ParticipantYou can always play a lot of the early AppleII games online here…
Make sure you’re using IE… It doesn’t work with FireFox.

ParticipantIt is a problem with modern graphics cards and the old AGI games. Try a new third party interpreter such as Sarien.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantHmmm. Sounds like one of the files didn’t get copied or is corrupted. “WORDS.TOK” maybe?

ParticipantWow, Ken, the construction is comming along very nicely. You and Roberta must be aching to go on your next trip!

ParticipantmxCoder: in the RWA clip (Roberta.avi, “Are we filming”) indeed some shots from Phantasmagoria are shown, but it isn’t the same clip as in the url that fender_17@alltel.net mentioned below.

ParticipantThanks for the update link. For the video, try http://www.photobucket.com . It’s free. 🙂

ParticipantI’m still in Taiwan, but will work on uploading videos as soon as I get home (to see what I’m up to here, check out: http://www.nordhavn68.com)
Does anyone know of somewhere I can upload video cheaply (or, best of all for free)? I’m worried that if I upload the uncompressed versions of the videos all of you will clobber my bandwidth downloading them.

ParticipantSorry, if I get this wrong but with the internet restrictions I cannot view the clips. I have a clip from Roberta Williams Anthology that has Roberta talking about Phantamagoria. I think it starts out with ‘Are we filming? Hi, my name is Roberta Williams’ She talks about how she is a horror fan and that alot of the times the character in the games are female. Is this the one your looking for.

ParticipantI see, you are right! Thanks for the link. Pity that it is again such low quality. I checked the site and I understand this is a Real Video conversion of the Sierra deluxe 30 MB (!) version of the Making of Phantasmagoria. Does somebody knows the source of this video (was it included on a Sierra CD?), or what “Sierra deluxe” means?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantYou’re absolutely right, I phrased that terribly.
I guess I maybe misread what the guy was saying, but it did seem to me he was at least slightly making criticisms of such things.
I don’t think the topic’s futile, but it subtly felt like some kind of conservative dichotomy, to me anyway. Basically, not saying things like ‘being gay is bad’ but saying more measured things instead like ‘this is shocking’ and so forth. I think a lot of people do that online, though.
But yeah, I was way off overall. My bad.

ParticipantOh Ok thanks for the Response Ken. and that would be great thanks Ken. and the one posted isnt the one I mean. The one I mean shows Roberta explaining how she came up with the story for the game.
heres the link

ParticipantI wouldn’t think people at Vivendi would want to confirm it 😉
Logic says to me that Vivendi just has no expertise or knowledge of the games. How else can you explain the unpopular DOSBox release. Though, it’s selling plenty, so they have the last laugh.
Here’s a question for you, Ken- how does it make you feel, to see the games sold again? Not a good feeling in my stomach. 🙂 It’s an uneasy truce, the one I have with Vivendi, as far as faith goes.
And- are you going to upload these videos and commercials? I’d die to see the one of you/Roberta on Dateline!!! 😛
Regards,

ParticipantYes, that’s the one, very nice. But it would be great if Ken would still have some uncompressed movies. Most of the movies on various Sierra games have a very poor quality (though understandable of course for that time).

ParticipantHere are some quotes I wondered about:
“No, they are not at all the same thing- but I don’t see your point. Are you outraged?”
It isn’t too hard to see the point … Why add the question about being outraged? No sign in the posting of that. Trying to provoke a bit?
“Prostitution, homosexuality and crossdressing I have no problem with. Doesn’t mean it’s for me, though:”
We are so glad with that addition. We thought for a moment you were a homosexual prostitute interested in crossdressing. And so brave not to have any problems with these issues.
“But America (and my country, Australia)’s censorship views and such are completely screwed and uber-conservative anyway, so it’s kind of a futile topic in my sad opinion.”
Does that make the topic futile?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantWow, this is crazy stuff!
No, they are not at all the same thing- but I don’t see your point. Are you outraged? I think if people want to crossdress and that gives them identity, who are we to say ‘Wow, that’s wrong’. Especially when we’re taking about an adult computer game. I don’t think parents gave their kids a cop game like PQ either, with bullets and violence.
Prostitution, homosexuality and crossdressing I have no problem with. Doesn’t mean it’s for me, though 🙂
Anyway. As for SEGA and Nintendo censorship, I think censorship is ridiculous. Look at what’s censored, heartwarming scenes like the after-sex scene in Rise of the Dragon’s SEGA CD release.
The reason SEGA censored Sierra games for example was because it means American review boards don’t see it. It’s a way of dumbing games down and getting them on the shelf.
Which sucks, because most video games don’t have enough ‘real’ content, it’s either fairy land or pseudo-over the top-violence which gets a high rating anyway. Censorship liek SEGA’s ROTD job is simply censoring the good aspects of things like sex, which IMO should not be censored.
But America (and my country, Australia)’s censorship views and such are completely screwed and uber-conservative anyway, so it’s kind of a futile topic in my sad opinion.

ParticipantIt’s a great video. I’ve also got a copy. I think we made it to send out to dealers for promoting the game, and to the sales force.
I’m heading out of the country (as usual) .. when I get back, in a week, I’ll work on uploading it here.

ParticipantOoh, I hadn’t seen that other article. Thanks for posting it! Yeah, looking at the label stickers is also another great way to tell a real game from a Slash game. Unfortunately, of course – as mentioned in that article – beyond the simple things to spot, there were many packaging / sealing variations so it can become hard to know.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantI remember some other games before Myst with video actors, e.g. Amazon Guardians of Eden, Countdown or Heart of China. But these didn’t show in general complete live actors like in Phantasmagoria.

ParticipantNot all the Sierra boxes are wrapped that way (as it is said at Vintage Sierra). They weren’t in the first years (see this feature http://www.game-nostalgia.com/sierra/sierra_collector_riddles_1.html)
and also the bigger white boxes with sleeves of a later date didn’t have always folded shrink wrap. Some of the boxes come in both ways; I have checked this a few times and they include the same original Sierra contents. Decisive for the early boxes is the tanned/beige inner box and the system requirement stickers. For the bigger white boxes only the stickers may help to identify their origin.
