ParticipantI believe Zeliard (and also the sequel to Thexder) were Game Arts games, as well. Thexder was one of the first computer games I ever purchased. (Sierra’s 3-D Helicopter Simulator was also one of my other first games… I bought both around the same time.). Although I preferred the adventure game titles, Thexder was a very fun game with great graphics and music. Maybe some day I’ll get it running again and try to finish it. It was a bit challenging, and I don’t recall it having the ability to save your progress.

ParticipantI agree. I have been visiting the site now for several years, just to read messages in the forums. For the other parts are pretty much dead, I am sorry to say. Perhaps the webmaster(s) need some extra assistance, I am sure some members will volunteer to supply the other members and visitors with some minimal information, as was suggested. At least the link to submit “cool sierra links” is no longer broken after the previous posting. But it is indeed strange to see that sites that were suggested, like the extensive site about Phantasmagoria, weren’t added already, or the Mosely site for instance (http://mosely.xoompages.com). But then, a least a small change was made now … I myself fear that many of us may have died before all the proposed “big projects” are completed. In the mean time it would be nice to enjoy some smaller additions.

ParticipantDrop me an email (renee.blaine@hotmail.com) and I’ll send you what I have- which is quite a lot, but I can’t remember where all of it came from.

ParticipantI agree!

ParticipantThe ‘Tenth Anniversary’ booklet that came with games like King’s Quest had a page and a half dedicated to ‘A Short History of Sierra and Japanese Games’.
It states: By the time Sierra personnel got their first look at Silpheed, the Game Arts people and Sierra had cemented thier friendship. Sierra had hired not only Ed Nagano (Ken’s shopping companion on his first Japan trip) as a Sierra U.S. Ambassador for Japan, but also a Japanese programmer, Mickie Lee, for Sierra’s U.S. offices.’
‘Silpheed, which Ken licensed, was eventually released in April of 1989 for the U.S. market.’

ParticipantOur relationship with Game-Arts was just a licensing deal. The hope was that they would help us establish our games in the Japan market, and we would help them in the US.
Perhaps someone here can refresh my memory, but I think the only Game Arts’ games we published were Thexder and Silpheed. Both were successful, although neither was a huge hit.
I don’t remember why we stopped publishing their products. My recollection is that everything we did in Japan failed. There wasn’t a PC Compatible computer that was doing well in Japan, except the NEC PC-9801, which really wasn’t very compatible, and wasn’t really used as a game machine. We weren’t in the video game business, and ultimately closed our office in Tokyo, after losing a fair amount of money there.

ParticipantCompletely understood. The relevant part of the question actually is no longer relevant- I wrote a lot of fanfiction in various genres a while back trying to break a writer’s block. Since then I’ve gone pro, and I had been toying with the idea of putting my one Phant fanfic up on my personal site as a promotional sample- this is how I write, if you like it, here’s where you can get my original fiction- but while I was away for a bit I started rewriting that piece into a different story entirely- and it no longer qualifies even remotely as fanfiction, lol. Sorry. >.< I actually do that quite often- but who says cannibalism is a bad thing?
However, if you ever do consider starting a book line based on the Phantasmagoria concept- I call dibs on one! Thanks for taking the time to answer my silly and futile question.
Renee.

ParticipantThe idea of making a dvd is great of course. Yet I do believe it would be better as some of the stuff would be uploaded here. This site can be more than a community where where fans discuss Sierra topics, but also where they can find some (basic) info. An example are the “Cool Sierra links.” Other examples are a list of Sierra games or covers of Sierra games, as was mentioned in the other thread. A reason to do so is that some people who are looking for information won’t have dvd, and propably people who do have the dvd (when it is ready) still want to check things here, for it is more easily that loading a dvd. Moreover, it would attract new visitors.
Btw, as far as the “Cool sierra links” is concerned, the link “to submit and discuss links here” doesn’t work. Perhaps this is the reason it is a bit outdated. Below a few links that I have saved in my favorites, but there are many more.

ParticipantWhy is it always bad news from the old Sierra camp? I see many games, i.e. Syberia II, etc, that seem to be at least successful enough to be sold at Best Buy and warrant sequels, why can we not get a Space Quest game or King’s Quest game made? And yes I do know about the fan-made games, but you know what I mean!

ParticipantA few things came up in this thread, and in the Sierra YouTube thread. I’ll address both here.
The project is still being worked on. As to why we chose originally to not release each one as they were being done, the reason is that we wanted to make a nice and proper collection that you could have in a DVD case on your shelf, not just something you download to your hard drive. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to any of the master data in this case, as this project is being worked on by another party. It is something I am attempting to get back on track.
As for the general status of the archives, as brought up in the YouTube thread… Things such as scans of the boxes, etc., are all being worked on, as well as a ton of behind the scenes stuff. It is being worked on by only a small number of people because we are doing things such as having many things professionally drum scanned, as well as creating ridiculously high master copy scans of things. Plus, we all have full-time jobs, and are working on the master archiving only in our free time.
It is a trade-off between either having stuff appear on this website now, or doing the job properly and creating a really high quality product in the end. I think if there are people who want to scan things and post them here on this website, by all means, go ahead. I’ll do my best to stay in touch with what’s happening here, and help with organizing anything that is submitted.

ParticipantWell, keep up the great work. =)
I’m sure a lot of people are thinking the same as well.

ParticipantThe functionality is currently pretty much as you see in the videos. I am working right now on getting Conferences implemented on the server. I want to have that working at least before I let other people start logging in.
Chat in the clubhouse waiting room is strictly one-to-one, so I need to get conferences running before any number of people will be able to get online and interact in any real way. I got the client to successfully enter a conference room today, so things are coming along nicely on that front.

Participanti was just browing gamestop.com and i noticed they still had it planned to release in may. but im sure they just don’t know it’s not coming out yet.
also noteworthy, some of the new Sierra Collections that were just released are supposedly there for download now. i think that is weird, but that’s what it says. i saw larry and space quest, but didn’t see kings quest oddly enough.

ParticipantHi everyone!
I have this request (not sure, though, if this is the right place to post it): Anyway, would someone who has it, create and share a CD image of (either/any) Family Demonstration CDs? Most individual demos I have found so far are from ‘Version 2.0, 8/1/93’.

ParticipantI decided to replay King’s Quest VI over the weekend. I managed to get the Windows version working in DosBox. It worked almost flawlessly except for some problems with the midi music getting stuck on a note while the rest of the music would continue to play fine, and there were a few other minor sound quirks. I thought I remembered that you could have both text and speech at once, but I guess I was wrong. I’d like to see a patch that enables text and speech in games that don’t already have it.

ParticipantAl Lowe is no longer working on Sam Suede.
I’m not certain whether or not the project is still going.
As to whether or not he will work on it again, if they do get the project restarted, I would be surprised — but, it is not outside the realm of possibility.

ParticipantHas anyone heard from Al Lowe recently regarding the fate of Sam Suede? Except for archived news stories, pretty much all mention of Al Lowe has been removed from the IBase Entertainment website (http://www.ibaseentertainment.com/), where he used to figure so prominently in their advertising campaign. If work on Sam Suede does resume in the future, will Al Lowe be involved? I sure hope so!! If anyone has any info, please share.

ParticipantGlad to read you like to see the material posted on this site as well – and preferably in a higher resolution 😉

ParticipantWhy post Sierra game-related stuff to YouTube? Because YouTube has a MUCH, MUCH bigger audience. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t also like to see material posted on this site as well. The idea here is to share the material with as many Sierra fans and with as wide an audience as possible, right?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantBut why recommend sharing the Sierra videos on YouTube? I think this site is the place where they should be uploaded (e.g. in The Sierra Archives). If there’s a bandwidth/financial problem (though it is incredibly cheap nowadays) I am sure many of us are willing to contribute. I am wondering too why there’s hardly anything in these Sierra Archives. I understand that the InterAction project is a big project that takes a lot of time to finish (though I think it would have been better to publish the finished scans one by one), but I would have expected that by now at least a complete list of Sierra games would have been published, with scans of the covers of the boxes. (But perhaps I have missed some threads about this).
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantI’m looking forward to it as well. I used to read the magazines and catalogs to death. I still have mine, but they’re all falling apart and in really bad condition.

ParticipantAwesome Work!!
It was amazing to see the old INN GUI again after all of these years… Your efforts I am sure are appreciated by everyone. =) I know they are by me.
No comments here, but how’s the functionality?
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantGreat job, I really enjoyed it!! Though it’s true of course what “collector” says in the previous posting, it is already very interesting, especially for those who only heard about TSN/INN. I think at least one of the demos you made for YouTube should be included inthe Sierra Archives at this site, as is shows a piece of Sierra history.
