Participant(even more LSL 8 – Confirmation!) After having revieved a second confirmation from an official source, basically telling us, what we already knew, that is that Larry 8 is in development and will be released in the fall of 2004, a new hint has reached us. The Computer Games Magazine (what a name!) has hinted that in the november issue Larry’s “new adventure will be revealed”.
Though the name Larry is not expressively mentioned, we all can imagine who “the greatest loser in the historey of computer games” could be, espexcially in combination with a Martini glass!!!
So, watch out for the november issue, and visit

Participant(re: re: re: re: re: Interaction+ Project (Scanner Update)) Guys, I’ve been following this with anticipation! I’ve nothing to add to the collection but I’d love a own CD full of the great stuff from Sierra of old. I could do a menu’ing system if ya like?! HTML/code whatever takes your fancy!
I’ll also offer myself as a UK distributor if the position is needed & free!?! That’ll cut down postage costs for us in old Blighty! I can make CDs and DVDs and can print CD labels and inserts in lovely colour.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(Sierra Magazines that we still need. (Around 10)) Fellow historians :
Below is a list of the magazines either I do not have, or have not found anyone who has them – we need an APB put out on these. Ken is going to be our best source I believe. I have a few old Sierra contacts that I can check with, but I am not holding my breath. This list is not absolute either. I have no clue/evidence of what existed between 1981-1987, and if some of the issues that I have listed really exist or not – with changing of the name of the magazine and such, and the numbering/date systems. Some have a question mark by them, but in reality all of them should have a question mark by them until someone actually spots one.
Let the hunt begin! I want this archiving project to be complete!

Participant(re: re: re: re: Interaction+ Project (Scanner Update)) Ken,
I am all for making the CD’s for everyone, I called Kinkos a few weeks ago, when you first suggested picking up the bill for it – the person that does archiving at Kinko’s was not in at the time, but the lady that told me to call back when she was going to be back in told me, that there was a minimum of $250 for that type of custom work.
Personally I do not think that a third party company without an interest in Sierra’s history is going to take the care of making sure they are preserved correctly (i.e. color correction, scratch/blemish removal/ etc etc) than fans on this board like Brandon Klassen, and myself just to name two of the many on here.
I think the hardest part, is going to be able to round up those missing issues – I want to make this disc, but I want to make it complete – I am hoping that you Ken, are going to have the issues that we are missing (hopefully). Have you been able to find any of the older ones, and answer the questions we’ve had – also on the same note – any luck on rounding up some videos that I can start archiving – that project is a high priority on my list. Have you submitted anything to the Smithsonian Institute about getting copies of that interview without timecode burned in? Anything I can do to help you expidite that that you can think of?
I’ll give Kinko’s a ring again, and see what exact price I can get, and try to judge their quality level – according to the lady I spoke with back when, that location in Dallas here was the only location that did archiving locally, the next closest place as Oklahoma.
Just lemme know Ken, thanks.

Participant(re: re: re: Interaction+ Project (Scanner Update)) My suggestion:
Take the copies of InterAction to Kinkos, and get an estimate for what it would cost to scan the magazine. My guess is that it won’t be cheap – but, I’ll consider paying it. Let me know the estimated cost per issue, and I’ll make a decision.
Here’s my favorite option:
We scan in such a way that all of the scanned images fit on one or two CDs
Someone on this site puts together a menu of some sort for the CD
Then: Someone offers the CD for sale to anyone who wants to pay $10-20 via paypal (uncluding the shipping)
This would give someone a chance to make a few bucks – and, give all of us a CD of the old magazines at a reasonable cost.
Is there an entrepreneuer out there somewhere?

Lori mentioned some of the original QFG5 voice actors were replaced… I happen to own some .WAV files of the original voices.Unknown,Unknown

Did anyone else see Von Glower on ER last night? He didn’t have a very big part and sadly was killed. I saw the his name in the beginning credits and was hoping it was the same Peter Lucas and it was. Also saw Mrs.Smith (Judith Drake) in a jiffy lube commercial a few days ago. I wonder if she did a tarot card reading for them!

I’m not arguing your point or anything but … I thought QG3 was an awesome game actually. I’d probably say that it was my favorite. Maybe I just have the most memories from playing that game, I don’t know.

; available options: 0, 1
; default option: 0
full_screen=0
and change “full_screen=0” to “full_screen=1”Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) Regardless of who is making the game we have to realize that at some point the original designers wont be around anymore. Just because he/she develops the game doesnt really mean that it will be a good game, (QFG3 for example was desgined by the Coles, but was clearly the worst in the series), the new designer could be someone that had grown up with the series.
Imagine if one of us was asked to design the game or to give feedback and ideas to be put in the game. Even though having Al in the series would be an added plus, we must not look down on the project just yet. Let the game come out and we can judge then. At least they are making the game.

Participant(re: re: New Instances of Multipile Email Messages) Wow, strange…
Perhaps you simply have some of us more than once on the automatic mailing list? I assume that you have that function automated (otherwise you’d probably go batty trying to keep up with everything! =D), so I’d guess it’s possible; at least, it’s the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Participant(re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) This news about a possible LSL8 is interesting, but I still haven’t made up my mind if I like it or not.
On the plus side, this is a sign that Sierra hasn’t completely forgot about its past and may be willing to back up an adventure game again. It’s a big deal if Vivendi publishes a pure adventure and it sells well.
That they’re aiming for consoles is logical, and we have reached the point where adventure games can actually be very good on consoles. Every new console adventure will introduce the genre to new players, and what the adventure genre needs above all is more fans, so the publishers dares to put their money in adventure games again.
Then again, we don’t know what this new game is going to be about. For all we know, it could be an action shooter or an RPG, although it doesn’t seem very probable.
As for Al not being involved, this is a major setback. The series is so tightly connected to Al that I cannot imagine a Larry game without his involvement. If they go ahead and make LSL8 without Al, it will have to be extremely good if I’m going to buy it. If it’s a bad game and Al wasn’t involved, people are going to trash it so completely that Sierra won’t know what hit them. And I see this situation as a clear possibility.
However, if the game is axed by the fans, how likely is Sierra to make any more adventure games like it? It’s a delicate situation. In my opinion, there is nothing connecting Sierra today to the company that made those classic adventure games except for the name. We have been disappointed time and time again by the new Sierra. And I won’t hope for much this time either, out of fear of another disappointment. Remember that LSL8 was already cancelled once, and Space Quest 7 twice. In such an early development stage as this it’s still in the air if LSL8 is going to be a reality this time.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(LSL 8 & Console gaming) Morgan makes some good points about the transition a game makes going from a PC to a console system, but its not always bad. Especially lately with the power that most of the consoles have the game shouldnt change that much. Examples of this are evident in games like: Hitman 2, Mafia, Deus Ex, the games played the same on all the systems, but the graphics took a little hit, and the controls had to be changed a bit. And as for the game being toned-down I dont think that will happen, you can see that games are becoming more and more violent and realistic, GTA 3 and GTA 3 Vice City, to name a few have pushed the envelope so we arent stuck playing Mario Kart the rest of our lives.
In general if Sierra does publish Larry on the consoles it would be a huge step in bringing back some of our favorite games. Because Larry and whatever other series they decide to bring back will have a wider fan base. In whatever form Larry comes in, as long as its developed well, we should welcome it. Because we all know (as mush as we hate to say it) the traditional Adventure game is dead.

I’ll look at the code tonight to see how this could occur.
Has anyone else received multiple copies of the email notifications? It can’t be the new code – I still haven’t uploaded it – although, I have hopes to upload it this weekend.

Participant(re: re: re: re: re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) Collector. My many thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Dosbox wouldn’t seem to work for me, but I did what you said with NAGI and it worked like a charm. And the smaller box isn’t a problem on my 19″ monitor. Many thanks again.

Participant(re: re: re: re: re: Leisure-Suit Larry on XP platform) DOSBox is not that obvious on how to use it, but a simple way is to drag a shortcut from “dosbox.exe” to your desktop and drag and drop your game’s executable onto this shortcut. NAGI is very easy to use. You just move your AGI game folders to inside the NAGI folder and launch NAGI. you will then be presented with a list of all your game inside the NAGI folder and you just select which one you want to play. You will even get all three MIDI voices through your sound card instead of just one through your PC speaker.

Participant(re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) About the translation of the PC game to a console…remember that there were translations of 1st person type games–namely I’m thinking about everyone’s favorite 1st-person-womanizer Duke Nukem–where the game was named the same thing, but had some drastic changes. Sticking with Duke Nukem 3d (from a few years ago) when it went to the Nintendo 64, it was drastically toned down as far as language, violence, and sexuality were concerned; the basic storyline was the same, but much of how it played was different.
Going a bit farther back in time: anyone remember a series done by Interplay Productions (then a wholly owned subsidiary of Electronic Arts) called The Bard’s Tale? The first game in that series–Episode I: Tales of the Unknown–was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in the late/middle ’80’s. The NES version was nothing like the PC/Commodore 64/Amiga/Apple verison (which were all identical, save some slight differences in graphics and sound capability between the computers). All it had going for it was the fact that both games were named The Bard’s Tale; in fact, I believe the subtitle, Tales of the Unknown, was completely removed from the NES game, though any mention of TBT without any other reference suggests a kinship to the first game.
All I suggest here is this: patience. It’s likely that there will be some differences between the games released for consoles vs games released for the PC (and perhaps Mac?). I’d bet on it, in fact. Consoles tend to market towards a wider age bracket (and so, I hope, are more likely to tone things down), where the more expensive to own/maintain PC’s have a slightly more adult target age. I recognize that this isn’t a strict sort of thing–games like Halo clearly suggest this isn’t a hard and fast type of deal–but it might help to look at the trends.
In the end: hopefully, Sierra won’t castrate our beloved Larry (due to some cash shortfalls in my childhood, I’m only now starting to delve into his previous exploits!)

Participant(re: re: LSL 8 – Confirmation!) Currently Al is not involved – which is something we’re trying to change. We’ve got a few campaigns on LarryLives to help people voice their support for Al, and are working on more. Based on all the information we are seeing, however, the design phases may well be over and the game might already be in production. If that is the case, involving Al might not change the content of the game that much (unless Sierra is willing to ‘start over’, which I think is highly improbable).
There’s ongoing debate as to what the transition to consoles may mean for the style and content of the new game. I have also voiced concern that it may result in a ‘toned down’ version. However, there have been some pretty high-profile console games that push the limit of what is considered ‘acceptable’.
Right now we are watching and waiting. We are trying to get more details from other industry insiders. One insider hinted that they may have even seen it (unsure of what condition it was in) – but all we know from the brief comment is that the new game will still include several women…. so nothing shocking there 🙂
