ParticipantHello all,
I’m also a huge Sierra On-Line fan, and I’m going to buy all available releases of original Sierra sequels – KQ, SQ, PQ, LSL… (still don’t see QFG, LB, Freddy, Phantas). Hope these complication reveal a bit glory old days of Sierra.. Let it rest in peace.
Hope also they really run well on XP. I already had problems running Roberta Williams’s collection on new platforms.

ParticipantI agree that most of the new compilations will be sold to the “old” fans. Vivendi did such a crappy job on the compilations that I don’t think people who aren’t familiar with the Sierra classics will be buying it. Heck, I’m a big fan and I’m not buying the compilations…
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantI think there will be new Sierra fans from the new compliations but I think most of them are being sold to the already Sierra fans. Some people on the Sierra boards said they are buying two of each to give to family and relatives so there’s a perfect example of recruiting..err.. new fans. 😛
As for who knows about them, I don’t think Vivendi is really putting the full effort to advertise them as much as their lead selling games. It just seems that they released them to say, “There, you got your games, are you happy now?”
As long as there’s a fan base like us, we’ll keep pushing until we squeeze every last game out of them!

ParticipantAh ha! I thought you were spying on us behind the grape vines. : P
Do you think there will be new Sierra Fans with the release of the compilations? Or has Vivendi made such a quiet release of these compilations that only us Sierragamers know about them?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantHaha if I did, I’d be inching my way up the ladder to free those rights! I just frequent the Sierra boards. 🙂

ParticipantHey Julie
Thanks for your reply.
I guess I’ll buy the Quest for Glory collection from the web then…
Do you work for vivendi?Marc-A

ParticipantDOSBox is easy to use. there are many guides out there on how to use DOSBox, but the easiest way to use DOSBox is to set a shortcut to it on your desktop and just drop any DOS game’s executable on it. DOSBox will avoid all timer bugs and incompatiblity problems. It will also work in future versions of Windows, VDMS will not.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantI’ve been using VDMSound, since I couldn’t get DOSBox to work. I’m still curious about a Windows fix, if there is one, though.

ParticipantIt’s so heartwarming everytime someone mentions how Sierra impacted their lives. I love reading everyone’s stories. 🙂
Unfortunately, Vivendi has no plans to make a Quest for Glory compilation. Depending on how well the current compilations sell, they might think of releasing one, or perhaps a Classics Compilation with Laura Bow, EcoQuest, Freddy Pharkas, and all the old goodies. That would be sensible.

ParticipantHi
I went to the softfarm webpage to buy the GoldRush Collecter’s edition, but the phone number doesn’t work, i’ll try sending an e-mail…
Any idea if there are still selling it?
Thanks

ParticipantJust play the game in DOSBox to avoid NTVDM errors.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantHow’d you do it? I’m getting the same error.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantThanks! It worked!
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantMy best guess would be that it’s a timer bug. You might be able to download a fix from http://geocities.com/belzorash/

ParticipantOur current agreement with Vivendi stipulates that the game may only be offered as a free download. I believe that AGD Interactive has the same agreement with them, meaning that neither they nor anyone else can distribute their licensed games on physical media. Legal discussions with Vivendi about some aspects of the project are still ongoing. The following Gamespy article from last December might give you a clearer idea of the legalities involved:

ParticipantI’m curious to see your and Roberta’s thoughts of the final project. It looks like a very black (almost gothic?) game, as oppsoed to most KQ games’ atmosphere.
But, I guess there’s not much point speculating just yet, or for that matter critiquing a non-existent game.
Ken: Do you think it will feel like a KQ game? I get the distinct feeling this will be much more a niche game for the actual fans of the TSL project itself (as in, their forum crowd), as opposed to say the KQ2+VGA project which appealed to the Sierra community at large.
But anyway, I’ll write more when it’s released.

ParticipantI’ve completed a trailer for the project in case anybody is interested (it’s slightly less than 1 meg in size) – http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/41659541/

ParticipantWe having played “The Silver Lining” demo. How is it?
Generally, we’ve been supportive of the project, and what we’ve seen has looked great.
My primary concern has been that building a game is a LOT of work, and I’ve been worried that these people might have all their work ruined by Sierra enforcing their copyrights. I’ve heard conflicting reports on what their agreement with Sierra is. In some reports, they are now fine, and can market their game – and, in others, they can continue to develop the game, but there are limits on their ability to distribute it.
Hopefully the demo is great, and they have no problems marketing the game – but, I don’t know.

ParticipantIt’s a semi-common problem for games based in DOS. All the Windows-based GameTap adventure games I’ve tried (except Beyond Atlantis) have used my Windows mouse settings, so they’ve been fine. Willy Beamish, which GameTap also has, had the same problem as SQ5.
I haven’t contacted GameTap support yet.

ParticipantThe KO VII CD-Rom included indeed the trailer of Phantasmagoria, but the original poster referred to the “making of” video, which is much more interesting (see the link he mentioned). I hope Ken still has that one, preferably uncompressed.
I do not know if the suggestions about YouTube or video.google.com are as interesting as the one about photobucket.com; at least I see many videos there that are too heavy compressed.
See for instance this “ within the beast within”, a behind the scenes of GK 2:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7205164237621477726&q=within+the+beast+within
It’s horribly compressed. Btw, I have no idea what its source is, perhaps someone knows?
Another great site to upload big files for a certain period is: http://www.yousendit.com/Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantF.Y.I.
‘On October 9, Universal Music Group (UMG), the world leader in music, and YouTube, the number one website for sharing original videos online – with more than 100 million individual visitors per day – announced an agreement giving YouTube and its users access to thousands of videos by of all genres. YouTube and UMG have developed a process to protect the copyrights of UMG artists using filters to block the downloading of pirated content.’
This came from Vivendi’s we site. It might not be a good choice to use YouTube.Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantWow thanks for the link Tom! Pretty amazing site!

ParticipantDo you have the same problem with other game you downloaded from Gametap or is this the only game you’ve downloaded?
I know there are 3rd party “mouse accelerator” for Windows but I don’t know for sure if this will work in the Gametap “shell”.
Did you email Gametap or are they aware of the problem?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantAnd ofcourse we also have the now infamous http://www.youtube.com
And like Brandom already mentioned I don’t think you’ll run into a lot of copyright problems because I think the video will be viewed as a game trailer…
The video was shipped with the first release of King’s Quest 7. At the time I kinda regarded it as a game (teaser) trailer. Don’t know if KQ 7 2.0 was shipped with the video…
You can download the 18 MB version in: Sierra Museum >> Phantasmagoria Museum >> Phantasmagoria music and trailers

ParticipantKen,
There is, of course, video.google.com, but they do have the no copyrighted material stipulation. Of course, there is tons of stuff that gets uploaded such as fan music videos (music by a band with video footage put together by the fan) and other such things that blur the line on what is uploaded that is copyrighted. So, especially since what you’ll be uploading is so old, you may not run into any problems with it.
