Participant(re: re: Soundtracks)
I have the GK2 soundtrack that came on the extra disc in the Gabriel Knight Mysteries Collection, and I have already ripped it to MP3s. Should I upload them?

Participant(re: re: re: re: Flash Test – Ignore) I’ll leave the flash thing up for ya.. I just wanted to see what types of stuff you could Embed. I am starting to understand I think what you are trying to acomplish with this software you are writing for Web management.

Do me a favor and don’t delete the flash test. I’m doing a demo for some “corporate types” next week, and would like it there to show that Flash animations are possible.

Participant(re: Brad: even more stuff for the DVD!) Absolutely, no problem running those out to a video stream. I say let’s do it. I’ll download them tonight.

Participant(re: re: Bugs) this is more of a nuisance than a bug…It appears that if you hit the refresh button from within anywhere on this site you will taken back to the welcome (home) screen. i discovered the problem while trying to refresh the “Display New Messages” page.
I had it the other way … and, then changed it to be like this. From inside the code, I can’t tell the difference between a “refresh” and leaving the site (and returning). It was disconcerting to return to the site and find it on a page other than the home page.
I’ll think about what a compromise might be.

PS You can always right-click on the page and choose refreshUnknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Sierra to become a part of NBC?) Fox Interactive owned by NBC? That’s a little ironic.
This makes some sense, considering it was a Vivendi subsidiary that published the Law & Order game (at least, I think it was… for awhile Amazon mistakenly listed Sierra as the publisher…)

Participant(re: Soundtracks) I was a programmer on GK1, and I seem to remember having a cd with the sound track on it. Lemme go through my archives and see if I can find it…

Participant(re: Soundtracks)
okay, i’m having a little trouble. maybe someone who’s not MP3 challenged can help me out.
when i insert my GK soundtrack, i can’t see any of the music tracks — only data files that apparently go with the interactive part of the disk. i can play the CD, but when i try to convert the tracks to MP3, no tracks are listed for the CD. (i have tried using both Windows Media Player, and a jukebox utility that came pre-installed on my PC.)
i don’t have the GK Mysteries installed on my computer right now (and wasn’t actually able to use the interactive features of the CD, i suspect because I haven’t installed something that needs to be installed), but still, if I can play the tracks, I expected I’d also be able to see them.
any ideas?

“ps what’s the story with MP3s these days? are they legal… it’s just file sharing that’s illegal?”
There’s a legal complication with mp3’s. If any developer uses them in a product, they have to pay a licensing fee. See
http://www.mp3licensing.com
Ogg Vorbis was developed to overcome this hurdle, and it should work just fine. Players like Windows Media Player might not support it by default, but you can probably easily get a codec for it (certainly there are other media players out there that do support ogg).
I seriously doubt that mp3 sound quality is more superior to that of ogg’s.
Personally, either will work for me, but I think ogg is the way to go. You could potentially put an ogg-compatible free media player on whatever CD you develop for Windows. Linux media players almost always have ogg support, so you need not worry about them. I’m not sure if Mac players typically support them (Frans?).
As for video format, I’m with Frans – please use more widely accepted formats like Mpeg/DivX to accomodate us non-Windows users.
Finally, I’d appreciate it if whoever is making the CD’s also provide them in non-DVD format (I don’t have a DVD player). If that means more CD’s for you to ship, I’ll gladly pay a (reasonable) amount extra for it.
Thanks

Participant(re: re: Ken Williams Uncovered) Heheeh,
They were in the Holiday 95 Issue of Interaction.. an article about you buying up a bunch of companies who were producing software that you liked, and integrated it with Sierra’s product line. The only thing I modified was taking out some text/objects that were overlapping over your cartoon ego, and drawing the rest back in. And of course I modified the last one of you at your desk, to welcome the folks here – thought maybe you could use it for your home page, if you ever got a itch to switch things up.

Participant(re: Ken Williams Uncovered) Wow!!!!
Cool pictures! Where did you get these? Were they in InterAction, or did you draw them?

Participant(re: Soundtracks)
OGG is a good format but still not widely used or supported. Yes it is used and supported but I bet you, even with the advantages it offers, more people will prefer MP3. 128 MP3 ought to be high enough quality.

Participant(re: re: Interaction Magazine List) Thanks for posting that list Sean! Think you are right on the 10th Anniv. Issue, and as far as your cover delima for the Holiday 1998, I think you do indeed have an alternate version. If I recall I think it was the difference between getting it in the mail, and picking it up as a freebie at say CompUSA or buying it at B&N… I can’t quite remember. Herer is a scan of my Holiday 1998 Cover. I think you’ll find that yours has the same “stories” listed on the cover. If you can scan and post yours too that would be great.

Participant(re: Interaction Magazine List) I have only one that was not on Brad’s list, but I thougth I would post all of them anyway. I’m guessing that there was not a Vol 2 No 3 and 4 and possibly no other Vol 3s? I think that they may have just printed the 10th Anniversary Issue wrong and it should have been Vol 3 No 2 (if you look at the end of the Cristy Marx magazine it talks about the 10th Annerversary as coming next). If I can help out in any way with getting this project together just let me know. If I can take some of the scanning off of anyones shoulders just shoot me a message.

Participant(re: re: re: Interaction Magazine List)
I still own some older interaction magazines. Some that were at the end of ‘classic’ sierra too. Don’t really know why I kept them…..maybe just fond memories..

Participant(re: re: Soundtracks)
Would it be possible to post them in Ogg-format instead? It gives better sound quality at lower bitrates (sounds great when encoding with quality setting 0.5)

Participant(re: Interaction Magazine List) Brandon and Frans,
Here is my list of Sierra magzines. Brandon, it looks like your Spring and Fall of 97 are ones that I “need” to work towards making a complete collection. Once you lock down a formula for scanning/compressing/archiving the magazines, I will follow your lead, and begin scanning my copies as well for the archives. If you, or anyone else would like to sell/trade any Sierra Pulications with me please let your offers be known – I’m anxious to fill in the holes (about 15 I guesstimate) Ken can you help us with the history of the newsletter? Particularly around the 1981 Time Period – I know there is a newsletter with Cranston Manor on Front, and I have no idea what falls before that, and between the SN Vol 1 No 2 that I have – was the Cranston Manor Vol 1 No 1?
I am also assuming that there is a Vol 1 No 3, and am not quite sure about Vol 2 No 3 and No 4, since we go from Spring 1989 to Autumn 1989 without a summer. Another question – There are two Volume 3 No 1 magazines… they have different content in them, which makes them different than Holiday 95 and 96 which have the same content just alternate covers – I can’t remember why this was – was one a mailed copy and the other the ones that appeared in the magazine rack? It would be great if everyone could check their collections against what I have here, and note any other Alternate covers, so we can be sure to scan those as well. I want to piece together a complete computer list, that is historcially correct, so any acurate information that can be given would be awesome.
As a side note – I have many of the original mailings that Sierra had, promoting special offers and such back in the day. They are kinda fun to look at, and I plan on scanning those as well, should there be an interest for that in the community.

That low? I wanted that pack sooooooooooo much! I just couldn’t afford it then (bargin bins are my friends)!

Participant(re: re: How Limited was ‘Limited’ (Roberta’s Anthology)?) Ken, sorry about the badly worded question! The question was indeed how many copies of the Roberta Williams Anthlogy were sold. Thanks for the answer.
Hey, that’s not many 🙁 A surprise given what was in the box! I don’t even remember it being on a shelf (in the local games stores) although I think I was less into games for that period of my life?!
Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: How Limited was ‘Limited’ (Roberta’s Anthology)?) I’m not sure I understand the question…
Do you many how many anthologies did we do? I think we did one for all the series; Kings Quest Anthology, Larry Anthology, Quest For Glory Anthology, etc.
I think Roberta’s was the only “author” anthology we did. It didn’t sell that well. I don’t remember why… My guess would be that we sold somewhere between 25,000 and 100,000

Participant(re: Quest For Glory V Soundtrack) thanks for the mp3’s … really great quality!
i’ve always thought the Phantasmagoria opening “tone” was really cool…ya know, that deep descending bass .. don’t know if i’ve ever heard sound that deep.

Participant(re: re: Sierra video promos)
I just read (i forget where) but I belive anything before 1928 can’t be copywrited. However, even though classical music is “free”, the person who arranged the song (if changed from the origional) can charge for his copywrited arrangement. There is some sites out there that give away royality free video/audio though.

Participant(re: re: Soundtracks) woohoo! thanks!
i’ll try to get some GK stuff up on monday.
