I’d say go for it. The more representation these games have the better.

I just discovered the cookies issue last week. I’m working on a fix for it now. It’s not a simple fix, but I should have it by Monday.
I spoke with the tech writer today, and he has started work.
    Thank you,

Ken, did you know that the Talkspot site can only be accessed if you have cookies enabled? Was that intentional? (When I try to go there with cookies turned off, I just get a ‘page cannot be found’ error… the average user probably won’t realize what the problem is and will think your site is down.)

I know you just said you have contracted with someone to write documentation for your software… I just wanted to mention that I am a professional writer. I specialize in distilling high-level information (i.e., how to build a website) for low-level audiences. I have experience writing software documentation and tutorials. If you’re going to need more help, feel free to shoot me an email —fov@yahoo.com

    (re: Software Ratings)

this is an interesting piece of history!

the ratings didn’t affect me much because the system wasn’t in place until i was a teenager… i might feel differently if they’d kept me from playing games i wanted to play. i vaguely remember a store clerk at Egghead trying to keep me from buying a game with a mature rating — my dad was along, but i don’t remember if he made me put the game back or if he let me buy it. don’t even remember what game it was… i guess i wasn’t too upset about it!

    (re: re: Software Ratings)
I agree – the slider bars would have been better. Or, a simple list of what is in the game. This would give more information than “just a rating” and might be a little trickier for the retailers to ban software based on.
I think I chose the ratings system that we used because at that time I was trying to send a message to the world that computer games deserved to be taken seriously as an entertainment medium. I always wanted to do everything I could to “link” Sierra, and the computer game industry, to Hollywood. Copying their ratings system I thought was a move in that direction.

    (re: Software Ratings)

I love the software rating idea, but personaly hate the one they have out now (nothing against you ken). The one I like was the one my copy of “Final DOOM” came with. It we 3/4 little thermeters. One represented violence, languague, sex, and gore. The higher on the meter the more something had in it. It gave a better description of what was IN the game then the “Teen for 13+ children”. I belive the use of the word “hell” was enough to give Doom the euqivilent of the teen rating back then.

I just never felt the rating systems (TV, movie, and game) realy told what parents wanted to know. I felt it also stood the test of time. Saying a game had frontal nudity is a costant, but the ratings change (when Robocop was R when it came out, but was changed to PG-13 when that rating was added.)

(re: re: re: Manhunter website (thanks!)) Banjo:
The software that runs this message board/website is meant to be kind of a generic “website construction set”. It’s early in development, but as you can see, it works fine even though it’s missing lots of features (that I’m busily coding).
Go to http://www.talkspot.com there you will see that you can easily build your own website. Don’t worry – I won’t charge you anything. There are currently no manuals or tutorials for the system, which complicates things. I contracted someone to write those, but they haven’t gotten started yet. Email me from time to time as you get stuck, and I’ll get you going again.
    Good luck!

(re: re: Manhunter website (thanks!)) Wow! Thanks for the kind offer; your help would be VERY welcome, Ken.
Just let me know what the next step from here is, since I’m pretty website illiterate! Even with my woeful skills, however, I’d love to help introduce more Sierra fans to the oft-overlooked world of Orb oppression, killer robots and trendy brown robes!
Ken, let me also take this opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks for all that you, Roberta, and everyone else from the “glory days” of Sierra have given to the world, and the joy you brought to me. As many on this site will attest, together you made many a life that little bit brighter.
    Cheers,

(re: QFG 3: Shadows of Darkness???)

what ended up happening is that quest for glory 3 was supposed to be set as shadows of darkness, known to us as qg4. however, when the coles were designing shadows, they said that they realized that the hero himself was not ready for the type of battles he would face, and so they went to the wages of war in a jungle scenario to flesh out more of the story. that’s from an article that i read way back when sierra had their own little quarterly magazine that was basically an advertisement for all of their new games. hope that helps you.

(re: QFG 3: Shadows of Darkness???) i remember reading about this at the tierra boards (sorry, can’t find the thread now) — i think you’re right, that they decided to expand the story after that teaser had already been included in QfG2.
maybe someone else (like Ken!) can give you a more interesting answer.

(re: re: LSL movie) LOL. Dooby Gal is a dead ringer for Larry Laffer.
But seriously, I hope they don’t make a Leisure Suit Larry movie. Not for the sake that if it is juvenile and bad it will soil his reputation, but for the mere fact I want to make the film… Can you hold out for a few years while I finish film school? 😉

Very sorry to hear of his demise.

I never did play Manhunter, but I loved Championship Boxing (published by Sierra, BTW) and the Ancient Art of War series.

(re: re: re: re: re: re: Retro the old sierra) So it’s your belief that if you had training and proper spelling then YOUR the man?!? get real here. the whole bus. thing is made complicated and lawyer like by stupid educations like you refer. the whole thing is based one one thing in transaction, it’s either yes or no, that people like you think otherwise is your loss not ours. but this board is not meant to discuss this i believe it’s meant for sierra fans. so tell me what do you lose from this? there might be a option to see the old sierra games one more time, or not… so again tell me, what holds you back in telling what you want to see? or is it , that if it’s no, you got hurt in your feelings and it will take you alt least 3 years to get over it?? i don’t think so, so please let’s end this dumb discussion.

    sincerely,

(re: Manhunter website) Great idea! there is’nt too much info about that great series. 🙂
You could make a website with all the tricks, easter eggs and solutions of the games. Differences between versions, boxarts, manuals, screenshots, interviews with the authors.. something like te SpaceQuest.net but about Manhunter!
Go on and good luck with such a nice project! 🙂

    (Manhunter website) Hi everyone!
Hey, I was thinking pretty strongly about making a Manhunter website, since the games have so little representation on the Internet. There’s plenty of SQ, KQ and QFG sites but no MH ones.
I was therefore curious, if anyone would be interested in a Manhunter site before I go to all the trouble (if I’m the only Manhunter fan out there, I needn’t bother, eh?). If I’m NOT alone, what sort of stuff would other fans like to see on the site? Let me know!
    Cheers,
    Banjo

(re: re: re: re: re: Retro the old sierra) Am I the only one here who believes this guy is 100% bogus?
Not really. I was wary since the first post since I usually expect people who had business training to be proficient in spelling and grammar. I can’t help but find it hard to believe.

(re: A lost topic) I deleted the message … Roberta had posted a response, but then later decided she could have phrased her response better, and had me remove the message.
It had nothing to do with you or your message.
She was commenting on KQ8, and her feelings about the project. It’s tough to sell your company and have the new owners do things so differently.

(re: re: re: Retro the old sierra) Perhaps it might be a good idea to create an e-mail adress where people can post their individual answers to the questions. The adventage would be that other sites could be involved easier. Just an idea

(re: re: Retro the old sierra) okay as far of the postings regarding retro old sierra:
What were looking for is as following:
    * would you buy a new adventure game regarding one ofthese adventures?
    * if so wich one?
    * what would you like to see in it (ex. a point to click interface or a text typing interface (our favorit))
*and for Ken Williams, Roberta Williams, Al lowe, Marc crowe and Scott murphy would you be interested (for the right money) to do one?
(if anybody around here know those people in person please let them now and respond)
So if we get the feeling of you that a lot of people are waiting for these games, we then take the next step and trying to negotiate and buy the rights from vivendi (if the price is right for them, they will sell…why not collect money for something you don’t use anymore?)
If the interest in these games is right, and the designers say that they will consider and talk to us and we can agree, then the next step is here.
What do we want: simple! reform the former design group put them in a new company and give them the tools (money) to do another game! it’s that simple but…. for example, we read interviews on the web too, and for example is marc crowe (who works for game company, or he own’s it) will do another game with scott murphy.. anyway this is how clear as it can be for now and hopefully you guys will help trying to get the designers to do this or at least consider it..

    we hope for your support,

    Sincerely,

    DH

Yes – I would certainly buy them, if they remain adventure games and are fairly faithful to the original.

You may have trouble getting them from Vivendi, though.

You also may have trouble getting the developers back.

Could you provide more details? Do you have a Web site?

    Thanks.
