game compatale with the newer systems.

I’m curious to see what they release. The old games can be difficult to get to run on modern machines, and I doubt they are fixing up the products.

I really think they’ve missed some great opportunities. There isn’t much family-oriented product in the market. I would think that rather than releasing a lot of the old games at once, more money might be found by focusing on something like a Kings Quest 7/Torins Passage bundle at Christmas. The later games are “more compatible” with today’s hardware.

Overall, I’m just happy to see that the games aren’t completely forgotten.

Well, I suppose the obvious question is, “Do you have the movie file?”

Alternatively, is the game setup on your hard disk? Post your resource.cfg contents here, please. (Open with notepad.)

Well, I did say Google it, so regardless if you knew what it was or not you could’ve done so 🙂

Anyways, those guys/gals are right, it’s a simple slowdown utility which you can load and set to, say, 30% and then try to pass the sequence.
