Wow, that site has a lot of good stuff on it. I’ve never seen that demo. Maybe someone out there has it!

    Brandon,

I hope your message doesn’t mean that the calendars will disappear completely.  I looked at it, and I want one to go with all my other Sierra stuff.  I just can’t get it right now – maybe in February.  Please tell me they’ll still be available then.

Jane Jensen didn’t exactly come up with the story… GK3 is heavily based on the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, which was first published in the early 80s.

I doubt it. However I feel this is kinda unfair, since GK3 is a lot older than Brown’s novel and most people suddenly thought they were reading a completely original story. In fact I often feel annoyed when I listen to people talking about how marvelous The Da Vince Code was, since I think Jensen’s story was a lot more interesting. Probably it’s just a matter of opinion. I’m also sad, since I think Vivendi should have used this moment of sudden interest to resell Gabriel Knight 3. I believe it is a winning card. Most probably  lot of people would have played it, and perhaps they would be interested in producing a Gabriel Knight 4.

ps. ‘Coming soon by Vivendi: Gabriel Knight 4: The Vampire Slayer,  available for  your  XBOX360, compatible with USB laser guns.’… please NOOOooo …. just joking šŸ˜‰

I don’t know anything about rights and patents but from a tech point of view it would actually be fairly easy to reacreate TSN. If we went with a good developement environment (like Microsoft .NET), it would be quick and painless with the right team and resources. Although TSN was revolutionary and advanced for the time, it is all very ‘old hat’ now, so none of the programming would turn out to be a major hurdle. I would be up for helping with such a project (as a programmer) but getting the rest of the team together would be a problem. As all of us here know, volunteer projects are hard to maintain. We have had that problem before. I for one loved TSN, and would be honored to help recreate it.

By the way, didn’t some other group already start redoing TSN? I can’t remember the name or website though.

Well, no one picked up a calendar, but that’s alright… it was a bit late to be selling a calendar for the new year. Alistair sent in some questions on email though, so I figured I’d answer them here in case anyone else was wondering the same thing.

can you send me a PayPal invoice for a KQ6 sketch calendar

I believe that Lulu will give you a printable receipt online as well as including a printed receipt with your calendar. PayPal should also provide you with an online receipt once you purchase the item. I can’t send you a PayPal invoice to purchase a calendar – you must buy it through Lulu’s system by visiting the link in my original post.

can you ship it to Australia

Lulu will ship international, and the shipping cost and delivery options are set by them.

and is it fully coloured inside, or black/white sketches?

The inside is all black and white sketches.

And a fourth. Are you selling any other cool items like this??

We have stuff planned… it takes time and a lot of work to make it happen, but trust me, it is coming. We’ll make sure everyone knows about it when we launch the big stuff.

    How you doing, incidentally?

    Busy! Always very busy!

I blame Vinvendi for one major thing.  They have held onto the liscense of all of the old Sierra games, they have done nothing to further the games, and they have attacked anyone who tries to continue the games without their blessing.  If you are a fan of the wonderful Sierra games this alone should be enough.  I don’t want a shoot-em-up Swat game.  A gore galore Fear game.  I want a story of adventure where everywhere I go there is something different to see and experience.

Come on guys I am a fan of Old Sierra games as well, but blaming Vivendi for the fact that some of those types of games are no longer comercially viable is just wrong. I know there is a often a need to find a scapegoat, but the fact is Vivendi/Sierra put out some awesome games this year. FEAR – SWAT4 – Empire Earth 2 – all for the PC and all up for numerous GOTY nominations.

And I don’t know what your talking about, but the Sierra.com website looks fully updated to me. Time to update your browser.

    Hi everybody,
Please help!! I was just replaying the floppy version of King’s Quest 5 and everything ran fine… until I got to the end. After I kill Mordack with the rain spell and Graham tries to figure out how to rescue his family, Cassima appears and they have a little conversation. The game hangs up right when she is saying ‘after all you have gone through, there has to be some way…’ or something like that (how appropriate!). I think Crispin is supposed to appear at this point, but the dialogue window does not dissapear and the game stays like that forever. I can tell however that the game is not completely frozen because the cursor still moves and the animation of the burning embers keeps running. I am playing under Windows XP and have tried running the game through DOSBOX and VDMSound with the same results. If somebody knows how to fix this bug or a workaround to the problem your help would be greatly appreciated. I can’t believe I played through the whole game only to get stuck just before the ending sequence!!! Damn…

Hi again… I’m updating this post. I’ve been doing some research about this bug and I found that maybe it’s not a real bug in the game it’s just that this is a corrupt version that got widespread on the web, cause I downloaded the game from2 different sites and I got the same thing, so please if someone has downloaded the game and succesfully completed it without any problems (on windows xp) I would appreciate very much that you post the url of the site where you got the game. Remember that I’m interested in the text only version of KQ5, cause I can’t stand the voice acting in the talkie version…

I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying it!  šŸ™‚

The place where you’re stuck is an (intentionally) cliched puzzle that
has been used in a lot of adventure games.  I think Phantasmagoria
did it first.  Look inside the keyhole (it’s a little hard to
find, so keep an eye on the bottom of your screen to see the word
‘keyhole’ when your cursor is positioned in the right place).
There is something inside the keyhole that you have to get out.

I downloaded the Christmas Quest.  It took about 22min on Juno’s free dial-up at 5.4 KB/sec.  The math probably doesn’t add up but thats what the Microsoft dialog said.

The game was fairly good.  I was able to get the tree standing and opened the Greatest Adventure Game present.  I even got the card stuck under the door.  But, thats where I got stuck in the game.  Did Christmas Quest come with a hint book. : )  The writing for the Dork was very good.  I do see why Sierra used smaller characters.  It feels a little closed-in in that small room.

    Keep up the great work.

I just happened to pull some old games down off my shelves (Older TRUE Sierra games are like that, always coming back to them) and I guess I kind of started to remember the times, the hours, the days and week spent trying to complete just one more game!!! And then Sierra popped back into my mind and I decided to take a look at the current state of things at sierra.com

All I can say is ā€œWHAT IS GOING ON?ā€

The Sierra site (Vivendi Universal) is almost always ½ completed. Portions of things missing, other sections taken down, or half taken down. Some sections you can get to, only to see pictures gone with little ā€œxā€ in their places. Even the main screen is missing graphics and looks like someones Web Design Project for School. I also noticed that the whole Hoyle Franchise is now with Encore Entertainment. What happened there??? Is this slowly turning into the final resting place of Sierra? By the current state of thing, it could possibly be…

I’m just disgusted to see what Vivendi has done to everything that Sierra was. It’s a hollow shell of what Sierra On-Line was a one time. Almost a joke, or a nightmare depending on how much you looked up to the place when Ken was minding the store.

It’s a sad shame that they took a name that WAS gaming, and turned it into something horrible to look at. The only thing the is recognizable is the name. Nothing else.

I just feel that a long time ago, the company lost its heart when Ken stepped down. It’s been on life support all this time, but now it just seems like the old life support machine is starting to break down, and there is no one left to fix it.

I think the great old games will live on in our memory and hearts, but will never see the light of day after our generation has passed. The generation that knew what gaming was. Not by today’s standards. So few companies bring anything new or original to the table, something worth the time or money. They all look like repacks of the game before it. Sure the textures have changed, and the names of the characters have changed, but deep down, they are all the same game anymore. Nothing original. That was something you could always rely on with Sierra. Great original games that you wanted to pull your hair out waiting for the next installment.

Oh well. That was my walk down memory lane I guess. It’s just sad to see how things came to be. There used to be a time when I would walk into my local Gaming shop just trying to sniff out the latest Titles, (Sierra games always on my mind) but now I find myself not even stopping in at all anymore. Oh sure, I guess if I want the latest game that looks like the game before it, and the one before that, I guess there is still something to find.

But look harder. There on the bottom shelf. There is a game box or two there. Covered in dust and hardly ever moved or looked at anymore. The last price tag fell off years ago, and I doubt anyone will even remember what it sold for. But pick it up, dust off the Sierra On-Line Logo, and grab your wallet. Buy that game, and prepare yourself for a breath of fresh air!!!

    Take Care…

I’m taking a break from developing this game, but I posted an unreleased screenshot at: http://benjaminlindelof.tripod.com/index.html  (scroll to the bottom of the page)

The credits will never change from the original game.  My efforts will go uncredited in the final game, but I thought you guys would like to see the direction I’m taking it.

It’s fun… that’s why I’m doing it!  BTW: If you want to play the original Colonel’s Bequest with a minimum of hassle, here’s a quick fix for you:

Search Google for STEEM.  It’s an Atari ST emulator.  Then run the ColonelsBequest.ST image of the game!  The Atari ST image of the game is around the web and on file-sharing services.  It’s much easier than trying to get the DOS version working under Windows XP.

This game was a group effort that took about 6 weeks to put together
from start to finish.  I’d recommend anyone who wants to make a
game NOT try to do it in such a short timeframe. šŸ™‚  As I
mentioned before, we are going to try to release an updated version
with some fixes and tweaks within the next few weeks.

The person who did the programming was already familiar with AGS.
I don’t know how much of a learning curve there would be for someone
    who hasn’t used it before.

If you want to learn more about AGS, you can visit the official website: http://www.bigbluecup.com/

Thanks for the feedback.  šŸ™‚  We had to cut some corners to
get the game done in time for Christmas, but now that we have, there is
time to iron out some of the bugs and (hopefully) get an update put
    together.

Sorry you didn’t play very far, though, because in my completely biased opinion, the writing is the best part.  *grin*

I think the bird cage is just there to make the robbery more interesting.  I think robbing houses was the best thing in the Quest for Glory games, especially in the early games.  One thing I’ve always wondered, is it possible to steal Otto’s yo-yo?  I remember someone in the game alludes to the fact that it’s valuable.  I also always tried breaking into and robbing the keep with no luck.

I liked QFG5.  It’s not as good as the others, but it was still good.  The only complaints I’d have are that it’s the last one and I didn’t want the series to end, I didn’t like the giant overhead map style of exploration (I didn’t like it in QFG3 either), and the fighting was seriously flawed.  I wish they kept and expanded upon the original style of fighting (pre-QFG4).

As for KQ8 and GK3, I liked GK3’s story and that’s really what I played it for.  Well, I liked it up until the end when it turned into Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  I only played KQ8 for about an hour and then got sick of it.  I thought the graphics were horrible and the gameplay was boring.  The draw distance really bothered me.  It’s hard to be immersed in a world when it’s nothing but fog in nearly every direction.  Or maybe the graphics just don’t translate correctly on new video cards.  I tried using a glide wrapper and I don’t know how to play it in DirectX.  Out of those series finales, QFG5 was definitely the best.

My cousin had the original Hero’s Quest.  I also played it on a laptop (could’ve been a Tandy too).  It was huge.  It’s funny when I remember how big and heavy it was and how tiny the monitor actually was.  I connected it to my Commodore 64 monitor so I could play it in B&W rather than blue and gray.  I still loved the game.  It’s probably one of my favorite games of all time.  I think it’s the best overall, even though QFG4 has the best story.  And there is no dragon in it and it’s a saurus rex on the cover, not a dragon.  You can tell it has tiny arms and no wings.

I played QFG5 on a Mac.  I think it ran good.  Just get the latest patches.  80 Mhz might be too slow, though.  The only problem I remember having was trying to load save games I made on the PC on the Mac.
