From what I saw on that preview movie on the new Larry game it seems to me that they’re using the same engine they used for the Simpsons Hit and Run… do you guys think that it could also have the same play style?
Cheers,
Nick.

Participant(re: re: A new language maybe? (I accidently posted this in the Q&A section first)) The software behind this site is actually serving about 25 different sites, with more being added constantly – so nothing is easy, as lots of different people/websites can be affected.
I’m working on the feature now that allows each webmaster to choose their own look from a palatte of options. I’m working with a design firm to come up with the looks, and should have them in place within 2-3 months.
I agree that this look is a little too “sterile”. Not my style … but, MUCH better than what we had before…

I haven’t played Morrowind – but I know it’s not an adventure. To me, a King’s Quest game that’s not an adventure isn’t truly a King’s Quest game. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sierra / Vivendi someday “resurrected” the franchise by slapping the king’s quest name on a different type of game — they’ve done it before. (We’ll see how well it works with the new Leisure Suit Larry game…) But if it’s not an adventure, having the King’s Quest game isn’t necessarily going to make me like it.
It’s true that the GE / Vivendi deal did not include VUGames. As far as I know, that division is still under Vivendi’s control.

I like this incarnation much more than the former one. The biggest improvement is the fact that you can see all the posts in a thread together. However, I’ve seen people complain about the look of this site. I think it looks fine, but in order to please all the people who don’t like it, why don’t you offer the option to choose different site designs/templates? You might have addressed this somewhere else. If so, my apologies.

I believe G.E. just bought Vivendi. Then I heard that VUGames was not part of the deal. This part kind of confused me. Maybe somebody else can clarify that.
I just saw a post in a different secton that basically summed up the history of Sierra. http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs.asp?msgId=20025

Participant(Bethesda and Elder Scrolls)
I may be off here, but what do you all think of Bethesda Softworks and their Elder Scrolls series, with the most recent TES III: Morrowind winning Game of the Year in 2002. Not only was it the most satisfying adventure/rpg game I’ve played since TrueSierra, but it was also the first one I really enjoyed playing on a console (XBOX) … the music was super, the graphics were excellent, the gameplay was LOOOONG with dozens of ‘quests’ … enough action elements to keep you happy, but it was mostly tasks and quests.. the drawback here is that there were few puzzles.. but…
It would seem that Bethesda could be the next Sierra? Their next game was Pirates of the Caribbean, which was REALLY Sea Dogs II (another open ended game like Morrowind), and now they have a horror game coming, Call of Cthulu. And of course, the future Elder Scrolls IV.
Basically what I’m getting at is – how do you think Bethesda and its Elder Scrolls, etc, compare to our beloved Sierra, and could its HUGE success somehow convince EvilNewSierra to come out with, say, a Kings Quest game similar to Morrowind?
Proof is in the awards, sales, and fervent passion of the Morrowind fans – that format SELLS. and it ENDURES. Morrowind’s new Game Of The Year Edition (w/ 2 expansion packs) is a HOT item right now..
Kings Quest IX?

Note that there is now an XBOX port of Sarien – called SarienX – I have not yet tried it, but I’m going to … I’m not sure how it interacts with keyboards; there’s two methods of it on XBOX, one is running a keyboard server on a PC and the other a custom XBOX keyboard driver using a USB keyboard (much better).. I probably won’t bother until SarienX supports the keyboard driver…
Of course, all of this requires a modified XBOX. But if all you’re using it for is homebrew software, its okay.

Interesting… I didn’t know there were no cutscenes on an NES.
How are the opening and closing movies presented? (The only other cutscene-like thing I can think of is the part when Graham talks to the fortune teller and sees his family in the crystal ball… oh, I guess that’s what you mean by ‘like Mordack holding Alexander”…)

When I was referring to the cut-scenes I was thinking beyond KQV for the NES, and just famous cut-scenes from the games in general.
I just wanted to let everyone know that it would be possible to take scenes/action from the games, and put it on DVD as well…. so let the ideas roll.

I’ve stared my screenshot quest…..how many do you think I should take? Maybe I’ll spread them out to all the different special scenes. Taking one of each area would be too large.

Cut-scenes? You forget we are talking about the NES here….almost nothing is done by itself. Most of the scenes (like mordack holding Alexander) are just text messages instead of actual cut-scenes. The only scenes where anything decent happens is at the end.

Brandon,
This would be something definitely that we could add to the DVD Video Archive. Once we get the ball rolling on the Video Archive we will orgranize a list of everything that we want to put on the DVD and look at the project as a whole.
If we decide to put cut scenes from the games I will set up a computer / NES / SMS / etc up and route it to one of the video decks – shouldn’t be a problem. The time consuming part will be loading the games and getting to the appropriate scenes – especially if we want to capture stuff that is in the “middle” of the game – I can’t think of any of those right now, but if there are – we might need to get people involved to play up to that point, and send in their saved games that we can load.
Way back in the day on my PCjr I recorded myself playing Gold Rush to a VHS tape – the PCjr had RCA ports built on to the box.. was pretty cool. I wonder if that tape is still around??

Here’s a good website that shows tons of stuff on the sega master system version. I wonder why the didn’t do the same for kqv for the nes.

Yeah, very expensive though for a box and manual included in good condition. I’d like to see big scans of the box / manual – so I am always watching out for cheaper prices on eBay. By the way I found someone typed in the manual for a website, I forget the link now, but I can find it again (or someone else can with Google), and post the link here.

An AVI movie would be good – and like Emily said, a movie of some of the little cutscenes would be cool to see – no, not the whole game! You’re right, that would be large. And also as I said, something like this would be great for Brad to incorporate into the DVD project. But firstly, just having a good number of screenshots spread throughout the game would be great.

It would be neat to see some of the cutscenes as a movie file (especially if there are differences from the PC cutscenes).
I’m looking forward to those screenshots!

Will do. I’ve been bored lately anyway so this will keep me busy. The movie idea…..I can make NES type movies but they will only play thru specific emulators. I think there are some which can produce avi movies though. One thing….what type of movie would you want? A gameplay movie all the way through? That would be very large wouldn’t it?
Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: King’s Quest V for NES) That would be great for you to do that. I don’t know if it’s possible, but could a video file be made as well? I think this would be something for Brad to be able to capture and put on the DVD… he said he could do old Sierra demos, so I’m sure he could do this.
Anyway, screenshots would be great, and if you’d post them in the King’s Quest Museum area I think would be most appropriate.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: re: King’s Quest V for NES)
Sorry to post twice here, but do you guys want me to get you some King’s Quest 5 NES version screenshots? I can make them nice and clear for you to see. Just say the word and I’ll start up the ‘ol emulator!

Participant(re: InterAction Mag.) I wonder if any of the other designers still have their documents and could be convinced to share some scans with us?
I’m going to work on that actually… That is part of what I discussed with Ken. I’m starting by just getting in touch with whoever I can and see if I can get them to contribute anything. I’ll keep track of all correspondance… now if some contribute, maybe afterwards those who wouldn’t at first would be convinced by what others contribute.
I will keep you updated on this – so please don’t everyone go and start emailing other Sierra designers.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: Interview With Al Lowe) Nice interview. Al Lowe always seems to have time for anyone, just the way Sierra used to be. It just goes to show that it was those original guys were the ones who “made” sierra what it was.

Participant(re: re: King’s Quest V for NES) I never knew about King’s Quest 1 for the master system…
I did however play King’s Quest 5 back when the NES was around. I remember renting it after seeing the PC version. The game is ok, but it just isn’t as goood as the PC version. I still have the rom on my IMBNES cd. The one thing that kills it the most is the password/temp save thing.Unknown,Unknown

I also posted this in the conversation area, but I thought it was appropriate to copy it here, as well:
I’m not sure if this has been posted yet or not, but Lori Cole is featured in the new issue of The Inventory, which is the online magazine (free for download) at Justadventure.com. It’s a long and interesting interview. It is located in the mid-October issue with the green cover with “Broken Saints” featured.
According to her interview, Ms. Cole is now working on a series of books based on Hero Quest, or Quest for Glory, and she would like to buy the rights to the Hero Quest/Quest for Glory games. She has a website at Howtobeahero.com.
Happy gaming,

I remember seeing Chris in InterAction doing a review of the Birthright game Sierra made. He had a sword, and there was one photo where a guy was “killing him”. 🙂
