ParticipantKen,
Looks like your buddy Walter Forbes will be doing 12 years in the clink.

ParticipantThose are pretty awesome. I started playing this again last month. I know many did not recieve it well as a King’s Quest game because it’s action oriented, but I’ve got love for this game.

ParticipantThe images are pretty small, but interesting nonetheless… I put them all together in one image to make it easier. Let’s see if this works:

ParticipantGood call…I compressed it into a RAR and it’s now 368 MB. Should save some time on the download as well.

ParticipantHint: using some form of compression will do wonders for conserving bandwith. 😉

ParticipantFor me, the Sierra games I have are a special link to the past, a link to better times in my life. A time when the computer was a mystical device where I could escape, and let me tell you, I was in the worlds Sierra created back then.
I used to have a sizeable Transformers collection, and I sold it. I do not miss it. On the other hand, one look at my Sierra games boxes and I am transported to better times, playing through King’s Quest I with my older brother. Even computer game stores had a mystical feeling back then.
It’s not about the games itself anymore. It’s about happier times where my imagination was free and powerful, and the worries of the world where unknown to me. I’m not living in the past, but I do like to look through that window sometimes, and take a peek and recapture some of those feelings, albeit breifly.
Those Sierra game boxes take me there.

ParticipantI could not agree more with the heart felt value of the Sierra games! As a collector is collecting video games a good investment?

ParticipantWhile growing up, we shared memories with Sierra. Sierra did wonders to our imaginations and intellect and therefore changed us in that certain way we can’t really describe with words. I couldn’t imagine who I’d be without having that piece of memory in my childhood.
It’s that something we can’t let go. Let it be a toy, a doll, or a Sierra game, working or not working. It’s that worn box and dog-eared manual that grew up with us that we just can’t part with.
Awww.. *tear*

ParticipantI agree: for me too the title of best KQ adventure is an issue between KQ3 and KQVI. My best remains KQ3, but I admit in advance that I am partial to the amazing group of AGI adventures from KQ3 (included) onwards.
During those times (Ken may confirm or deny of course) it seems to me that there was the perfect combination of fresh ideas (guaranteeing new topics and plot), tight programming groups (in real control of the whole project) and simplicity + stability of the AGI system (known well it allowed itself to be exploited to the max and programmers remained focus on the core of the adventure and on making it flow). It is not by chance to me that in those times besides KQ3 also the first Leisure Suit Larry came out, SQI and II, the innovative PQI, the beautiful and historically accurate Gold Rush…
Of course, the later evolutions were needed.
Ken and Roberta were right in pushing for the technological and interface advances: they were their vision (a sort of interactive movie) and also businesswise the only way to proceed (proof be that old Sierra lasted much longer than Infocom which remained tied to the text and than other less innovative competitors).Among the adventures that came after AGI there were for sure some great ones too, and KQ VI is one of the best. Indeed very good.
I just finished replaying it and, while I did not like a lot the very first part, almost all the rest is great. Plot is long and with depth and it is a rare case of adventure with truly multiple endings, which adds a huge lot to it. Well done Roberta !
I also agree on the judgement on Gabriel Knight.
Personally, I think all three the GK are truly amazing. Each with its different aspects and tecnique, represents a perfect piece of what to me can be considered the best Sierra series as a whole. While the other series are probabily even more highly remembered by many, but they include a combination of number one adventures, but also some that are good but not perfect and a few that are less accurate. GK instead has three adventures only in the series, but all great to me. Jane Jensen is in fact a good example of a Sierra writer who maintained plot above all, even in truly new systems, and you can easily tell. If I am not mistaken, she was coming from a contribution to… KQ VI, and for sure she was of great support to Roberta !!!Well to close, above all, I will always thank Ken and Roberta for the great old Sierra times ! As said, first of all I’ll never forget the good old AGI ones, but each Sierra adventure I played gave me a lot of enjoyment I will never forget.

ParticipantAn interesting question as far as collectibles go. I guess people who collect records probably keep them even after they have the CD for nostalgia reasons. Or they probably still do have a record player to play them. Or maybe they convert the record to MP3 audio themself, and keep the record case for the liner notes. I have an old 486 that I keep just for playing the old games, making my collecting them without problem because I’m able to and do play them. Also I’m sure for some the box and manuals are a valid reason to collect unto themselves without being able to play the games.

ParticipantThe images didn’t come through on my ‘puter either. (Didn’t want you to feel all alone, Julie.)
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantI can’t see them either…
If, for some reason, the images are CMYK instead of RGB, they won’t show up in a browser – they’ll appear as those red x’s.
Imageshack may disallow hotlinking… I notice you didn’t try to just add them to your message using SierraGamer’s message editor… it will let you upload them and put them right into the message…
Or, if you want to email them to me – klassen@hotmail.com – I can host them for you.

ParticipantI don’t know, nico. There must be something wrong either with my computer or the site. Is anyone else having trouble seeing the images besides me?

ParticipantLaura Bow has to solve the mystery of who murdered Santa. Was it Mrs. Claus, one of the elves, Rudolph?

ParticipantYeah, KQ6 is definitely the best King’s Quest game and maybe even the best Sierra game of all time, although KQ3 is a very close contender and depending on my mood I may say KQ3 is the best. Some other Sierra games with excellent atmosphere were Conquests of Camelot, Gabriel Knight 2, and Colonel’s Bequest. The Quest for Glory games always had great atmosphere too. I think Beast Within may be another strong contender for best Sierra game ever, not that I’d call it my favorite but you can’t deny how well put together it was.

ParticipantI always thought the uniform looked the same too. I think Fry is more like Roger Wilco though. And Futurama is coming back sometime in the near future. I think it will have new episodes on Comedy Central.

ParticipantTo be honest, I don’t think there is going to be another MMORPG that can beat WoW. At least not for a year or 2. There are about 4.5 million players worldwide and in a couple of weeks The Burning Crusade will be available…
Let’s see what happens 🙂

ParticipantI know I have that old version on two 5.25″ disks. I’m actually trying to get an old drive right now so that I can get the game off of them and save it.
When I acquired newer versions of the games for my computer I remember being surprised when I first saw “Light” spelled correctly because I always assumed it was some classic inside joke.

ParticipantHahah, I remember thinking that the first time I saw his character appear!
Cool, I’m not alone 🙂

ParticipantHey
Here’s some interesting MoE screenshots from 1996-1997 that you might like that I’ve found from various archived websites. If anyone has any more pictures, please add them. It’d be really cool to see the design docs and/or other interesting material to see what MoE was like.
