I think there’s a patch there that supposedly fixes this problem. I heard that some people have difficulties with the pentagram.

(re: I don’t receive e-mail notification anymore!) I fixed a bug in the daily emails … apparently I broke something. Sorry – I’ll work on it this afternoon.

PS I’ve been working hard this afternoon … someone hacked my server, and I’m at a total loss as to what to do about it. I’m not a server guru, and not 100% sure how to lock things down.

(re: Al Lowe Design Documents) I’d really like to see some design documents from the older, parser-based games. LSL 1-3 or anything from the eighties or early nienties would be AWESOME!
Yeah Simon, me too. Al told me the problem is, other documents he has are in *really* obsolete formats. But I will be working with him to try and figure that out.

I don’t know exactly the requirements and criteria for the daily email (though I suggested before that maybe they should be changed) but there hasn’t been a lot of posts in the past few days either.

(re: No sound ) With a PCI card such as the SB Live!, 16 bits has to be emulated. The earlier Live cards would install the emulation with the DOS drivers. The newer cards no longer have DOS drivers. In XP, to have sound in a DOS application or game, direct hardware access has to be emulated.
XP has very limited sound card support for this. The best way to add sound to your old DOS games in XP is with VDMSound. VDMS is free and works like a charm, just be sure to also install the VDMS Launchpad as well.

(re: Size / Format Discussion) Just wondering if anyone has thought of doing this in .pdf format? It would be easy to read and the colors/resolution is wonderful. Shipping etc would be cheaper on a CD too.

I think it is the only game I ever bought on the box art alone. Reminds me of the old days with records when the cover could sell the album.  some of them were works of genius

    (Re: Sierra Logo)

I’ve been considering (re-)constructing the Sierra logo(s) in 3D Studio MAX, so that they could be rendered at any size anyone wanted and look nearly perfect. They could also be extruded and given 3D form, or manipulated endlessly in terms of color or whatever you want. Personally I’d like to see the half-dome logo nicely and simply rendered on the front page of this site. Then we could also have larger and clearer illustrations for the person who did that logo history / collection post (I forget who it was).

    (re: No sound )

this is not necessarily an XP problem, but a CPU problem. when you launch the game, a test is done to detect the sound card. on faster machines, the test is done too quickly for the game to register that you have a sound card. so, you get the message that it can’t be detected.

try the Go Sierra patch (link below). it fixes this problem with a lot of games — but XP has its own set of problems with old games, so you may still run into some other issues.

Yes, you need to download Reader 5.0 to see them. 4.0 is pretty old.

hmm. i tried downloading them and acrobat reader wouldn’t read them – said it didn’t recognize the file format, even though the files were showing up as .pdf.

i have acrobat 4.0 — anyone know if i need to download 5.0 to read these? has anyone else been able to read them? i had the same problem with Freddy Pharkus and Torin’s Passage. couldn’t view them from within my browser either.

Strange? I think not. We’d have to worry if Windows IE would work better than Apple’s Safari 🙂

    Wow! Awesome stuff!!!

This is fantastic. Not only from an historical point of view is it interesting to see this, but it gives you a unique insight into the working process of a Sierra game designer. I guess each designer had their own way of doing it though, so I’d love to see someone else following up on this. For me personally, the golden treasure at the end of the rainbow would be an actual King’s Quest design document! 🙂

    (re: Kings Quest VII:Not Working)

Version 2 (supporting Windows) was released as a stand-alone game, in a Sierra Originals budget version, on the second King’s Quest Collection (not the 15th Anniversary one) and on the Roberta Williams Anthology. So unless you are one of those people who picked up a copy right at the time this game was released and never bought any of the releases I mention, you should definately have version 2.0, supporting both DOS and Windows. I think you’re more likely to get the Windows version to look. It’s more a matter of case-to-case with SCI1 games (the ones with VGA graphics) but the SCI-32 games like KQ7 are more Windows-friendly and should be possible to get running in XP etc.

    (re: Kings Quest VII:Not Working)

I have a standalone CD, containing DOS and Windows (i can’t actually remember which I played on XP, i think it was the Windows version). Copyright 1994. According to the Version file on my CD it is version 2.00b.

So yes, there is at least one standalone version out there that runs on XP.

    🙂 emily
