(re: re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) I am really sorry to admit this, but from what we know, Al is NOT involved in any way, in fact me probably doesn’t even know, the game is being developed, since he is on vacation for another week or two. Of course we will be trying to get further details and more precise information, but basically all we can do is wait and see, what they make out of Larry….

(re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) Any word on the involvement of Al? Also, if its being released on consoles, I hope that doesn’t have an effect on some of those nice easter eggs from the earlier games.

(re: re: re: re: Games for the TI 99) Hi Ken!
Sorry for the confusion, the SMS is the “Sega Master System”, Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s original system, the NES.
I think I remember in an old interview you joked about how awful the cartridge business had been. I had no idea how terrible indeed!!
Nintendo found that out the hard way with the Nintendo 64, expensive medium, horrible storage space, and essentially they were trying to control developers with a format….
I will post up some nice pics of the Sega Master System game and hopefully some screenshots of the actual game. This version of Kq1 is VASTLY redone for the Sega system!
Can you remember ever dealing with Parker Borthers or Sega around 1989? That’s the copyright date on the box.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Yes, you are correct. King’s Quest 1 was released in a version for the Sega Master System by Parker Brothers. In 1989 I think. The game has entirely redrawn tile-based graphics and naturally no text interface. The story is intact though.

(re: re: Big Day Coming!!!! (again!)) Ken. It’s an amazing experience to see the Sierra games nostalgia sweeping through many of us. There was always that anticipation of a new game introduction, and the inevitable letdown when the game was finished. That is, until another new game arrived and the cycle started all over again. Many thanks for some fun times.

Hi again collector.  I downloaded the dosbox program from your link and extracted the files.  Do you know what I should do next?  I have to admit to being somewhat confused.  Thanks.  Russ

(re: re: Big Day Coming!!!! (again!)) yeah… the “old” Sierra is loved by many!
yet, many people still do not know of this website
with spearding the link in many Sierra’s quests fan-sites, as well as search engines, I believe members will go as high as the sky

(re: re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) The garbled text is a problem that some modern graphics cards have with AGI games. You can fix this by running the game with DOSBox or a third party AGI Interpreter such as NAGI or SARIEN.

I could be wrong about this, but I believe the SMS spoken of is the Sega Master System: the 8-bit system Sega had out to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System.

(re: re: re: Games for the TI 99) I wonder if Ken can verify this, but I read on some site long ago that only 900 copies of King’s Quest V were made for the NES, and like 700 of the Kq1 for the Sega. Sounds wrong to me, do you have any recollections Ken? Also, did Parker Brothers do the port of Kq1 for SMS??
I have no idea how many of each type of cartridge we made. My guess is that we took the minimum order quantity, which would have been around 25,000 cartridges – at around $15-20 EACH! It’s possible the numbers you have represent how many we sold, not how many we bought. Argh….
I have no idea what an SMS is. Is this what they called carts for the TI-99? You have me stumped….

PS I have a MAJOR upgrade to the software for this website I’ve been working on. My guess is that I’ll post it sometime in the next week. Don’t be surprised if we go through a couple of days of “flakiness” as I stabilize the new code. I think you’ll like it….

(re: re: re: Games for the TI 99) in general, the easiest (and free!) way to take a screenshot is to use the print screen button on your keyboard, and paste into Paint or some other graphics program (i use Photoshop, but i’m sure there are some free programs available for download that let you save .gifs and .jpgs). i don’t know how you’d take a screenshot from a console… unless you did it in windows using an emulator like you said.

(re: re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) too bad. 🙁 good luck finding a larry collection. this is one of the harder ones to find because not many copies were sold in the first place.
no ideas for the space quest games, and i don’t have those so i can’t mess with them for you.

(re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) Hi Emily. Yes I did try running and installing from the dos (command) prompt. Once I had the A: prompt I tried running from the disk, and also installing to the hard drive from the disk. All efforts resulted in the game asking for the original disk. When I typed in the drive letter that contained it, nothing happend. I’m pretty well convinced that this little 3 1/2″ disk is corrupted. It is, after all, 15 years old. I’m currently haunting Ebay to try and get the Larry collection on CD. I have the Space Quest, Police Quest and Quest for Glory collections on CD, and want to add Larry and King’s Quest. However, I just emailed Al Lowe because I have still another problem. The Space Quest EGA versions from cd show up fine as far as graphics, but the text boxes are garbled and unreadable, so of course, this makes the games unplayable. If you hear of anyone who has had this problem and has fixed it, I’d certainly appreciate hearing about it. I think it may be a problem with the interpretor on my Sony Vaio, because apparently people have played these same games from CD on other XP machines without this problem. Anyway, thanks for the help. Have a good evening.

(re: re: Games for the TI 99) Hey emily!
I will do my best to get those screenshots soon. Any ideas what would be the “Best cheapest” way of getting screenshots?
Also, I ordered a flatbed scanner today, so I will be posting some awesome pics of my many Sierra Cartridge games, as well as varoius scans of my massive Sierra collection! 🙂
    Thanks
    Ryan
P.S. You may be able to find an emulator for the SMS, and find the rom to play for yourself!!

(re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform)

hmm. i don’t think i’ll be able to help, since my game is on a CD and not a 3.5 disk.

however, i have run other old sierra games from disks. this sounds a little weird because those games were (i think) too old to have any kind of copy protection on the disk. in other words, having an “original disk” wasn’t a requirement back then… which is why the manuals contained copy protection.

have you tried running the install from a dos prompt? XP only has dos emulation but it might still work. you can get to the dos prompt through your start menu somehow… it might be in Accessories or System Tools. a little dos window will open up.

first change the dos prompt to a:\ (it’ll probably start out as c:\ … if it has something after it, such as c:\windows, type “cd..” without the quotes until you have c:\ as your prompt. then type “a:\” without the quotes and you should have an a:\ prompt.)

when you have an a:\ prompt, type “install.bat” (or whatever the name of the install program is) — you might actually have to type “run install.bat”, i’m not sure. (again, no quotes on either of those.)

(re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform)

Hi collector.  I did try to run it from the hard drive with no luck.  This is an original 3 1/2 Larry 1 disk, and I’m beginning to suspect there is a corrupted file since you folks have been able to make it run.  I used the VDMS to successfully run the Space Quest collection games on the same laptop, but I did have a problem with Space Quest 2, in that the text comes up garbled even though the graphics are fine.  Quite honestly, I don’t know what to do about that either.

(re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform)

Hi Emily.  I tried runnign the game directly from the 3 1/2″ disk.  When it asked for the original disk, which was already in the A drive, I pressed Enter, but nothing happened.  I then did the isntallh and put it on the hard drive.  it again asked for the original disk, but again did nothing when I hit Enter.  I then copied the entire disk into a folder on the hard drive and tried to run it from there.  Same problem.  I then tried the install from that folder, got the message for the origianl disk, and had the same problem.  My girl friend and I both have Sony Vaio laptops running XP.  When I originally tried to install it to the hard drive on her machine, I did see one case where it said ‘0 file copied’. It copied everyhting over, except one file, so I assumed the disk had a corrupted file as you said.   However, I then did the same thing on my Sony, and did not get that error message, but the result was the same, namely, not being able to play the game.  Very frustrating to say the least.

There shouldn’t be any problem with running this on XP. You might have a corrupted file. Can you copy all the files to your hard drive? The AGI version doesn’t really need to be installed, just run it from the hard drive.

    (re: re: Heart of China)

“VOLUME.000” is an install file, I believe that it is an archive of the other game files (HOC.EXE, VOLUME.RMF, TANK.TBL, etc.) Anyway, I got the file from someone on the Quest Studios board. Of note, the Dynamix games MUST be installed from pure DOS, the install will not work from a DOS box in Windows, 98 or XP. I think it must be because of copy protection. The game runs fine in Windows, even XP.

(re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) can you explain what you’ve tried so far, and what the result was? are you able to install the game? do you get any error messages when you try to run it?
i don’t have the original larry on floppies but i have one of the collections. i can try to help you install it on XP but it would help first to know what you’ve tried and where you’re stuck. (i assume when you say “original,” you mean you’re trying to install the AGI (text) version?)
