    (re: CC / TSN / INN )

Ha! I remember TSN and INN. That was alot of fun. I was just a teen at the time, so my parents wouldn’t let me spend much time on it.

But I remember having alot of fun on it!

(re: re: re: re: Sierra Football Games) Yeah the raciness for Softporn was more fitting I suppose =)
I am pretty sure Softporn was released in 1981, and the Hi-Res Football was in 1980.
I am VERY sorry to hear that the original color keys got ruined. I hate to see Sierra History destroyed. Which reminds me, did you get my Email from earlier today?

(re: re: re: Sierra Football Games) So I guess it wasn’t until later you got the courage to put something “racy” on the front of a Sierra product, and got your friends (and loved one) in a hottub, and onto a text adventure cover =)
I see now, where the true inspiration for Softporn came from =) Hi-Res Football.
    -Brad
Good point! Actually, somehow, a racy picture seemed more appropriate on a game called “SoftPorn” than on a football game…
You do have me thinking though .. which came first? My memory is that football came out first. As I recall, the game was literally just X’s and O’s on a 2d black/white background.
The Softporn cover was pretty great. I had an original color key (it looks like a negative, but is three sheets of transparent plastic with the different colors) that I had framed – that got ruined. It was spoiled by too much sun hitting it. Darn! Oh well… Those WERE the good old days.

(re: re: re: Sierra Football Games) So while we are on the subject of Gamebox art, what ever happened to the Lolotte-Genesta KQ4 box art that showed up in a interaction magazine (I think) but never into production – are there any other box covers that got yanked last minute that you can remember?

(re: Sierra Football Games) Which football game were you refering to her painting the cover for? Were you talking about Front Page Sports series? Or the old Hi-Res Football? I am assuming you are talking about the old one.
I scanned my old Football instruction book in a minute ago, and am posting it.
Was it a cover for this one?
    -Brad
    Brad:
You are right – it was a cover for Hi-Res Football. I don’t think any copies shipped with the cover that Nova did. We printed them, but then lost the courage to ship them. I had boxes of them in my garage that I think we ultimately just threw away.
I can still see it in my mind; it was a picture of one football player, and one cheerleader. The cheerleader was VERY sexy. I’m not sure what Roberta’s mom was thinking, but I like how she thinks.
Now you know the rest of the story as to why that particular cover isn’t in color. It’s a single color (blue) – because we were in a hurry to get something printed to replace the covers that were thrown away.

(re: re: [greywolfe’s sierra logo]) Great job Adam!
I messed with your logo a bit – I’m not sure I like my work though.
I’ll leave it overnight and then switch to yours…

(re: Travel Website) You are semi-correct! Nova painted the cover to our Football game that we never actually used. She made the cheerleaders way too racy, and I got scared to use the packaging at the last minute. Throwing away 10,000 printed packaging sleeves was a big deal for us in those days – but, I think I made the right decision.
Wow! That’s an interesting story. However, I’m 99% sure that the story about Nova and the Mystery House cover art even comes from official Sierra sources. It may be in Hackers as well. Are you sure about this? I think the picture in question would be this one…

(re: re: A video from the On-Line systems days!) Let me know if you find where to order the video! I’ll order it immediately.
I remember taping this, but never saw the tape they made. I’m VERY curious to see it.
It’s right there on the site! Click on “Duplication Information” at the bottom of the page. The process of ordering it is a little complicated; you have to post them an application form, specifying what you want, why you want it and paying for it in advance. They will then make a copy and send it to you. Transcripts on paper are also available. Even if these archives aren’t intended for private persons using the material at their leisure, I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to obtain copies. Just telling them that you need them for “research” would probably be enough.
And please let us know more if you decide to order it! 🙂

(re: A video from the On-Line systems days!) I believe this video would be well worth the money spent. It would give a great insight into the way the industry worked at that time. Do you even remember doing this thing Ken?

(Travel Website) Wow!!! That travel site (

) is too cool! What a trip you guys were on. Many of those places are definately on my to-do list. It was also fun to see John and Nova. Didn’t she paint the original cover to Mystery House for you? It’s a beautiful picture anyway… They seem to be active people enjoying their retirement years the kind of way you dream you will do yourself. 🙂

(re: re: Sierra video promos) Wow! You definately have to get those videos uploaded sometime. They’re a very important piece of Sierra history that has almost been forgotten. Just knowing what is on those videos would be worth a lot. Besides, the quality of these things will certainly go on decaying over the years, so a digital conversion would be nice.
That reminds me to ask something. Is it possible that Sierra still has some kind of archive with all the old stuff like this still in good condition? Or is that something that a software company wouldn’t be bothered with? How was it in the old days?

(re: Little mistake in Sq6) As one of the programmers of Space Quest 6, I think it’s a safe bet for me to say that Josh and Scott didn’t play SQ5. SQ5 was done at Dynamix by a non-Oakhurst crew. There were some sore feelings.

(re: re: re: Anti Bush Message) Simon:
No problem. Both Roberta and I love politics and political discussion. I’m a bit of a news junky. The first couple of hours for me every day are spent reading the various news sources on the internet. A typical morning: The NY Times, Seattle Times, CNN, Fox News, Free Republic, Drudge Report, Wall St Journal, etc.
On this trip, we visited lots of different countries (France, UK, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany). We saw almost no anti-american sentiment anywhere. Generally, most people seemed to be doing everything they could to make us feel welcome. Tourism is down everywhere, especially in France where american tourism is down 70%! (overall tourism was down 10%)
There were really no high-points from the trip to talk about. It was my first trip to eastern europe. I liked it better than I thought I would. The Danube was awesome. Roberta and I want to go back and bicycle it.
    -Ken W
PS Someone reminded me earlier today of a website I did to commemorate a trip Roberta and I did last year. I had forgotten about it, but it’s kind of fun. Check it out at:

I’m all for political debate, but I have public beta 1 of my first game in the pipeline for delivery tomorrow 6pm eastern, so I’m kind of… out of time to argue.

I’m sure I can debate next week though, if someone will remind me.

(re: re: Anti Bush Message) Sorry, Ken!
My post was supposed to be a joke alluding to Chris’ statement “Hopefully you don’t run into much Anti-American sentiment in your travels abroad.” It wasn’t supposed to be a political statement. And it’s definitely not my opinion (although I don’t think Bush himself stands for democracy, freedom of speech or intellectual debate), it’s too silly for that. The message was “America <> Bush”, that’s all. I see now that my way to express this, which was supposed to be sarcastic, not really serious, was very inconsiderate and misunderstandings should’ve been forseeable.
My opinion is that one can only judge the individual by the way he or she influences others (which is of course always very difficult because, especially in our days with our advanced ways of communication, there are a lot of mutual influences everywhere.)
I hope I made a point this time. I do agree with practically everything you have said on the topic. And I do have great respect for what you’ve done in Coarsegold and for still playing a very active part in the gamer’s community. I also like the idea of politics.talkspot.com, although I know far too little about most issues of global relevance to valuably contribute.
Hope I didn’t spoil your good humour and good luck with your future projects!

    (re: Anti Bush Message) All:
I did not delete Simon’s message, even though it had nothing to do with Sierra – because I’m always (or, at least almost always) anti censorship.
    That said…
I am not endorsing it. The message reflects the opinion of the person who posted the message, and I do believe that people have a right to express their opinion.
    And, that said…
I do like political debate (although preferably not here). I set up another site (politics.talkspot.com) – if people want to debate politics there.
    And, having said all that…
I define debate as intellectual discussion. Simply saying “I hate Bush” or “I love Bush” doesn’t really accomplish much. Neither does picking on someone for the clothes they wear, or how they look. I believe we move forward when you try to understand all sides of an issue. Obviously, the person who posted the “anti Bush” message believes that President Bush is not doing a good job as President. Why? In what area? It isn’t enough to respond that we shouldn’t be in Iraq. Tell me what we were trying to accomplish there, and how it could have been accomplished in some other way – and, then you have an intelligent debate. However, my preference is that you say all this on the political board (politics.talkspot.com) – not here. This board should try to stay Sierra-focused.
    -Ken W
PS The political board is just getting started. If it attracts a lot of interest, I’ll enhance it. If not, I’ll shut it down. Is there an interest? Got me.
