Let’s try and get it going. I popped in last night and took a look around. I really like the setup/style of the msg board. I tried to post but the page was having problems so I’ll try again at a later date. If there is anyway I can help just drop me a line.

Where’s that original link? I can’t find it any more. Also, how’s the list going? If there are multiple release dates for each game, are you noting them? After all, many games have multiple releases (re-releases) but perhaps those aren’t all available in that info.

Participant(re: Kinko’s scanning)
I have a feeling we have more than 20 magazines, especially if we want to also scan extraneous material, never mind the old newsletters as well. Anyway, if you remember I projected 10 megs an issue of ‘readable’ quality when we considered uploading them to this site. So if we have 2 CDs to work with (and thus can probably go larger than 10 megs per issue), the quality would be reasonable – for on screen reading, at least. I’m not sure about printing.

Participant(re: Why one earth can my Paladin cast mage spells?) I don’t try to avoid it…..in fact I try to produce a character with all abilites. Heres my plan whenever I play:
1) Start as the thief..why? cuz he can do all quests and has the only access to the guild…..nice training that dagger board gives you. I also load up my thief with Parry and Magic. That way he can do everything.
2) Import and let the game call me a fighter. It also gives me my thieves license and pick locks as well as my magic from game 1. Then I do all the mage quests, thives quests and fighters quests…..and become a paladin.
3) Import and I am called a true paladin (if done right). Now my character is all 4….magic, thieves stuff, strength, and paladin magic. Of course…there are not many theif quests to be done in 3 so my honour grows fast.
4) Import as a paladin again….now this game is fun…, all skills can be used and it even gives me some magic I never had before…hehe. It is also the easiest to avoid errors using this char.If you do this method you get the most out of all the games….I do it every time I play. 🙂

Participant(re: Why was there never a third game?) I recall reading about Sierra’s history and understood that the Manhunter series didn’t become successful enough for more sequels to get done.
By the way – it was done using the AGI interpeter. MH 2 was actually the last game to be made in AGI.October 9, 2003 at 10:07 am in reply to: re: re: re: re: Site Design – browsers compatibility #21744Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: Site Design – some more suggestions) Hi Ken,
About the additional fields – if you “normalize” your database so every webmaster can add additional fields as he want, I believe you can request this data from the database easily.
About the colors: You’re using CSS (goody!), so I suggest that instead of specifying all the colors inside the website HTML tags, (the <style> and then all the specifications), create a “scheme.css” file in the website root, and use this tag in all your websites: (should be in the <head> part of the document)
<link REL=”StyleSheet” HREF=”scheme.css” TYPE=”text/css” MEDIA=”screen”>this way, changing colors is only a matter of editing this CSS text file which will be in the root directory of every website. (the file should contain everything that you have BETWEEN the <style> and </style>. (excluding this tag)
Also, you should add to the “a.roll:hover” the property “cursor: hand;”, because on Netscape (and so possibly some other) it shows the cursor as the text cursor (that “|” cursor) when you are over the links on the pop-up menu.
Regarding the width of the menu – did you use a function to determine it? because on
Link: http://www.talkspot.com(http://www.talkspot.com)
the support menu has only 1 entry – “FAQ” – and the width is too short!
-Eyal. (not Yval… check my location to understand)P.S – I’ll try to download the exterior look of the website to my computer and “play” with it a bit.
P.S 2 – I suggested a use of some sort of logo in my previous post, you might have missed it when you wrote your reply.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(Why one earth can my Paladin cast mage spells?)
I’ve been wanting the answer to this question for years. I’m at the end of my rope and I really hope someone knows the answer. Here’s what happens: Start a fighter in QFG1, become Paladin in 2, import to 3 with no problem.. but in 4 I have all the mage spells. Heck, I even have Open Locks at 20k. Is it because in QFG3 you gain 5 points in magic when you get your first Paladin ability? Is there any way to avoid getting mage spells while still importing throughout all 5 games? Thanks in advance.

I noticed that the date on the website is 2000, so it’s possible the whole thing has been abandoned.

Participant(re: re: re: Kinko’s scanning) I’d have to agree with Ken on the ‘getting boring’ bit…. I scanned a 195 page service manual (glue bound spine) using a flatbed scanner. Took me quite a few hours just to scan it. Then I spent around 3 times that amount manually cleaning, touching up, despeckeling, cropping and making minor rotation adjustments to each of the pages. Finally, I pushed it through a PDF generator and popped 20Mb worth of files! It was a very very dull process!
Given the type of content, I didn’t scan anything over 150dpi but given the nature of the ‘magazines’ it would be prudent to scan them at 300dpi or more in order to maintain the source definition. However, I think a single A4 (sorry, didn’t know size of letter!) page scan saved in a [raw] format would be around the 25MB mark (for 300dpi). PDF does do some processing on the image but I think you’ll need a decent generator (Adobe’s) in order to have full control of the process. I don’t know the PDF specs at all so I don’t know if you can choose/force the compression algorthim (lossy/not).
Best of luck!Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: Site design) Hiya Ken,
You may guess that I’ve got a site suggestion 🙂
I liked the button bar graphics as was so this new layout whilst it’s OK, look a bit bland by comparison. If you’re still considering using a drop down menu, here’s a really (really!) cool menu bar :

I understand your issue – but, still have doubts.
Here’s my thinking…
If the project is done at Kinkos, then I am 99% certain it will actually get done. If you do it — my guess is that the first issue will get done, the second may get done, and the third WON’T get done.
The project will get old quickly. Enthusiasm at the beginning will turn into hopeless boredom.
If Kinkos does a bad job they won’t get paid – and, will have to redo the job.
Here’s the biggest question to me: if we want no more than 2 CDs, and have roughly 20 magazines (I don’t know the actual count) – what quality is possible?

Aha…
If it still doesn’t work, then my guess is that you don’t have Microsoft office installed, or not installed correctly.
I use some components that are part of office.
I’ll add a mode which should fix your problem (if you confirm that this is what is happening).

Ken and Doug MacNeil were the designers of Gold Rush. This topic has come up before, Ken has posted about it also. Look under Cool Sierra Links. Whatever the case may be, I believe that they are selling the game through the company Software farm. I wrote an email to them a while ago asking if they had any copies of the game left(wooden box version). I never recieved a reply though.

What browser are you using, and on what computer?
I have a major upgrade to the code that I’ll be uploading sometime soon. The odds are that it fixes your problem. I have the code changes complete, but am on a slow dial-up line from a hotel (20k). I’m waiting for a faster internet connection before I do the upgrade. My guess is that it will be sometime in the next five days.

Participant(re: Goldrush lives again) Hmmm…I looked at the page you listed, and the graphics sure do look like what you’d expect of a Sierra game.
One thing bothers me, though. Did you look at the “Meet the Authors” page?
Link: http://www.softwarefarm.com/gr_authors.htm(http://www.softwarefarm.com/gr_authors.htm) I don’t know who authored the Sierra game, but either The Software Farm got them to pose, or something. Here’s what the first caption (about the authors) actually says:
Ken and Doug MacNeill, born in New York, lived many years in the heart of the California Gold country while working for a major software development company.
The two men are posing in front of what looks like an old 386 or 486 (I notice the vintage 5.25″ drives, particularly) so it’s entirely possible that it’s an old publicity shot from the first game, or just a mock up for a “vintage” feel.
I’d be interested in knowing what Ken thinks of it.

Participant(re: re: What Sierra told me.) So let me get this straight….it does not make financial sense to revive the old classic series….but it does not make sense to let them go free……*sigh*
This is why I support abandonware………Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: What Sierra told me.) So, Sierra are basically saying that due to royalties agreement they’d have to honour to (one assumes ex-) employee’s the likelyhood of resurrecting the old adventures is near zero 🙁 That’s a real shame.
However, surely there’s some developers in Sierra who’ve got an urge to update the interpreters for modern platforms?! Failing that, I think it would be a PR coup if Sierra were to release the source code to the developers of SCUMMVM… that way the nostalgic people are happy and Sierra get more recognition/advertising. Yeah, I know – dreaming but if the likes of Revolution (Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword) and John Passfield/Tony Ball (as was Renegade – Flight of the Amazon Queen) can release source code for old titles then why not Sierra?Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: What Sierra told me.) This is very inetesting! Can you tell what email address you’ve been writing to? I have tried to find one myself, but it seemed very much that Sierra did not really care for contact to the real world…
thanks, doernUnknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Interview With Lori Ann Cole and Corey Cole) This is cool! The Quest for Glory series has always been one of my favorites. Mixing classical role playing concepts like character generation and development, combat and the class system with classical adventure gaming (both of whose origins, namely Colossal Caves Adventure and Zork can be traced back via Dungeons and Dragons to Tolkien and folkloristic storytelling) was definitely a need for role playing games of the time that were mostly hack-and-slash and the result was a classic unrivaled to this day. It was very interesting to read about the Coles’ view on the series, game design, role playing games and what they’re up to now. Pity there’s nothing like Quest for Glory around anymore. Or like the good old Sierra Online… *SIGH*
