I did look at the screenshots. They look great, but I couldn’t get much of a sense of the game from the pictures. No characters are shown. Also, I can’t see the interface. Is it the same simulated 3d as Sierra’s old games? Do the characters speak? Is it a point and click interface, or a text parser? Actually, the most important question is: how well did they sell?

PS You are correct; Jeff Tunnell of Garage Games is the same person who did The Incredible Machine – – an INCREDIBLE product.

    Hi,

great stuff. But with Windows XP, the most cards don’t run, or run without sounds. All ideas are great. And as the was released in the years, I didn’t see other companies, which create some cards like this. Great Sierra, great Ken & Roberta. Thanx !

(re: Kings Quest VII:Not Working) You MUST have version 2 of the game to play the Windows version on XP. Earlier versions will crash on launch with a DLL error. Version 2 can be found on the 2nd collection and the Roberta Williams Anthology. I believe that there was a stand alone release of version 2, but I am not sure.
It is too bad that the versions that will not run on XP are also did not include the DOS version.

I’m not sure where to put it on the site, but it deserves to be somewhere prominent. When I get some free time I’ll put it somewhere.

(re: Sierra History Questions for Ken) Sorry for the abbreviated response .. as you suspected, I’m heading out of town for Thanksgiving … actually, I’ll be gone for about eight months except for a few days – so, Roberta and I are scrambling today.
    1) Was AGI designed by Sierra and if so who? Was it vector based like SCI?
AGI was designed between Jeff Stephenson (one of the first Sierra employees) and myself. It’s primary difference with SCI was that it was a normal procedural language, like C. SCI was 100% object oriented, like C++. I used to say at the time, and I’m fairly certain I’m right, that we shipped more object oriented code in the 80’s than any other company on earth.

    (2) Were there any qualifications you had for your artists in the early days? Was computer experience needed?
There was a gradual improvement in the quality of the people we hired; from initially amateur artists, to professionals. By the end we were regularly hiring people from the film industry.

    (3) I understand the artists worked with hand drawn sketches when creating images for games such as King’s Quest IV. Were these sketches scanned in and traced over with vector lines or just used as simple reference?

I think different artists did it differently – but, my recollection is that some artists started with a pencil sketch, scanned it, and then painted on top onscreen (for animation). For the backgrounds, these were almost always painted, and then scanned as final paintings.

Also, Unless you have the first released version of the game, you should have both a DOS and a Windows version on your CD. You might want to try both. In any case, trying Win95 compability mode is definately a good idea and you might also need to use VDMSound or some other tool if it’s the sound that’s bugging you.

And beware of speed-related problems. For instance, there’s a puzzle in the game that requires you to carry a lit firecracker. It’s supposed to give you a minute or two before it blows up, but on my relatively slow computer it does so after about a second! Still, since the game allows you to return to the point before you died and the time seems to reset itself if you do so, it should still be possible to play through that sequence. It’s just very annoying…

    Man, that sucks!

Anwyay, thank you very much for checking! 🙂

Hmm, where to go next? There has to exist records of this somehwere, deep down in Sierra’s archives? I’d hate to ask you to spend time looking for this for me Ken, but in case you know where to find it directly or have some suggestions where to look, I’d be glad to know… Neither KQ5, 7, MoE or any other Sierra game with voices that I’ve checked had this sloppy voice credits.

    what message are you getting?

i have played this on XP with no problems, but i know compatibility on XP can differ from system to system… make sure you put it in compatibility mode (try win95).

the only problem i remember having with this was that i couldn’t run the game from my DVD drive and had to use my CD-RW. that could be because i installed from the CD-RW, not sure.

Thanks for posting everyone. If no one minds, I’ll check these all out and then just make one post with the Christmas demos and delete all the extra posts, when things have settled down (but I’ll keep Ken’s comments). If anyone posts a Christmas demo that Brian doesn’t have on his AGI/SCI website, I’ll make sure to send it to him. In return, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind us borrowing any that he has on his site.

I have a copy of the original CD release with a CD insert (I don’t have the Guidebook of the Green Isles that came with this release) — I’ll check the insert for this info. I’ll also check the manual that came with my KQ Collection.

I have a couple beat-up copies of the original disk release, so obviously the voices aren’t listed there. And I can tell you they aren’t listed in the hintbook either. I’m sure they must be listed in the documentation of the original CD release, as long as someone out there has it? Interaction may be another possibility, though I don’t remember anything off-hand from the issues I have.

Good luck to you! I’m jealous .. I wish I was your age and pursuing a film career.
It’s a tough business to break into — but, I think it’s just a matter of being persistent, and shooting short films until something you do gets noticed.
Roberta and I go back and forth everyday on if we’ll do something again or not. My guess is that if you look through this board there will be as many messages where I say we’ll do something again, as there are that we won’t.
For now, we are definitely retired and having fun!

(re: re: I always like Sierra) Well I have to agree with Roberta, we just need that one Adventure block buster to open the gate.
I have an idea, every time your kids come over bug them about getting girlfriends and having kids. Tell them you want grand children. Of course you would have to be more subtle then that. They will do it just to get you off their back!
