> I was wondering if you could possibly add the option to receive email notification in “digest mode” – i.e., to receive one email message a day containing links to all postings to the site in the last 24 hours?

Also, I am always wondering – why don’t I get email notification for my own messages? I would like to get the notifivation? < I think digest mode is a great idea, also. 🙂 Dave

There is a good working copy on Al Lowe’s site. (At least it works for me)

A different idea is having each person specify in his or hers details page which “sierra” page he would like to be redirected to, and have the email notification just post a link to the preferred site for each user. I am not sure how this will complicate (if at all) the code, as I haven’t got much programming experience (the only language I program in is MATLAB, and that’s for my work…)

Great idea!
I think this works – it forces everyone to use the same URL (which I still am not firm as to what will be – I’m leaning towards sierrafan.com, just because it is shorter). I’ll give it a try.

(re: I need help with Silent Thunder: A-10 Tank Killer) I have this game, but I have not tried to run it under XP. I have had fairly good success running the old sierra games with XP, even the Windows version of KQ6. If I think of it when I get back home in a week or so, I’ll have a try at it.
Another good resource for help with old games is VOGONS (Very Old Games On New Systems) :

(Possible cookie authentication fix.) Ken,
You crack me up with your PS “I hate computers….” on your last message about the cookies – don’t bite the hand that fed you.. ha ha =)
Anyway, in answer to your cookie question, I don’t know if this will work or not (been awhile since I did hardcore web programming), can you not just redirect for example, all your other domains, to one common domain such as
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
and have sierragamers.com write the cookie. That way all email links that go out will be from sierragamers.com and the cookie will be there, so it will keep you logged in and such even if they originally typed say
Link: http://www.sierrasdad.com(http://www.sierrasdad.com)
to get redirected to
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
the message got saved as
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
?
If you are thinking that they would be confused by logging on to
Link: http://www.wizardandprincess.com(http://www.wizardandprincess.com)
and getting a email link from
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
you could set up all your other domains to redirect to a subdomain of sierragamers.com such as
Link: http://www.sierrasdad.com(http://www.sierrasdad.com)
going to sierrasdad.sierragamers.com or
Link: http://www.wizardandprincess(http://www.wizardandprincess)
.com going to wizardandprincess.sierragamers.com that way you can just write the cookie as sierragamers.com and not
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
since the cookie only needs to verify the domain, and not subdomain (so just leave the subdomain off in the cookie) and then it should verify any of those subdomains when they come through to the main cookie sierragamers.com
I hope that made some sense…if not I will try again, or if you don’t think it is even close to what you are trying to do – then I will keep thinking. Hope you get it figured out.

(re: I posted an upgrade) All:
I just discovered an interesting bug .. that I’m not sure how to fix. Perhaps one of you has a clever idea for me.
This website is accessible via LOTS of different URLs. I use
Link: http://www.sierrafan.com(http://www.sierrafan.com)
, but lots of other people access it as wizardandprincess.com, sierrasdad.com, sierragamers.com, and a bunch of other names.
In other words, there are about 10 different URLs that we all use to access this site.
In my code, when I send out a link to the site (as a result of visitors requesting email notification of updates, I use the URL from the person who posts the message. That means that if one of you uses
Link: http://www.wizardandprincess.com(http://www.wizardandprincess.com)
, and I post a new message on
Link: http://www.sierragamers.com(http://www.sierragamers.com)
– your link that is emailed will be a link to a site you’ve never visited.
Argh .. the problem is that the cookie that keeps you logged in is for a site you’ve never been to (or, so the internet thinks).
I’m not sure there is a soluion. I need to think about this one.

Say Hi to Neil for me. I’d say more, but I’m on a 9.6k connection from a hotel room in Prague – and, it’s painful to do anything. Will write more when I get to Seattle in a couple of days.

(Tried the KQ6 intro movie (mac)) Quicktime 6.1, neither files that you uploaded yesterday (the .mov and the zip) worked for me. I didn’t have time to try throwing them through a video converter yet though.

(re: re: KQ6 intro movie (mac))

Okay, I’ll futz with it. On my mac, I can simply add .mov to the file name and then can view it from within Quicktime (which is weird, because mac files generally don’t need extensions). However, if I upload it and then download it again, Quicktime doesn’t like the file anymore. I’ve tried uploading it here as well as to a website of my own, and in both cases have had the same problem. I’ll mess around with the file when I get home to my PC and see if I can figure this out.

(re: re: re: Fair Use; XP; and the Future) I have to admit that I tried to run almost all the old Sierra games (using VDMSound) under XP, and they work fine except for some notoriously annoying “your computer is too fast for this game” bugs.
I really don’t know why all of you are struggling so hard to run the games… VDMSound works fine for me. True, the sound isn’t PERFECT, but there is sound, and the game runs properly.

(re: re: re: Buying Sierra from Vivendi Universal) Personally speaking, I’d have to say that the ‘deal’ should be sweeter towards Valve than Sierra. Sierra are [now] a faceless company with little of its own assets. A great shame but that was ‘progress’ a few years back.

(re: Computer Sound) Hi Ken:
It’s been a long time, hasn’t it? Neil forwarded this link to your sight and I thought I might drop by to say hello!
We had a lot of fun back then, didn’t we. I loved coming to visit you, Al, Guruka Singh, the Coles, and all the others. Remember the Major BBS and its ridiculous filtering? Working for Sierra was a highlight for me and it gave me my first big break with PC Magazine when I wrote a feature article about MIDI.
It sounds like you and Roberta have settled into an adventure filled retirement, but I’m glad to see you re-emerge to talk about old times.

I remember this issue coming up on the adventuregamers forum. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the solution. Adventuregamers has been down all summer so I can’t check the archives for you. But you could try posting your question at their temporary forum… maybe someone who posted to the original thread will read it and have some advice.

I think this is a common problem. In fact, I remember seeing a save game available online somewhere that gets you past this point… but I can’t find it right now. You might try searching for it.

(re: Fair Use; XP; and the Future) Hi there
Take a look at the following site:
Link: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php(http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php)
it is basically a Emulator for DOS under XP.
Good news about it also is:
Quest for Glory I – Sierra (1989)
Works in DOSBox (Tested by 459 in DOSBox version 0.58)
Status – Supported!

(re: re: re: KINGS QUEST 5) Hi there! I recently had a REALLY ANNOYING problem with this one: I played the whole thing through under DOS 7.0 on a Pentium 133 alright with no problems whatsoever, but in the closing sequence it simply hung up with Cassima saying “After all you’ve been through, there MUST be a way!” I totally agreed ;), but there didn’t seem to be…
It didn’t do anything buggy, it just didn’t go on from there (except once, when I heard the wand sound effect once more and it really hung up with fuzzy graphics.) I was really pissed, as you can imagine. I had experienced weird timing problems in LSL3 already, where you have to wait an eternity for the elevator in the hotel to go up. So I tried leaving the computer on for about half an hour. That didn’t help either.
Does anybody have a solution to this one? It’s really frustrating to play through a game and then being deprived of the well-earned extro!!!

(re: re: KINGS QUEST 5) Most people have trouble getting the audio to work in the DOS version of KQ5. You can try one of the updated SoundBlaster drivers from Sierra’s FTP, or the GoSierra patch, but I could never get it to work. The Windows version works well enough (except for out of heap error near the end, but that is a problem with all versions of Windows.)
To get the Windows KQ5 running, all you have to do set your display to 640×480 x25 colors BEFORE you launch the Game. You can do this in the advanced display settings or write a batch file to launch the executable (it must also have the path to the configuration file) and setting the batch file to run in 640x480x256 colors on the compatability tab. The batch file makes it easier to play, as you don’t have to keep changing your display back and forth.

(re: KINGS QUEST 5) i haven’t gotten this one working with XP. but since i have an old win98 machine for the older games, i haven’t tried that hard.
you might try Sierra’s bulletin boards, i’ve seen quite a few threads there about getting the old games working on XP. maybe someone there can help.
