ParticipantNope, they’re not being released yet. VU probably projected that bumped
date last year, so I assume that online retailers will get another
projected bumped date in the next couple weeks.PS Ken, I don’t
know why there’s carriage returns being inserted into this message?
Most noticeably after the first time I use the word ‘bumped’, I never
originally typed in the carriage returns and even when I edit it and
then remove them, they still stay. Plus there’s a double CR between
these two paragraphs but the editor shows only one.Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantMy Lord I hope its true this time…..I wanna buy some new King’s Quest stuff!! If they work great in XP I’ll be in heaven. And I might even forgive Vivendi enough to stop sending death treats to their management weekly! (Kidding)
It was also very nice to see that great KQ9 article in Computer Gaming World this month!!! Very emotional for me reading that article, even moreso considering CGW gave so many of the old Sierra classics ‘Game of the Year’.
Very good times!

ParticipantI don’t know if it helps any, but my SLASH copy, in the purple 1-piece box, comes only in a CD envelope, and the CD does have the separate GITT audio track.

ParticipantYa, that’s the one I’ve been working on (based on specific refrences from official material), glad to see people are reading it.
Infact that’s the reason I was asking, since I would have liked to put something for MOE other than just Date Unknown, it doesn’t make for compelling topic you know?
I was hoping Ken could get an answer from Roberta on the issue, that is if she could remember any details, as that is so long ago.
However, I was able to get an answer from Mark Seibert, the other producer for the game, and he said;
I’m sure we had this conversation. Since Graham is still around, it can’t be too long of a period of time, but I don’t think we ever gave it an exact time frame – I think we merely discussed it in terms of “Graham is now old.”-Mark Seibert, March 11, 2006.
While its not specific, it at least seems to imply it graham may be in his late 60-70s or older. But still not specific enough that I could feel safe about creating a topic on the issue, even using circa notation.

ParticipantHmmm… How come I don’t have the audio track? my copy seems legitimate enough… Was there a release without the track? (it’s possible since there was a release without the manual)
Max, are you sure you have the song in a seperate track? The fact that the song plays during the credits doesn’t mean that it plays from an audio track, because the song can also be found in the file RESOURCE.SFX.
Can you please check?Thanks

ParticipantWhat about this?
http://www.sq7.org/KQ/index.php/Official_King’s_Quest_Timeline
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantIts not the chest of gold, as the chest of gold is filled with gold coins. The Pirate chest is filled with gems, pearls and other treasures according to the description for it if you look at it.
‘KQ’s usually have a reason for every item unlike some other series like LSL and SQ.’
Actually the earliest King’s Quests were loaded with ‘Treasure Hunting’, that wasn’t directly related to the story itself.
KQ1, had the golden walnut, the golden egg, etc for its ‘treasure hunt’. While they could be used for alternative way to get past certain puzzles, they were not specific main way to get past the puzzles, and you would lose points for using them. So collecting them was mainly to get perfect ‘score’.
KQ2, had the Sapphire Jewels to collect for its ‘treasure hunt’. They weren’t needed to beat the game, but collecting them gave a perfect score and its assumed they were given to Valanice on her wedding day.
The treasure chest was KQ3’s version of the ‘treasure hunt’ from the previous two games, and it existed in order to get a ‘perfect score’.
‘Magic Map’
There is no magic map in KQ5.

ParticipantMask of Eternity isn’t gory at all. There is some blood but its never gratuitous.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantYes I’m quite aware of that timeline. However its unofficial and contains much material invented by Phoenix Online studios for the backstory for their game. Its cool, but it doesn’t always match up with backstories given in manuals, and official hintguides. The date for when MOE takes place in their timeline is their invention as far as I know, and isn’t derived from any official source.
That is the reason why I’m asking if there was ever any official refrences to how long after KQ7 that MOE takes place, or if anyone on the MOE team had any idea in mind in their production notes. I only have access to MOE Hintguide, manual, the game, and a few online interviews, and they really don’t mention anything for when MOE takes place.

ParticipantIt’s indeed used in games when the debug mode is active. You’d get a
dialog screen containing ‘Memory fragmented.’ and the options ‘Yes, No,
Who Cares’. Some games shipped with a working debug mode will show it,
although I can’t give you the exact titles right now, but I believe the
Police Quest remake was among them.Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantIn earlier King’s Quest games there was always some kind of idea how long each new game took place after the previous game. Usually the refrences were made within the manuals or official Hint guides, and ocassionally a date would be refrenced within the games themselves(Rosella is almost 20 in KQ7).
However I’ve searched through all that I have on Mask of Eternity, and can’t find one refrence to how much time passed between the end of KQ7, and to when MOE takes place. Only thing I notice is that Graham looks quite a bit older than in previous games, though that might not mean much.
Ken, did Roberta ever have a specific idea for how much time passed between the end of KQ7 and when MOE takes place?
Does anyone else have any obscure refrences I may have missed from some interview, or other official documentation that refrences the game?

ParticipantI just googled the game and saw the box cover for Mr. Cool. I have played Q’bert on the arcades. I honestly did not like it much. I would always fall of the sides of the pyramid. If I know Sierra Mr. Cool was probably funner to play than Q’bert. At that time arcade games were the big thing. The buz was for games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Astroids, Centipede almost in that order. PC games were only for those who could afford a PC at the time. My first computer was an 8088 with a Hercules monicrom graphics card. I started with games like Test Drive. When I got my $500 VGA monitor at the time I started with King’s Quest II. If your please, describe the game play more!
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantIndeed, it was a game where an ice cube called Mr. Cool jumped from hot plate to hot plate in an attempt to change their colors to a pattern. It was based on the game Q*Bert…

ParticipantI recently evaluated GameTap and wrote an article about it, from an
adventure gamer’s perspective. If you’d like to read it, the
article is here: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,608/I wouldn’t be surprised if they add SQ4 (and 6) at some point.
The ones that are up there right now weren’t added in order, and the
games are added randomly, so it’s very possible the whole series will
be up there at some point. GameTap also has several PDF manuals
stored on their site (this has changed since the article was printed),
some of which are for King’s Quest. So it wouldn’t surprise me if
the KQ games get added to the service. Someone reported on the
Adventure Gamers forum yesterday that he saw a ‘coming soon’ ad for
Quest for Glory II, also.-emily

ParticipantThis was with the Ice Cube and the Hot Springs. Was the object of the game to cool of as many plates as you can?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantIn the KQV code there is the words ‘Yes.No.Who cares’ in 0.SCR. Was this ever seen in the game? Was the programmer upset about something? Was this part of a debuging program?

ParticipantWindows xp is very sensitive about old software. I was able to play Phantasmagoria on an old computer I have arround that has Windows 2000 installed on it. It crashed a couple of times, but it was OK,

ParticipantI came across this game today, I’d guess the creator played a sierra game or two sometime in his life:
http://www.otterarchives.com/bountygame.html
A Case of the CrabsIt has a point and click interface and an inventory system that reminds me a little bit of some of the remakes (like QFG1).

ParticipantThat’s what my CD and manual looks like exactly, but mine does have Girl in the Tower on it. Thanks for replying people.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantThat OEM copy you talk about is very interesting… I think that’s what I have too, although I didn’t even get a jewel case! Well, the manual is too big to fit in a jewel case anyway.
However, the lack of jewel case is not what worries me about my copy – what does worry me is that the CD lacks the infamous audio track of Girl in the Tower.
Max, can you please check if your OEM copy misses the track as well? Just put the CD in a regular stereo and see if there are one or two tracks.
By the way, just to make sure we have the same release, I scanned the manual and CD. See it here.Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantHmm, the item seems to be gone.
I don’t much about the Apple releases, but this occured for sure on PC
releases. The Space Quest 1 VGA remake is the example I know of from
personal experience, which was available in the old EGA box. I’m sure
there are others as well. I guess it’s as simple as using up the old
boxes that were already printed. Maybe Ken has some memories on this.Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantThanks, Ken. It’s always nice when unexplained hiccups are explained, rather than being mysterious and… unexplained! 🙂

ParticipantThe extra emails were my fault. We moved the servers to a new hosting facility, and all email was lost temporarily. I resent everything from the last two days, rather than trying to sort out what had, and hadn’t, been sent.

ParticipantSame thing happened here. I thought everyone was going post happy.
That’s a good idea about having the title in the subject line, Brandon.
