Participant(re: re: re: Larry is going to college!) hi everybody, hi Adventure Gamers
I am sorry everybody, but if you have been following the board in the past couple of days, nothing of what has been posted about Larry 8 should be news to you, since Mr.Mongoose and I have been updating the info regularly. The only thing that might seem new is the comparison to GTA. I am sorry, but am I the only one to whom this GTA comment seems … well … like a joke? “It’s like GTA, but with less violence and more sex”´, and this from Josh Mandel??? GTA is all about violence and Larry is all about sex. You couldn’t find a game that has less to to with Larry, could you??? Look here: He was trying to be funny!!!doern (

Did you run the “Install.exe” to configure the game’s settings? Be sure “Use your machines extra memory” is selected under the Memory setting. You can also try installing the Windows version, it seems to work OK. You don’t need VDMSound for Windows programs, of course.

Participant(Chat It up!) The folks over at Quest Studios have a snazzy and very easy IRC set up to use (no download required), so perhaps we could all set up a time to meet in there, and just chat it up some?

Participant(re: re: re: Larry is going to college!) There is something funky with the link. Look at the URL when you click it, it’s incorrect. Copy and paste the link and it should work (at any rate, I reposted it and the picture somewhere in here)

Participant(re: re: Larry is going to college!) New Leisure Suit Larry adventure announced

A little bit of digging on the website of the magazine
Link: Computer Games(http://www.computergamesonline.com/cgm/200312-m1.html)
has revealed that none other than Larry Laffer will be on the cover of the December 2003 issue, with a preview of the apparently-confirmed new adventure game, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude. The article is not accessible yet, but the teaser makes a reference to similarities to Grand Theft Auto. We have already learned that Al Lowe has nothing to do with this new game. The December 2003 issue of Computer Games will go on sale November 11th. We will be sure to report more on this as we learn more. At this point, we at Adventure Gamers are simply pleasantly surprised that a classic Sierra license has been revived. Now, our hope is that it is treated well, and we will remain optimistic as to that fact until we have substantial reason to believe otherwise.
Update, 10/21: Al Lowe has spoken! The patriarch of one of adventure gaming’s greatest legacy has spilled everything he knows about the new Leisure Suit Larry game…which isn’t much. He does say that the game has been secretly in development for more than a year, and confirms he’s had nothing to do with it, but still volunteers his services. Read his comments at
Link: his website(http://www.allowe.com/L-8news.htm)
.Update, 10/20: We made a quick call to VU Games (Sierra’s parent company), who predictably declined to comment on the game, as it has not been officially announced. Meanwhile, the above link with the article’s teaser blurb has been removed from the site. It was believed that the LSL cover image was removed as well; however, it has

Participant(re: re: Larry is going to college!) I treid the link in the post below and it didn’t work, don’t know whether that’s just a problem with my PC or what. Anyhow, the cover can also be viewed on LarryLives.com, the exact text has been posted on our forum!
Good luck!

Participant(Half Life 2 Revisited) I have heard a rumor that although the source code was stolen, one of the major reasons that the game was pushed back was to refine some of the graphics because Doom 3 looks considerably better than expected and that Valve wanted to “beef” up the graphic potential of the game. Althought this is all a rumor, it does make a little bit of sense because looking the the game play videos of Doom 3, it does look better than HL2.

Cool!
What do you think the cost per page, and size per page, could be at this qualiity?
I’m on a slow modem, so I can’t download it (I did try and could only see the first page before I lost patience)

Yeah, Sierra was right about the future gaming especially with the blurring of the lines between multimedia and video games. But, while one part of me feels nostalgic about the “good ole days” I can’t help but feel that there is still room in the world for games that use text commands as input.
I say this because using a computer still requires a large amount of typing. Until some geek out in Silicon Valley comes up with a way to commit our thoughts unto the digital ether via some kind of computer/mind interface (I am sure they are already working on it) typing thoughts in on a keyboard will still be necessary evil of using the computer.
Instant messaging has probably help a lot of people to type faster, but doesn’t necessarily lend it’s self to eloquence. I still believe that there is room for a game based upon text input that can be married up with a more literary subject matter. I’m not talking about reinventing Zork, but instead a game that would require players to read and then use the commands and vocabulary that they’ve learned to complete their tasks.
In all honesty this would be less like a game and more like a teaching tool. The reason I think that it would work is because of all the “learning” software that I’ve used I’ve found both the premise and plot to be over simplistic. Just because a piece of software is supposed to teach players something doesn’t mean it should skimp on story or details.
With all the emphasis placed on getting kids to read, don’t you think it’s time someone wrote a game that taught them to comprehend and think critically? Learning to digest information and use it to solve problems should be equally as important as learning to communicate your thoughts with others. That’s why I feel that the text control scheme still has merit in the modern age of gaming.

If people are still looking to see the Larry cover of CGM, Adventure Gamers has it up. Unfortunately, it looks like Computer Gamers realized their error & took the preview text down. They mention that it might have similarities to Grand Theft Auto (what, like hookers?) which sounds like it could be cool. Anyway, check out the link below.

Participant(re: re: re: Sierra and Half-Life 2) Yeah, naturally Valve have backups of their work. But what is completely beyond me is why a software company with such a project actually had it accessible on a network directly conntected to the Internet, and in addition to that used Microsoft products like Outlook Express, which are known to be insecure and often hacked?! Shouldn’t they be more protective of their material, and work on it in a physically separated network? I mean, they are working on technology to distribute the game on the Internet and support online playing in the game, but shouldn’t they separate the basic product from the Internet as much as they could? At the very least, the programming team could have stored the source code in an internal, protected network. No use to have source code spread out over the whole net. As much as I hate the person/people who hacked Valve, I can only feel that they have themselves to blame.
And about Sierra: I’ve read about that Frogger incident. I also think I read somewhere about the security measures of Sierra in the late 80’s. I remember things about security access zones in the building and a vault with hardware that was not released on the market yet. Things like that. Does anyone know if TSN/INN ever had problems with people trying to sabotage things, or hackers breaking into the system somehow?Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Wow . . . it’s been a while!) I have a mess of original INN/TSN stuff – though not the original boxes of YS or TW… a lot of it I sent photos to um… um… what’s his name, lol, I can’t believe I forgot but it’s been so long since I poked my head around here… the guy who was supposed to get this site up and running before Ken decided to take it over (thankfully as the other site was going nowhere, sadly)…

Participant(re: re: re: Why was there never a third game?) The Murry’s did AAoW? Did they do the others as well? HGrmph! I never knew that… while a fun game, Manhunter was superior… so they took a step back in that regard. (Or so I think)
Interesting about the cover… may have to hunt for it just for collection purposes! 🙂
And aye, one of them, sadly, did pass on. 🙁

Participant(re: Goldrush lives again) I dropped a line myself asking if it was still available just now as well.
Curious (perhaps Kenn could answer), how it is that they’re able to resell the GOLDRUSH game, yet other makers are not able to resale the games they worked on? (Or are they able to?) Or were the folks who did GOLDRUSH under a different contract, then say, Al Lowe?Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Sierra to get new owner) Has anyone found any new information on this?

Participant(re: Space Quest 4 CD at right speed and voices) You can also try GOSIERRA…

Participant(re: RPG’s as opposed to Adventure Games) If you want a good RPG, I’d suggest REALMS OF ARKANIA (best to get it in the TRILOGY pack these days… BLADE OF DESTINY, STAR TRAIL and SHADOWS OVER RIVA). Another good set of RPG is WIZARDRY (they just released WIZARDRY 8 not TOO long ago… good, fun game, even my wife enjoyed it). And of course, NEVERWINTER NIGHTS.

Participant(re: Space Quest taught me to type!) Brian, you’re not alone.
Believe it or not Sierra games also taught me to type. When I first caught wind of what they planned for KING’S QUEST V, my friend Shawn and I quickly dropped Sierra a line saying how bad of an idea this was, and that typing was not only more challenging (rather than clicking wildly on everything on the screen until something was picked up), but it also taught one how to, well, type!
We got the canned response that this was the wave of the future (well, I have to give them credit for being right at least). But I agree. To this day, I prefer playing the older Sierra games that require typing, just because those were the games that presented more of a challenge for me back then.
It’s been a dream of mine to “pull together” a creative team to use the AGI editors and what not to create Sierra type games, and just distribute them for free – just so others can have fun with the games, as I did when Sierra created them…Unknown,Unknown
