(re: Christmas design & picture) Actually …
There’s a bit of a story to that photo.
We have NO pictures from our younger days. We had a fire in our home, in Coarsegold, that destroyed EVERYTHING. Luckily the kids, and babysitter got out just in time. We were in San Francisco at a computer show when we got the call. From the first ten years of our marriage, we have no photos whatsoever. Roberta was at her parents for Thanksgiving and talked her mom out of that picture long enough to scan it.
Roberta and I had already been “dating” for two years when we got married, four days after I turned 18. Roberta looks darn close now to how she looked then, over 30 years ago. I on the other hand seem to have “grown”. Argh.

    (re: re: Possible bugfix)

DosBOX is not for you – simply because it emulate DOS and old-computer enviroment, intended mainly for Win2000/XP.

By the way, the CD (speech) version of QFG4 is more debugged than the Floppy version, that’s why you’re experiencing less problems.

Are you sure you’ve done everything you’re supposed to?
As far as I remember, in order to be able to get to the sacrifice matter, you need to talk with Magda (the Gypsey elder woman) a couple of times, as well as learn about this from Erana, including knowing that “Ritual of Release” spell, and meeting with Toby and Tanya in their room a couple of times. For that, you should have got the doll, after meeting and helping the Domovoi. Your character should also learn about Tanya from the inn-keepers. (you should be waken up in the middle of the night, +talk with them)… if all that doesn’t help (and try to go back with saved games and do it) … another thing that matters is when you do things… so sometimes just restarting (fresh) with the character helps to solve problems… from experience!

Is it just me, or is that game description really hard to follow?!

Shivers II and Time Warp of Dr. Brain were both released. I haven’t played them (I have Time Warp on my shelf though), so I can’t say if they’re 3D rendered.

    (re: Possible bugfix)

Is this fix for the floppy version or the CD version of QG4? I had problems in the swamp with the floppy version but went right through in the CD version. I just never seem to beat the fairys, playing as the Wizard in the floppy version. And in the CD version, playing the same role, I can never get the subject of sacrifice to come up when I give Tanya her doll. I have done everything that I am supposed to. In all the other roles, I have had no problems. Can anyone help on this. I have a computer set up with DOS 6.2 to run all of the Sierra Adventure games. They were great and still are.

(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I found the problem! It was a speed problem, but ironically the game was running too slow and not too fast.
I found this at Sierra’s KnowledgeBase:
    “Problem:
Lockup at beginning of chapter 5

    Solution:
Turn the Speed slider control (located in the control panel) all the way up prior to the end of Day 4. The Speed control is unavailable during the ending sequence of Day 4 and the beginning of Day 5, so it may be necessary to restore to a previous save game to do this.

Note: Move the control towards the right to turn it up and to the left to turn it down.”
It worked like a charm! Thanks, Sierra, for still having tips around about the older games also.

(Cloak: The Naked Mind) I’m still working on my list o’ stuff… soon I’ll add the entire contents list for each InterAction Magazine I have, I’m sure that could be helpful as an index.
Anyway, there was a blurb about Cloak in the Summer 1996 issue – maybe there was more said in another issue, but I don’t think there was in any of the other issues I have. I think this must be a game that was cancelled. It’s in the “Coming Attractions – Sneak-a-Peek” section of the magazine. It’s a small 1/3 page article showing two rendered images, a screenshot and a close-up. Also on the same 2-page spread are Shivers II and The Time Warp of Dr. Brain (also both 3D rendered games – did either of those games release?) I would just scan it for you, but I still haven’t replaced my scanner – I’m going to do that on Boxing Day 🙂
So here’s the next best thing, the blurb. It’s probably the one you remember seeing. Like I said, this game must have been cancelled. There’s no way the present-day Sierra is going to revive a 7-8 year old concept – if it was cancelled, there was probably a good reason – so the developers of the game (whoever they are) aren’t likely to ressurect the concept either.

    Cloak: The Naked Mind
This high-tech adventure game is being called a cross between Star Trek and James Bond, though we think that’s way too stupid of a description to really give you a feel of how cool Cloak is going to be. At the start of the game, your home world of Altopia has recently set up trade relations with a strange telepathic race nicknamed the Bulbs for their big-brained noggins. The Bulbs’ rapidly developing technology and mental abilities have left the Altopians feeling ill at ease. Can the Bulbs not only see into minds, but manipulate them? Do they have plans to develop weapons and destroy or enslave your people? As an agent for the Interformation Gathering Agency, it is your job to find out. Using a telepresence pod, you can project your consciousness into a robot on the Bulbs’ home planet while keeping your mind safe at home and inaccessible to the Bulbs. Can you discover what the Bulbs are up to before you are found out?
Cloak: The Naked Mind combines all the exciting plot twists and high-tech gadgetry of a spy thriller with the futuristic space-travel environment of science fiction. It makes for a compelling new genre that you’re gonna love. Cloak is due to arrive in players’ hands in the spring of 1997.

(re: re: Gabriel Knight 1) Have you tried running it in DOSBox? DOSBox will take care of all the timing bugs.

If the crash is occuring on both win98 and XP, maybe it is a game problem that can be patched? Have you applied any patches?

Sierra’s ftp site lists what appear to be three patches for GK1. They are

    gkcdpat.exe
    gkerr407.exe
    gkpat.exe

Maybe one (or more) of these will help. Link to the ftp site is below.

Unfortunately, with most of Sierra’s DOS games, the saves won’t be recognized once you’ve applied the patch (because the patch changes the version of the executable). Maybe you can find an explanation online somewhere of what these patches are supposed to do, so you can find out before you apply them if they’re intended to fix crashes like the one you’re experiencing.

(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I’m not using VDMSound, so that’s not the issue anyway. I haven’t tried slowing the game down yet, but I’ll give it a try.
I’m pretty far past the point that, I think, you’re talking about. There’s 10 days in the game and I’m at the beginning of day 5, so I still have pretty much left to play, but it’s so much fun that I don’t want the game to end anyway.
I have the 1.0 version, which you probably don’t have so no luck there either I guess. But I’ll try to slow down the game and see if that does the trick.
Thanks very much for the help, emily!

    (re: re: Gabriel Knight 1)

Wow… I didn’t know you could play the DOS version under XP! (I could never get it to work.)

Are you using VDMSound? If yes, try playing the game without it just so you can get through the point with the crash. I had to do this in a few places with the DOS version of GK2.

Have you tried slowing down the game with Turbo or Moslo? If it’s a speed issue, that should help. (I never got this far in the game, I don’t think… are you past the part with the beignet guy at the police station yet?)

What version of the game do you have? The DOS games are very particular when it comes to versions, so it might work better if you can find someone who has the same version as you who can load up your saved game, play through that spot, and send it back to you. I have the GK Mysteries version and will happily load it up on win98 to help you out, if that’s the version you have too.

(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I’m playing the DOS version under WIN XP right now and everything seems to work fine, except for one thing: The game locks up at the beginning of day 5 just when the phone rings. I’ve tried to play under both WIN XP and 98 and exactly the same thing happens every time. I’m starting to wonder if the problem lies in the game itself, maybe there’s something wrong with the version I have.
But of course this could be a speed problem also, I’m just not sure what the problem is, but I’ll continue to try different things to try to get the game to work.
Meanwhile I would be very grateful if someone could send me a savegame from the beginning of day 5 or show me a site that has GK1 savegames.
    Thanks!

(re: King’s Quest 6 voice actors)

Thanks for the help guys! Together we might eventually be able to scrape together bits and pieces to form a decent credits list. 🙂

I recently collected voice samples for every character in the game for reference to the voice actor auditions for the KQ9 fangame that’s soon to be held. You can tell from the voices that many actors played several characters. The full cast list is probably not very long.

Josh Mandel recently mentioned in an interview at Ugarte’s Dimension of Fantasy that he played the genie (Shamir Shamazel) in KQ6, which was a surprise to me. I’m sure I recognise his voice as one of the druids and Oxymoron as well. Josh, since you check in here from time to time, if you’re reading this, do you remember any more voices you did for KQ6 and who did some of the other parts? Who played Cassima for instance?

After a bit of sleuthing, I found out that the voice of the pawnshop owner was David Fennoy. Turns out that Fennoy voiced King Andre in Monkey Island 3, and someone on the LucasArts boards casually commented something like “oh yeah, I remember the guy who played King Andre from the pawnshop owner’s voice in KQ6!”

Which makes me wonder: how the heck do those LucasArts fans know more about Sierra games than the Sierrans themselves!? It’s just not FAIR…

Over the weekend I picked up a floppy disk version of Police Quest: Open Season in a box. (Yes, it was another good weekend… I also got a shrinkwrapped SQ1 VGA!) I originally had PQ4 for the Mac, which was on CD, so the box was much slimmer. I did a double-take when I saw that HUGE box in the store!

I don’t remember the UPS cartoon, but I do remember an easter egg in (I think?) Space Quest 4, where Roger comes across a King’s Quest game in a bargain bin at the mall… something along the lines of King’s Quest: Quest for the Missing Floppies. Anyone remember this?

I don’t know, but at some point I will probably need to. I have an nvidia GeForce 2.

I think the version of RAMA I tried installing last week was a Windows version, not DOS. (aren’t VESA drivers only for DOS?) Still, I didn’t get it working under Windows anyway.

(re: Duplication) I don’t remember the drawing you are referring to – but, I do remember duplicating disks – by the thousands. Roberta and I copied personally at first, then hired neighborhood kids, then starting hiring lots of people to duplicate disks. It was a MAJOR job. We also wrote programs to read back in the disks, to verify that they were duplicated correctly.
We always talked about outsourcing duplication – but, never did it. We couldn’t replicate the quality or pricing of doing it ourselves.

(re: re: re: problem with the layout)

I am using IE 5.1. The menu items have been shifted down ever since you went to this layout (I don’t remember exactly when that was, but I posted about it at the time). It wasn’t a problem before because the text was black, so I was still able to read them even though they were shifted down from the gray bar.

I also have Netscape 7.0 on this machine and I just checked — the layout is correct on that browser. So it’s probably just an IE problem.

Are the menu items in the right place on the normal (black) layout?
I noticed on Roberta’s dad’s iMac that on Explorer the shifting you are seeing was there — but, not on Safari.

(re: Rights to Quest for Glory Series) Anyway, I have thought for years that the original Hero’s Quest would make a great movie, and I was wondering who owned the rights to that material, if it was you guys or Vivendi Universal, the Two Guys from Andromeda or the Wizards at W.I.T. Any info you guys could send along the way would be great. Once again, thank you for all the years of solid gaming excitement.

My belief is that Vivendi holds the rights to Hero’s Quest.
We had problems with the name Hero’s Quest, and had to change the name. I forget who it was, but a board game company went after us saying that we were infringing the trademark for their boardgame, so we renamed the series to Quest For Glory.
I am convinced that had we left the name as Hero’s Quest it would have sold twice as well.
    Thank you!
