(re: Adventures That Might Have Been) Willie Beamish didn’t make the cut – not enough sales.
As to other series that didn’t make it: I’m sure there were, but I’m blanking on them now. I’ll post something as I remember it.
I liked the Quest designation, but everyone started doing it – and, we lost the rights to the name Heros Quest (it became Quest for Glory). I wish we had stuck with it, but it became kind of a joke in the industry, so we stopped using it.

(re: Adventures That Might Have Been) Ken,
Kind of following along with the same line of questioning…. were there any gaming series that were proposed up front, thought maybe to be a potential hit, but didn’t make the cut conceptually, that followed the “Quest” name series like – KQ, SQ, PQ, HQ, EQ, etc. For instance – Kitty Quest, Playground Quest, Job Quest, you know – something like that. Just curious. I always found it interesting that a lot of the early games always had “Quest” in their titles.

Not wishing to tread on ken’s toes, but I think I know of at least two game which were cancelled: Willy Beamish II was announced to have been put into development in an Interaction magazine, and Capitol Punishment was never released, though I don’t know if it was actually finsihed, after some sort of incident involving men in black suits and dark glasses. Now –  is this true, Ken, or have I been playing too much Gobliiins?

(re: re: Problems/Help with this website) Give me an example of what you mean — you mean something like “Bill has posted 125 messages and is now a senior adventurer” … why is this good? I’m not against it, just not sure what the benefit is.

(re: Adventures That Might Have Been) Hmmm…..
Most of the series were still going when I left Sierra.
Manhunter ended because the Murrays left to do games for Broderbund. To the extent other series ended, it was because they didn’t sell well. For instance, Freddy Pharkus … it sold ok, but not well enough to keep it going. I’m sure I would have put another Space Quest game into development. Also Larry – and, of course a Kings Quest. Phantasmagoria was “killed” when Phantasmagoria 2 didn’t sell (Roberta wasn’t involved in the second game).
As to painful decisions to shut down a series: I can’t remember any – if there was a market for a game, I put it into development. If there wasn’t, the decision was easy.

    (re: Game Sound)

i had a problem recently with sound playing PQ1 (VGA remake) on an old P1 windows 98 machine. it was still too fast for the game to recognize my sound card and I got a “can’t initialize sound” error message when I launched the game.

i downloaded the GoSierra utility from Quest Studios and it fixed the problem. there’s a link below.

ackkk! i hate it when people say this!!!

the genre is not dead. adventure games can be profitable. just look at the showing at E3 last month.

That’s a nice story. I wish I’d gotten to tour Sierra as a kid… I probably would have fainted, too.

That chicken leg scene is from Quest for Glory 1….

Also, are you a real Thief character, or a Fighter/Magic User with Thief Skills?

(re: What made the old Sierra great) Living outside the US, I never noticed all that stuff about customer support. I actually had a rather bad experience with it – when I bought the first Gabriel Knight game (the CD version) it got stuck somewhere in the middle of the game and wouldn’t play beyond that point. The shop I got it from wouldn’t take it back, and when I
E-mailed Sierra about it I got no response at all.
It was rather annoying, since I assumed that if you spend your money on an original game, which I hardly ever do, you should at least have some certainty that you’ll be able to play it through.

(re: I have to say Sierra sucks now) A lot of people will disagree with that, but most of them will be action gamers.
Just because Sierra doesn’t make games you like anymore, doesn’t mean they suck. They have very successful action games, such as Half-Life, Alien vs. Predetor, and the awsome No one lives forever. The people who like that kind of games probably enjoy them just as much as you would a good adventure.
Bare in mind that a commercial company has but one and only goal – to make money. Sentiments don’t enter into it. Adventure games are not profitable nowdays, and that’s why the genre is dead.

(re: QfG4 – Dialogue boxes) That’ll be a problem ‘cuz I don’t have the cd, the game’s on my hard-drive. I’ll figure out something. It’s just a darn shame, that in the middle of a sentence the text box disappears. Oh well, it’s only a game.
Big up to the webmaster. Great site.

    (re: Interaction Magazine Poll) Brandon:
If you do a CD, you are welcome to advertise it here and sell it. My guess is that at something like $20 you might sell enough to make it a worthwhile effort (or, maybe not? – I don’t know). I’d certainly send you some money as a thank you for doing the scanning.
The only wrinkle is that theoretically Sierra could complain that you are selling something that belongs to them. I’d be surprised if they did this though. InterAction is/was great advertising for Sierra’s products. A company would have a hard time showing how it harms them for their advertising to have broader distribution.

(re: QfG4 – Dialogue boxes) I had a similar problem with the KQ6 speach version. For some reason, the game cannot access your CD-Rom drive, on which the speach audio files are. Because of this, the game will simply skip all the text dialogue.
I don’t really know a solution for this, except making sure the CD-Rom is in your CD-Drive. 🙂

    (re: Interaction Magazine Poll) Brandon,
I think this is a great idea. I agree with those who say that the first scans should be, for archival purposes, complete and carefully done. I would definitely pay to have these “big versions” on CD. For purposes of getting them down to 10 mega for inclusion in the site, non-sierra related pages could be removed, and two pages per pdf page could be adopted…
Furthermore – I have a few issues of Interaction (Fall 199, Summer 1992, Fall 1992, Fall 1994, Spring 1995, Fall 1995, Holiday 1995, Fall 1996 and Holiday 1996). Some are missing a few pages and stuff, but I would love to contribute in any way possible to this archiving.
I loved Interaction Magazine when I was a kid… The games, the writing style, the ads… Interaction IS Sierra… And by God, it was great…

I have the same problem with sound on older games. If you care enough to buy a new sound card for it, just go to your nearest Best Buy and ask the people there which of their sound cards will play sound for older games. They told me once, but I dont remember which ones do.

(re: Error message in KQ4) Hi
I had a problem like that and I went to the game folder and fond the file was missing and it was a sound file so I just coppied another sound file and renamed it to the one that was missing. When I ran the game again it worked fine but of course sounded kinda wierd at that location. LOL
