(InterAction Star! Well, sort of…) I am eager to see these redone as well… well, mostly because yours truly was in an issue of InterAction… well, my picture was anyway. For the Leisure Suit Larry contest (dress alike) – they used my picture to set up the contest… It’s me, at a digitized bar, with one of the fine ladies of the (redone!) LSL1! 🙂

(Let me introduce myself…) Hello my name is Keith Weatherby II. I’m new here, as you can tell. Umm… i’ve been playing games since the 80’s 😉 and sierra games since the late 80’s starting with Mickey’s Space Adventure on the c64. Then when I managed to burn the c64 out by leaving it on too long, we shortly therafter got a tandy 1000hx with a monochrome monitor. Then later a 286. Got King’s Quest 4 thereafter, and then not too much later Space Quest 3 (reguardless of what anyone says I beleive this is the best game of the series)… later I managed to get King’s Quest 6, and 5 way later in like a surplus computer store. I also got space quest 6 from my friend as a b-day present. Oh yeah, I managed to rent space quest 4 back in the software pipeline days… But I never copied it just played it returned it, etc… and later got a copy from my friend (er legal copy not, copy-copy, he managed to get it in some sort of classics pack and gave me his old copy that he had bought). Anyways… Currently I still have my old tandy/ibm compatible version of space quest 3 and king’s quest 4. Actually these are my original bought copies and they still work too, all the way back from the late 80’s early 90’s (can’t remember exactly, it’s all hazy)! My version of King’s Quest 6 is the disk version, which IMHO is better than the cd version (I played around with the cd version at my friends house one day, liked the disk version better). Unfortunately some of the disks got corrupted 🙁 But I still managed to keep it, maybe someday I can find a copy to buy if any copies of the disk version (that still work) exist. So i’ve been a fan since way-way back. I do have a confession to make though, I like many others, converted to LucasArts… However even so, Sierra adventures were instrumental in getting me interested in computer games, computer programming, etc. Now i’m delighted to find a place here like this to share the memories. Thanks Ken and Roberta 🙂

(re: Space Quest Movie) Actually I just wanted to post new because that other thread is sort of several months old now. In any case i’ve been thinking about a space quest movie for a long time. Skip any other actors playing the parts of Roger Wilco, i’d have to say David Spade SHOULD be Roger Wilco. In fact he already played a janitor in Joe Dirt. And for Sludge Vohaul (assuming he’d be still alive when this would ever get made) should be played by none-other than Joss Ackland. If you don’t know who he is check this out –
    Link: http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000722/(http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000722/)
    — for the movies he’s been in. He was in the Mighty Ducks as Hans (who was the mentor to Emilio Estevez’s character) he was also in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey as De Nomolos (the bad guy)… These are just a couple of the movies that stand out in my mind as something some of you would perhaps have seen… More recent, he was also in A Kid in King Arthur’s Court as King Arthur, and in K-19 the window maker… Of course a few of these aren’t that great of movies but they’re the ones I know him from most (except K-19 that i’ve only seen once). Anyways put him in blue makeup and you have Sludge Vohaul. Go find some pictures of him and you’ll know what I mean. Wow how did this message end up as a plug for him, when really I wanted to emhasize David Spade as Roger Wilco, i mean… He’s who i’ve always thought was most like Roger. In any case if they made a movie, they should use Space Quest 1 and 2 and combine them, it would make it pretty good… Anyway sorry for such a long post as my first post heh… I’m sort of emphatic about this and never had a place to put my thoughts on the subject 😉

(re: Release Dates) Ken, I’m surprised you don’t have archived records of these sorts of things. Oh well. I suppose, like everything else, if you did they’d be in a box somewhere. Alright, Sierra fan party at Ken’s house 🙂
All Sierra disks have a bunch of stuff on them, including I think a release date! Is this true? It might be more accurate than the copyright date. The disks have a version # and what is called an “int#”. Now, on the earliest Sierra games it says “interpreter #” and it looks like the version of the AGI or SCI interpreter, but on later games the format looks like a release date to me. Anyway, I’ll post the ones I have here, and I will be adding more too (and I’ll indicate when I’m done). Maybe this will help the list. Compare to what you have and see if these are anywhere close to the dates you have. It could still relate to the interpreter version, and that could be months or days behind the actual release date.

(re: Question to Roberta/Ken about King’s Quest inconsistencies) I think they were two diferent worlds: the one in KQ6 was “The land of the dead” and the one in KQ8 was “Dimension of the dead” or something like that, but well, they are apparently the same…
And keep the good work with KQ9, im really excited about it 🙂

(Question to Roberta/Ken about King’s Quest inconsistencies) Hello,
I was wondering if Roberta, or Ken, could answer us a question that we’ve encountered a problem with:
In both KQ6 and KQ8, we travel to the Land of the Dead. However, It’s not the same Lord in each game. One is nameless and looks really cool (KQ6). The other is based on egyptian mythology (KQ8, Azriel). Why are there two different Lords of the Dead? Is there any explanation to this or to the difference between the lands of the dead found in each game?

(re: Larry is going to college!) I also think that Josh was joking about new adventure games being 3D and with some action elements, it would be very odd seeing a game looking like Grand theft auto where you have to date girls, Josh commentary has been taken very seriously, a lot of sites say about the posibility of that new lsl game being like GTA, seems people is getting very mad by this joke! -_- Anyway i wouldnt be very surprised if it looks like The sims or like any “social life simulator” but more oriented to sex… dont know, time will tell.

(re: re: re: Ken Williams Q&A) Why isn’t Reberta working for Sierra to creat a Kings Quest 9?
The true story is that Roberta decided to take some time off after completing KQ: MoE. Then Sierra’s business strategy changed and they saw no future in adventure games. The rights to King’s Quest is owned by Sierra and not Roberta, so it’s their call to make another sequel, not hers. They don’t even have to make it with Roberta. As for her, I think she would be willing to work with them on a sequel if asked and under the right conditions. However, at this time there is nothing indicating that this would be likely to happen. Sierra will continue the KQ seris under one condition: They think it will give them financial profit. And right now, their estimate is that adventure games don’t sell well enough.

Thanks for stating some really good points so I’don’t have to 😉 I was afraid I was the only one who thought Josh’s comment was quite funny, but never to be taken seriously. Now at least there’s two of us and I’m feeling better already.

(re: 1st Interaction PDF Prototype! Kinko’s scanning) Looks good – the quality is a bit lower than I would like for the PDF version of the document, as someone else already mentioned (I assume you are saving 300 DPI jpgs or pngs or something). Furthermore, I can’t help but wish for those special pages, such as the KQ4 centerfold, that those would be available as 300 dpi jpg and put together already, so that you can see the whole spread joined.
Still, it’s really cool just to see the whole newsletter, one that I don’t have, in its entirety.
And I finally printed it, and it looks great – and I made a few further comments / questions in the “new interaction magazine discussion” thread.

(re: re: re: re: re: Larry is going to college!)

Actually, Adam Kahn, Vivendi Universal Games Senior PR representative has posted a couple of messages over on the LarryLives.com message board (which, honestly, surprised even me!) so they definately know about it.

I had the same question about Josh’s possible role in game development, and we are trying to figure that out. We’ll probably know pretty soon because just today our sources told us that Sierra is planning on making a public news statement as soon as tomorrow (October 23rd)! Once that happens we’ll probably be bombarded with new info about the new game!

As always, we’ll keep everyone posted!

(re: re: re: re: Larry is going to college!) Doing an LSL action game is completely pointless, because the Larry persona has never had anything to do with action. If they wanted to do an action game they could easily make a character up.
I think that the visuals of the game will be different, because this Larry will be the first “real” 3D-Larry, probably looking somewhat like the 3D rendered Larry we know from the rather old “test” avi clip Al Lowe has put up on
    Link: http://www.allowe.com(http://www.allowe.com)
(although all the games have been labelled 3-D animated adventure games the only quest games I know of that actually used rendered 3D graphics were KQ8 and QFG5, following, once more, the call of the future – which eventually seemed to say “adventure games are soon to die, they offer too little action and force people to think indesirably effortfully. Bad for the market!” ;o)
So Josh Mandel may have found the game’s appeal more similar to GTA than the former Larry games and he was definitely joking about that and mocking the Larry fans uprising everywhere (there’s no way the folks at Vivendi don’t know about
    Link: http://www.larrylives.com(http://www.larrylives.com)
and the hordes of fans eager to play a new LSL game and angry that Al isn’t in it.) However, I think that the 3D environment that is being used in the game and in any other game that’s being marketed nowadays will doubtlessly stage the same seduce-and-lose-stew gamers are used to from Larry.
Question: Is Josh Mandel in the design team? And if so, why isn’t Al Lowe?

(re: re: re: re: re: Leisure Suit Larry 6 Memory Error) hey no problem… 🙂 glad it works for you. Actually I have a very wide knowledge about problems with the old games on new computers… especially QFG (we have a website over at
    Link: http://www.geocities.com/qfgs(http://www.geocities.com/qfgs)
    )
this happens because today sound cards don’t actually have a midi player, it’s actually a software (part of the sound driver) that listens to the MIDI port, and play actually WAV accordingly. That’s why if you try to “play” into the MIDI chip on the sound-card (i.e you choose Sound-Blaster/Adlib, even if it says it supports it, and it says that becuase your card is SB compatible) yout get nothing because THERE IS NO MIDI CHIP there…

Thanks for the help.  Setting the music selection to ‘general midi’ as suggested by qfgs worked.  But I did download that file to save in case I need it in the future.

(re: 1st Interaction PDF Prototype! Kinko’s scanning)

I think the result is overall very satisfying. Good quality and usability for that file size. However, I think the quality/size ratio should be carefully calculated, so that no space is “wasted” on a possible CD. Personally, I would have wanted just a tad more quality in the final version. For instance, look at that portrait of Roberta in the interview section. I think it is too bad for a decent archival effort.

(re: re: re: Leisure Suit Larry 6 Memory Error) Basically, it fixes all the problems with the digital sound driver so you don’t get the “Unable to initialize sound hardware” message when you start up the game. Hence why you could play all SCI1 games on a P3 500 laptop, for example.

QFG was the game that changed my life.  This was the best series of games ever created.  I have played a lot of games in my time, but the Quest for Glory, and Space Quest series are the only ones I really look back on with fond memories.

Hi collector.  Yes, I did run the install program and configured for the sound card and extended memory.  I still don’t get the music.  Just the sound effects and graphics.  Quite honestly I think a lot of these problems are related to this Sony Vaio laptop I have.  It’s a  couple of years old and I notice form reading other people’s posts that this machine doesn’t seem quite as adaptable to old programs.  I’m on the lookout for a new desktop which probably will solve all these problems.  Thanks for your suggestions though.
