(re: re: Thanks for this website!) I still play Jones occasionally to kill time (and it’s easy to win) but like most of the games sierra made there was fun & humor included, so I don’t think it was a totally boring game…. I mean how many games can you play where if you don’t buy new clothes that after a while you get to walk around “nekkid”?

(re: re: re: Quick Opinion Poll) I agree with Roberta on sierrafans.com. It would make it easy for people to find & the addy kinda tells you what the website is about.

(re: old layout showing up… maybe cookie related?) just tried it on my PC (which has a favorite to the same URL) and, lo and behold, had the same problem. So it’s not just a Mac issue. I am using IE6, running WinXP.

(re: re: re: re: old layout showing up… maybe cookie related?) A similar thing happened to me when I had newMainFrame.asp bookmarked. I’m on a pc, and instead of the site popping up at all, an error message popped up.
I’m at the airport waiting to catch a flight – I can’t believe it, but I powered on my laptop and the wireless card immediately had me surfing.
I’ll check into this on the plane. I am aware that the link that gets recorded when someone selects “add to favorites” is no good. I’ll look for a way to code around it.

(re: re: Phantasmagoria 2) I would check out Phantas 2 if I were you. Just like everyone says, it’s not as good as 1. However, they are both very different games, so it is hard to judge. In movie terms, Phantas 1 is like House on Haunted Hill (the original with Vincent Price), and Phantas 2 is like an 80s thriller (I think–it was hard coming up with a film equal).
I am also a big FMV fan, and Phantas 1 really stands out amongst the rest. I think it has to do with the backgrounds being entirely computer generated. I know that at times it doesn’t look real. With games like Phantas 2 and Gabriel Knight 2, some of the locations were done on actual sets, and in my opinion the production value just isn’t as good in these locations.

Heh, sorry to spring it on you right before you left!

I wasn’t able to empty my cache (kept getting a message that I couldn’t delete items in use, even after I shut down IE), but I figured out a little bit more about the problem. In my favorites, I have this URL bookmarked:

    http://www.sierragamers.com/MainFrame.asp

When I start up IE and go to the favorite, I’m automatically redirected to http://www.sierragamers.com/newMainFrame.asp

However, if I navigate away from the site and then back to it (using the favorite), I’m taken to MainFrame.asp and am not redirected. Once I shut down IE and start it again, the favorite redirects me to newMainFrame.asp

Clearly, I could fix this by updating my favorite (grin), but maybe it’s indicative of other problems with pages not refreshing/redirecting correctly? I have had this URL in my favorites for months, and only started having this problem this week.

ps I was mistaken when I said before that refreshing the browser got rid of the old layout. It doesn’t. But if I type http://www.sierragamers.com into the address bar, it brings me back to newMainFrame.asp

Wow!!! I’ve never heard of such a thing …
I’m leaving for a flight in about an hour – so, I can’t tangle with it now. Maybe when I get to Europe.
Most likely, it’s related to the cache on your browser. I’d try clearing the cache to see what happens. I did just make a lot of changes in the Mac-related code, so maybe I broke something.
I’ll check back with you tomorrow (assuming I can find an internet cafe)

I liked Jones! I was unemployed for a month or two a few years ago, and found myself playing it constantly.

It reminds me of the board game Careers, which was a favorite of mine growing up.

I especially liked the way they poked fun at the marbles that were used as playing pieces… i.e. “You stayed home this weekend to wash your marble.”

I remember seeing this art in a catalog or magazine, and liking it better than the final art… but I was always distracted by Genesta’s breasts. (And I was a 10 year old girl!)

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’m a huge FMV fan and there are so few choices, I figured I might as well try it in spite of the bad reviews. I haven’t gotten around to buying it yet though. Interested to see what others say though.

hmm. Are you getting an error message when you try to launch the game? Do you have no sound, or some sound that sounds bad? Any games in particular that you’ve tried this on?

I don’t know what to tell you, but am willing to fiddle around with them and see if I can get sound working. My setup isn’t the same as yours though (i have a 1.7 ghz processor, but it’s running XP).

    (re: Sierra Classics)

Back in 1999, I was looking for Championship Boxing (one of my all time favorites). It was hard to find on the net (a search with that name would give all types of results). I even emailed Barry Murry, cocreator of the game, who said he didn’t have a copy (but would love to get one).

I noticed on Sierra’s Tech Help page that they still had that old game listed there! So I called them up and asked them where I could get a copy.

The person asked, “Exactly when was this game made?”

    “1984” I replied.

    (long silence)

“Your best bet is to look on abandonware sites on the Internet.”

So with their blessings, I was let loose.

Are you running Windows 2000 or XP? If you are, try setting it to run in compatibility mode.

The install is on the first disc of the collection. You install it from the autorun of disc 1, but you will need to play it with disc 3 in the  drive to have the audio. Also VDMSound is for Win 2000 and XP not ME, though the developer is working on a version for 9x.

(re: re: re: Tech Help on Older Games..) Do you have the DOS drivers for your sound card installed? Your PCI sound card is a 32 bit card, and the old DOS games, even when running in a DOS box in windows, expects 16 bit access to the hardware. The DOS drivers will give you 16 bit emulation.
Another solution would be to try Vlad’s VDMSound for Win 9x,
    Link: Win9x + VDMSound **ALPHA**(http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?s=6cb69ecb51f7331da8a2651dc9f6df0e&threadid=900)
but remember it is just in the alpha stage of development and not as well developed as the one for 2K and XP.

Phantasmagoria II is VERY different than Phantas I.
My guess is that you can buy it pretty cheaply these days. I’d say “play the first chapter, and if you like it: keep going. If not, don’t”. It’s darker than Phantas I, with more serious themes. I’m sure there are some who like Phantas II better than Phantas I, although I personally preferred Phantas I (given that my wife designed it, I’d better!)

in reply to: Any Games after Sierra? #25021

(re: Any Games after Sierra?) I do think a lot about doing a game, and Roberta and I have seriously considered it a few times – but, we’ve never done anything. I don’t know that we ever will. We’d like to, but we just don’t have time – and besides: there’s a lot of creative people out there who deserve a chance to do THEIR games. Maybe this board will help inspire them to get to work.
My current project can be seen at http://www.talkspot.com – it’s a turnkey solution for anyone who wants a website (with a focus on corporate intra/extra nets and groups/associations), and is the basis for this website. It’s early in development, but is working great. I’d encourage anyone who is considering wants a website to give it a try (for at least the next six months it’s FREE, and there’s no commitment whatsoever). If all you need is a simple single-page website, there are better solutions – but, if you need a complex site, with security, email verification, mailing lists, etc, my software has no peer.
Talkspot isn’t a game (and, isn’t as fun to develop as a game), but it fits my lifestyle better. A game requires a full time effort over multiple years, with a large team. We’re living mostly outside the US and travelling most of the time. Generally, I can develop TalkSpot at my own pace, and work alone. Roberta isn’t currently involved, but says she will start working with me soon.
Originally, Talkspot was born out of my asking myself what I could start that one of my sons could takeover. I had the idea and started building it, and then presented it to my sons, each of which yawned and promptly found real jobs. It’s been fun, so I’ve kept going.
