    (re: Kq9) Hi Ken,
I don’t think there is an issue here whether KQ9 is going to succeed or not, because quite simply the guys are going to distribute the game for free as a fan-made game (like Tierra did).

(re: re: What’s your attitude towards fan-projects?) There is nothing I would like better than to see all the old Sierra people back making games again. Adventure games are not dead any more. It’s games like Syberia and The Longest Journey that prove that beyond a dought. So come on guys, give it another try. As far as titles and stories go, I wouldn’t care what you had to change. I would play them no matter what.
I have been playing DreamCatcher games latly and they have very nice graphics but they are all missing the feeling that I got playing the old Sierra games and that it something that they may never have.

    (re: Kq9) Thank You, Ken
These guys looked to me like they were trying to do the right thing and they said they wern’t going to try to sell the game. So I just thought you might like to see it was out there because if they put out a bad game it might not be good even though it will be a free game. Like I said before I am one of your’s and Roberta’s major fans.

(The Sierra Mystery) Wow, amazing how many of you guys felt like responding to my comment. It’t really nice to see, that I am not the only one not quite content with things the way they are at the moment (Thanks to Jim!)
You see, it is kind of puzzeling me over and over again. My point is that apparently there is both, talented and professional game designers willing to make adventure games (I’m referring to Al Lowe in particular, whose LSL Games I loved most!) and loads, and I mean it, of people not only willing but absolutely extatic about buying an “new-old-adventure”. Now the only thing that seems to be missing is the Name Sierra, which, as Ken correctly mentioned, is not what it used to be anyway. The problem for me is to get those things into my head at the same time, which until now just won’t work out. You see what I mean?
    Thanks, Dan

Don’t forget the team at http://www.kq9.org. While nothing has yet to be released, They have what looks to be a dedicated team of talent working on it.

(re: What are the odds?) Well if you take even a cursory look around the internet you will see a huge number of people with absolutely amazing artistic abilities. That’s a big thing for me, because I believe that each part of the adventure game is equally needed: art, story, puzzles, characters, etc. Now of course not many of those people may be involved in adventure games, but some are, and others probably would be, if a company hired them.
Secondly, I think the odds are good. Take Tierra for example. Their long-term plan, as far as I last heard, is to start making commercial adventure games under a new company name, after they finish re-making old Sierra games in VGA (who knows how many more they will make, that’s up to them).

I have the Leisure Suit Larry Greatest hits CD and hope and pray that Sierra get off of their candy-asses and put Ken and Al Lowe back to work. Or maybe they need to register for a night or two at the Smackdown Hotel !! If you smell what The Rock …………… is cookin’!

(re: QFG1 FULL FACS MANUAL on it’s way!) If all goes well for me to do this, I have some more real great rarities I wanna send out for everyone, I’m happy that i’m able to share with everyone these things, cuz i’ve looked and looked, and it’s really tough to find full manuals of these kinda things. So I plan to fix all that if i’m able to that here. I’ve managed to collect a lot of these Sierra Games, about every KQ and SQ and QFG in complete boxes. And I know how “easy” it is to find that kinda stuff, so im gonna put my best into getting a copy for everyone here who hasn’t already gotten em.
Oh, and whoever sent the QFG2 map, THANKS alot, i lost that thing, but now i actually just printed up a full sized one. Whatta dork I am!
I’ve also got the Tech manual for QFG1Remake scanned inside and out, it’s a tech manual, i think, but it’s got tons of pictures in it worth seeing.
Thanks for leaving me a message Ken! 🙂

(re: Kq9) What do they get by holding on to the old Sierra games anyway if they don’t want to do anything with them? A Larry movie would be hilarious, I can’t even imagine. I think you at least deserve the respect of an answer.

I tried for about 7 years to buy the rights to do a Leisure-Suit Larry movie. No one ever said no, they just wouldn’t make a decision.

(re: What are the odds?) I know what you mean, honestly in the past five years the only game that I have played is Team Fortress Classic the Half Life mod.I have played that for hours on end and am still not tired of it. It incorporates awesome teamplay and strategy. It is really the only game of its type that I enjoy. I do feel as though something is lacking of course since I grew up on your adventure games. I try to play other games even on consoles but they just don’t seem to captivate me and I quickly lose interest. I will sit and try to think about what could possibly be done different since the market is clogged with the same thing over and over. I hope something will come quick to revolutionize the game. There are too many uncreative people that have to jump on other’s ideas that they quickly diminish anything that may have hope.

The current Sierra is not the old Sierra.

(re: What are the odds?) Do you play any games now Ken?

None at all .. part of my problem was that after building games for 20 years, they had all started to look alike.

I was running out of ideas. Had I stayed with Sierra, I would have been thinking of some other directions to take the company. I’m not sure what this means, but it’s one of the reasons I liked online games .. no one at the time had done massively multiplayer games right when I was running Sierra. There must still be some uncharted territory, but I’m not sure what it is. My problem with playing games now is that they all look alike .. no one seems to be doing anything radically new.

(re: Kq9) I know the people making sq7 have contacted Sierra about it telling them what they were doing and basically asked permission but Sierra never responded.

(re: What are the odds?) Check out:
    Link: http://www.garagegames.com(http://www.garagegames.com)

It’s by Jeff Tunnel, who worked for me at Dynamix. His technology is great. It might be a good way to build a game.
I definitely think it’s the right time to start a game company. The distribution model is changing. In my day, Sierra and Electronic Arts had a “lock” on distribution. All software was sold through retail, and retailers wouldn’t buy from small companies.
Today: it is starting to be possible to build a company that depends on net-distribution only.
If I were 20 years younger, I’d do it again, and use the net for distribution.

(re: Kq9) AHa … I looked at the site .. it’s not an “official” Sierra project.
The problem with these is that Sierra will never (or, at least, I would be shocked) give approval to a non-Sierra project with Kings Quest. That means the game only has two possibilities; fail (and, Sierra won’t sue because who cares), or succeed (and, get sued)

(re: re: re: re: Why not do something new?) I have to agree with Dan. Sierra made some of the best adventure games that will ever be played. I am playing all the new ones that are commming out and they very beutiful but there is just something missing that the old sierra games had. I too would like to see you guys make another game. My two most faverite games ever where KQ6 and LSL6 and I just loved them all. I still have all the original LSL and KQ games and still play them.

(re: Kq9) Yes, for that matter I would also been interested in knowing what you think of Sq-7 (
    Link: http://www.Sq7.org(http://www.Sq7.org)
) and the whole fan-revolution in general. It’s really testimony to the quality of your games that when the fans could no longer get new games, they took it upon themselves to make their own.

(re: Thanks!) “When I was young, one of my biggest fantasies was that Sierra will discover I am such an avid gamer and will invite me to work on designing new “Quests”. “
I know how you feel. It was tough for me to be in management at Sierra. All I could think about was how much fun the developers were having. My hope post-acquisition was that I would be able to stay on at Sierra and work on games. It was a huge disappointment that it didn’t work out that way….
