(re: re: re: Dryad musical theme in HQ1) Lol. Yes, I also heard the tune on a classical radio station… I looked up the song’s name on the on-line playlist. It’s a very nice tune… I wonder why it was used for QFG4?

These pop up for me too, but I use a modem (only popup when online). For anti-spyware, try searching yahoo for Spybot. it’s a good program (just make sure you don’t delete and adware you need to run programs)

also, in the spyware program, they have a thing just for you:

These are sent using the Messenger service integrated into Windows 2000 and XP (try the ‘net send’ command to see for yourself).
To disable the Messenger service, go to Start –> All Programs –> Administrative Tools –> Component Services. In Component Services, click on Services (Local), then on the right side, find Messenger and disable it.
Note: not everyone will have Administrative Tools in the Start menu. You need to make it visible under Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (right-click on taskbar –> Properties). The surest way to get to Component Services is to enter %systemroot%\system32\com\comexp.msc into the command line.

When the Coles originally came up with the Quest for Glory series idea, they wanted four games, each having to do with the elements and the seasons. The first one was spring and earth. Trial by Fire was summer and fire. Shadows was autumn and air. And Dragon Fire was winter and water. However, as the first response to your question stated, the Coles realized that there needed to be a bridge for the games. They didn’t feel the hero was ready to just jump into Mordavia and rid it of the Dark One, and anything else that happened to be haunting the valley. So they created Wages of War as a bridge, but didn’t plan on it until after Trial by Fire was completed.

(re: Shadow of Darkness) Yes, unfortunately QG4 was probably the buggiest game Sierra ever released. Which is really a shame because it’s such a fantastic game.
By the by, it’s “chernovy”. 🙂
Anyhow, Error 52 is, among Sierra gamers, the most notorious bug of all time. The reason for it is because QG4 was never meant to be played on computers that can run at the speed they do today. If you have an old computer or laptop that you can play it on, you might be able to get through this scene. I was able to get past this part the first few times I played it, on my old computer. Unfortunately, I can’t win the game anymore.
You might try downloading Turbo, MoSlo, or CPUKiller. If you look up any of those on Google or Yahoo, you’re sure to find a place where you can download them. The purpose of these programs is to slow down your computer to the speed of the older computers that these games were originally written for. Each program can be turned on and off fairly easily, so you could just turn it on for the extent of your game playing.
Unfortunately, I can’t promise that any of these will work. They never did for me. But I know that they have worked for some people so hopefully they’ll work for you.
It is my belief that Sierra put out the greatest computer games of all time, and I’ve been playing them and replaying them since I was 4 years old (when King’s Quest 1 was first released). But sadly, a big handful of them, mostly released from the early to mid 90s, were quite buggy and just won’t work on today’s computers. It’s really disappointing for a person like me who loves to replay old games.

So nice to know that someone else actually knows that the “Inn of Mordavia” theme was actually written by Grieg! I thought I was the only one. I didn’t know it at first…while I’ve always been pretty familiar with classical composers, I didn’t know anything by Grieg other than “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. Then, one day about 6 years ago when I was working as a clerk in a bookstore, “Anitra’s Dance” came over the store’s speakers. (We always had classical music playing). And I said, “Oh my God, it’s the Inn of Mordavia theme!” Of course, none of the other clerks had the slighest idea what I was talking about…

My boyfriend has XP pro and a cable modem. He never gets stuff like this.

I think you probably have some spyware or something that you may have inadvertantly downloaded. Not sure what to do about this but maybe others have advice. A friend of mine with a cable modem downloaded some stuff from Kazaa and now gets pop-up crap like this all the time.

It all depends on the license on both the AGI/SCI software used to create the game, and the license on the actual games…

I still think the best solution (for Sierra, that is) is to sell the games online for like $5-10 each.  They wouldn’t have to spend money on packaging, shipping, and all that other stuff.

(re: re: Bugs) Oops – sorry about the Mac compatibility issue. Can you give me a bit more information about what happens when you try to see the site? I made a bunch of changes that I thought would IMPROVE the site on Macs – but, since I don’t have one, it’s hard to test.
Let me know all you can — I’m travelling now, but will work on it when I get home.
    Thank you,

(re: Manhunter section?) A Manhunter-section would be much appreciated! Personally I think it was a revolutionary game for it’s time, one that deserved to have a sequel in VGA. Can you imagine all the rotten corpses in 256 colours, :-).
A fan-sequel anyone? I know when our own Manhunter darted off into space there was mention of a Manhunter: London on one of the San Francisco Cable Cars. Wouldn’t that be sweet.

(re: re: re: Solution to old copyrights) Actually it was not a version os SCUMM that became freeware, Revolution Software just decided to give their code to makers of ScummVM a group of people who made a collection of interpreters that are capable of emulating some adventure game engines mostly different versions of SCUMM. It was almost impossible to make Beneath a Steel Sky to work on todays computers so Revolution decided to give their code to ScummVM team so that the game could be played again at the same time they also made it available to the public. Despite this I think that Revolution retained their copyright to the characters and the game it is just that it is free to distribute.
So the thing is, the characters and other stuff did not become free of copyright just becouse the game was released free, albeit Revolution is quite open on potential fan games, other companies may not be, so you never know.

The only reason this thought came to mind was because recently a certain version of SCUMM became freeware and so did Benath a Steel Sky. Oh well.

Releasing the studio’s wouldn’t have the games be free unless Sierra said so specificaly.

I know id software gives away the source code for their older engines (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake) but they also specificaly say that Quake is copyrighted by id and that you can’t use any of their artwork, which means you must build the game from scratch.

It would be awome if sierra gave away the engine code for the later KQ, SQ, or LSL games, but they won’t. They would say they woudn’t make any money of adventure games if that decided to re-make the games (silly idea, but true.)

Not sure how it would work out, but there’s lots of websites that offer pay-to-download stuff, so I’m sure they’ve figured out those problems.

(re: re: re: re: re: re: Sierra Classics) Paying to download? One problem with that, what if something goes wrong during the download. Neither side can prove anything happened so you won’t get another download or any refund.

(re: re: re: re: re: Sierra Classics) The bottom line is Sierra is in the business of making money, not creating a loyal fanbase. The business of the former Sierra depended greatly on fan support, but times are drastically different. If they could make money off of these older games, they would release them, but kids these days don’t want to buy outdated software (even if it is better than the current stuff). Why would they want to waste their time handing out games if this would not really benefit their current sales. (Of course, I’m playing devil’s advocate)
It is curious, however, that Sierra still continues to keep message boards for their older games that aren’t still available. This company isn’t stupid. It’s watching to see where trends are going and demand for the games.
What might be a good idea is to offer classics similarly to Apple’s iTunes. Charge a small amount to download a game. On the other hand, it still might not be cost effective (i.e. paying webpeople, server space, etc.), which is something Sierra would research and keep a very close eye on. I wouldn’t mind paying $5-$15 for an older game if that’s what it comes down to.

not a dumb question! yes, the old games had sound… but it was driven by the PC’s internal speaker, rather than a sound card. so i’d expect that the configuration would have to include “internal speaker” or “midi” or something like that.

(re: re: re: re: Sierra Classics)

I don’t keep hold of them because i will “eventually” need them, I actually still play them! They are my fav games of all time. I just would love to get all of them. If they are not sold and are not available for download…….then where are they? It should not be illegal to distribute something that does not exist in today’s market. I think Sierra holds on to the copyrights for their games…..but they should not hold on to the old games themselves. Rather, companies like Epic Megagames let One Must Fall 2097 go free. Yet they still own rights to make a part 2 if they so wish. ID software let out some of their source codes to engines….it does not mean they can’t produce another game from the engines. I’m not asking to abandon the old names…..just allow people to distribute the classic games or put them back on the market. One or the other. Not just let them die.

I think they’re keeping hold of the old sierra games for the same reason we keep our old sierra games, just in case they ever want to use them in the future.

    (re: re: Sierra Classics)

Is that what Sierra seriously told you? If so, why the heck don’t they just let the old copyrights go? They obviously care nothing for the classics! They see nothing to gain from selling them…..so why not declare them freeware? Bah…

(re: re: re: re: Tech Help on Older Games..) I updated my computer to XP and some of the Sierra games I have now do have sound thanks to VDMSound. The ones that still dont have any sound are
    Conquests of Camelot
Quest for Glory 1 (Old Version)
I’m sure if I can get one to work the other will have the exact configuration, I just cant figure out how to do that. Any ideas?
The games run fine, but they dont have any sound.

    Thanks for all the help,
    Elias
