Someone has already for KQ5, SQ1, and SQ4
    http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/sqscreens.html
    http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/kq5screens.html

And also several examples of changes from demos to released etc.
    http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/

I wish they had contact info on their page, they seem to have lots of variations of the games.

I’ve only seen a few of these in action.  It would be great if someone could provide a link to a site with comparative screenshots.

They had it listed as untested, so I took a chance.

I contacted them and they are trying to get ahold of who they got the game from to see if they made backups.

I’ve not had very good luck lately with the ega games, but many are now over 15 years old, and probably don’t hold up well to the stress of shipping.

What’s wierd is it’s consistenly only one disk, the Larry 5 EGA, the first disk, Police Quest 3 ega, the last disk (managed to recover it though using ‘bad copy’), in this case (space quest 1 remake, ega) the third disk.  Hmmm. first, middle, last, hopefully I’m done now.

Though my Space Quest 4 ega, and King’s Quest 5 ega did work ok, and I’ve imaged those.
I’m waiting on they copy of Larry 1 remake ega that I won on ebay, hope I have better luck with that.

Now, I’m just keeping an eye out on ebay to see what pops up.

Just out of interest, did the auctioneer inform you beforehand that the disk was faulty?

You don’t happen to still have that game do you?  I’m trying to put together a collection of the EGA versions of the games that were release in seperate EGA and VGA versions.

Just got the Space Quest 1 – remake from ebay.  Sigh… disk 3 is dead, all the others are fine, my recovery tool can’t even get the files off the dead disk.

Anyone have this version that can send me a disk image of the 3rd disk?

Hi Tom! These demos are rare finds indeed! Thanks for uploading them!

I hope that Sierra Gamers will soon add an extra section on the website just for demos, music, movies, patches and other downloads. A lot of these treasures seem to get lost in the threads or are hard to find.

Yea, I know what you mean about the low res.

I found the fingerprints on the internet, and you should have seen them before I made my rendition.

I’ll probably keep looking for something better and eventually make another, but for now I’m stuck with this one.

Thanks, I had missed those, I based my list on the games I have that have the ‘ega sold seperately’ sticker on them.

I’ve been pulling together what I can off the net, plus my own collection (I have a fair number), and what I can find off ebay.

I’ve been noticing that the disks are starting to go (especially ebay purchases, probably the temperature extremes of shipping), so hope to archive as many as I can before it’s too late.

Will send you an email tonight, off to work now.
    Steve.

For making master disk backups, we are still waiting on that disk imaging utility that was being written by one of our members here, although I know a number of us here have been archiving our own disk sets with whatever method each of us has individually chosen. One thing I’ve paid particular attention to is to make sure to archive only disks that have, as far as I can tell, not been modified since they were originally packaged, with new configuration files, saved games, etc. Eventually, we will have a separate website setup with a custom system to handle all the archival activities we’ve been engaged in.

I’m pleased to say I still have a magnifying glass that is in near mint condition. You could place a piece of red cellophane – the magnifying glass if you have it – over the fingerprint on the chart and then scan it – i.e., scan them both together. That method worked very well for me, and in the end gave me high resolution, archival quality images.

Meanwhile, I’m sure others will enjoy your very cool picture. Unfortunately, the resolution is very low, which makes it difficult to print a sharp copy and clearly study those fingerprints.

I’m not sure if you forgot them or that you just aren’t looking for
them, but there are some more EGA games: Hoyle’s Book of Games 3 &
Mixed-up Fairy Tales. And of course, Conquest of the Longbow, mentioned
    already by collector.

Of the EGA versions, I’m missing CotL, Dr. Brain, EcoQuest, Willy Beamish & Mixed-up Fairy Tales.

If you’re interested, contact me. I’ve got a whole bunch of versions of
games since I made this Sierra version list once. Although you seem to
have quite the collection yourself (not many people have EGA versions,
    KQ3 CoCo, etc.)

Are you interested in a trade, sell, or if you can’t part with them, possibly a copy of the files?

For trade, I have a few extra copies of some games, though the only quasi rare one I have is King’s quest III for the CoCo (still looking for Larry 1 for the Coco), or I can tade back files in response if you want any of the EGA versions I have (I only have one physical copy of each though)

I’m putting together a collectors site in my spare time (which isn’t much I’m afraid), concentrating on the catalogs, ads, movies, in general, and downloads of the harder to find versions of sierra games (like the ega versions I’ve listed, Kings quest 4 AGI etc, Space Quest 1 AGI with the ‘ken’ easter egg).

Hi Juliana- Have you had any luck getting mgdx to run. I am at the same level but during the past week I have progressed into the game twice. Unfortunately I haven,t been able to recreate this. Interesting though I can go to saved games (from old Windows ME days) without any problem. Maybe this may trigger some thought in some of others. PS Itoo have tried gosierra, dosbox and vdms without success

Several of Sierra’s early VGA games were released in two seperate versions, one VGA and a seperate 16 colour EGA version.
I’ve been trying to track these games down.  So far I’ve picked up:

    King’s Quest 5 EGA
    Police Quest 3 EGA
    Space Quest 4 EGA
Space Quest 1 – Remake EGA
    Larry 1 – Remake EGA
    Larry 5 EGA

The disk one of my Larry 5 ega doesn’t work, I’m hoping someone else has a copy of this that can send me the files, also the last disk of Police Quest 3 EGA was buggy, but I think I got the file off.

    I’m still looking for:
    Dr. Brain EGA
    Eco Quest EGA
    Willy Beamish EGA
    Heart of China EGA
    Rise of the Dragon EGA

I’ve downloaded The Beast Within demo and decided to post the download information here because this is the demo section Smiley  I got the download link from ATMachine who is an regular poster on adventuregamers.com. The demo was uploaded to the website of Hendroz who is responsible for the amazing Gabriel Knight patches. Check out his website for more information: http://www.gabrielknight2k.tk

Sorry about this shameless plug but Hendroz did some amazing stuff Smiley

I haven’t tried the demo yet because I’m at work…

The Beast Within demo contains the original artwork which unfortunately did not make it in the final version. If the demo crashes in XP be sure to use the supplied 300.aud file. This file will hoever disable the music…

    The download links:

    Demo: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/gkpatches/demos/gk2demo.zip
    Aud file: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/gkpatches/demos/300.AUD

    Enjoy!

I played outpost 1 when it first came out.  Thought it was a lot
of fun and hooked me on the building sims that sierra made.  I
loved all the city builders and am now following the old impressions
crew with the Tilted Mill group.  They made children of the nile
and are hard at work making Ceasar IV for release later this
    year.

I tried my best to locate the Beast Within demo but haven’t been succesful so far… The only demo I’m able to download is the demo for the shooter Vivisector: Beast Inside.

Anybody any idea where to look? I’ll try contacting the owner of the webpage.

Well, scapegoat or not, anyone who was around at the time of the Sierra / Vivendi change over will tell you how it went down. Friends that were supposed to be friend played the stabbing game. And from what I understand, without regret. (Even worse). People who were to remain with the company were handed pink slips. So many talented people were shown the door. All you had to do was hang out in the right places to hear the stories from the people themselves. I could understand the ā€œHe said, she saidā€ theory, but when your in chat room, or ā€œTalkSpotā€ and you heard and read things from those who were involved, you kind of felt the horror that went down when they ended up dealing with a snake pit.. The whole deal stunk of sour grapes but one would think I’m doing this to find a scapegoat? Really. I know I should not say such things, but call a spade a spade. They barely did anything that they promised they were going to do. Simple as that. And for that… I can’t think of any other words then ā€œThey suck!ā€ They (Vivendi) told people what they wanted to hear when they wanted to hear it and once the deal was signed, they closed the door and locked it. I heard mention by one individual that if they knew what was going to happen and how it was going to happen, they would have stopped the whole deal. It’s on those thoughts alone they killed what Sierra was.

I’ll give you one. Empire Earth and Empire Earth 2. They were good games. The rest of them? Like everyone else. No ā€œmeatā€ to the games at all. Like I said before, sure the names were changed, and the textures were changed over, and even a new story line, but deep down in the core, they were like all the rest. Kill’em and Grill’em. Lets shock them with a blood bath. Now I’m in no way a prude saying those games are sheer crap on content alone, because I played a round or two of games like that, but based on the content that was Sierra, they are just plain crap.

I’m sure by today’s standards, Sierra was the Atari 2600 of its day. But damn those were great days. And I would be willing to pull out my old Atari 2006 just to play them again. As for the current games? If I play them at all, they will hold very little shelve life. If I ever try to look back and remember what neat thing I seen in one of the games I’ll be searching forever because they will all be the same. But if I wanted to check out something about ā€œPulsating Pectoralsā€ I’ll know exactly where I need to go to see it again. 20, 30 years from now, I’ll remember that. 20 30 years from now, I’ll hardly remember a cool looking monster in Doom. They were cool at the time, but easily replaced by the next one to come along.

There is no way you can compare the old games to today’s games. It’s just an empty thought. Back then you had structure and content that kept the mind moving along. Sometimes painstakingly. Today, as long as your hand-eye coordination is good you’re bound to stumble your way through the game somehow. When I was younger, I remember it taking weeks if not months to finish a game because you had to think and use your brain just as much as hand eye coordination. It made buying the game just as important as playing it. You knew for the $30.00 you would be busy for a month or two. Today you’re lucky if it takes you a few days. (Well for me anyway) Hardly worth the investment. But I’ll give you this, once in a great while, there comes a game that boarders on the old and the new, and it’s something I simply can’t ignore, and I dive in like the rest of them, but the majority are nothing more then repackaged crap.

I have been buying Sierra Games back when Kings Quest was first brought out. Yea, the old EGA one with PC Speaker Sound. When Leisure Suit Larry 1 came out for the Tandy Color Computer 3. Back at a time when they were pioneers when they included Tandy 3 Voice Sound and finally started to build compatibility for a new sound card called the Game Blaster (From a little known company back then, called Creative Labs)

I have run the evolution of the adventure game with Sierra. I guess that’s why I understand them so well. I guess that’s why I miss them so much. And that’s why when I look at the Sierra of today, I’m disgusted and appalled that they even use the Sierra name for the crap they put out anymore.

They will never ā€œBeā€ Sierra. Just like when I put on a mask at Halloween, I’ll never be ā€œJasonā€ All I’ll be is some ordinary Joe behind a mask of something better known. Something I’ll never be able to be. They keep the Sierra name for one thing and one thing only, so someone somewhere will remember the name and buy a game based on what they remember from the Sierra name.

    Cheers!

I have always been of the opinion that Futurama (and Galaxy Quest) would not exist had it not been for Space Quest.  Regardless of the serious sci-fi influences like Star Trek, etc. it’s clear that the show has set out from the start to copy the feel of Space Quest, i.e. the way it parodies serious sci-fi.  The art direction is also very similar to that of the later SQ games, especially SQ6.
