(re: re: InterAction Mag. (“Volume 3”))

I don’t have my master Interaction list here at work, but I can tell you this :

I recently acquired a Summer 96 Mag with Randy Johnson, so I DO NOT need that.

I DO need the Volume 1 #1 (Cranston Manor) scanned from cover to cover.

I DO need Volume #3 scanned from cover to cover.

I DO need the Spring 1998 Magazine scanned from cover to cover – no one I have ever come in contact with has this one.

I DO need the Holiday 1998 Front and Back Cover.
    ——

If you can get the whole magazines on the ones I need scanned – that would be great – otherwise I will just get Ken to send them up when the heavy interaction scanning starts. Thanks! How much longer are you there for?

(re: InterAction Mag. (“Volume 3”)) Brad, looks like I should be able to work it into my schedule / work load. Let me just clarify which ones you need from Ken’s list. Let me know if you don’t need one of these, and also if you need anything else from Ken’s list.
Volume 1 Number 1, “Volume 3”, Summer 1996 Alternate Cover, Holiday 1998 Alternate Cover

    wow, that’s great!

I wonder if it also helps with the police station bug in GK1. I was never able to get past that, even using MoSlo.

    I’ll definitely check this out!

    Brandon,

Yes I do not have this one – if you can scan it that would be great. I believe Tom @ Quest Studios has this one, but it would be good if you could just scan it while you are there. Thanks. Sorry I haven’t check email in a few days – I just got you message about the scanner and such. Christmas kept me so incredibly busy I think I touched a computer just once. Happy holidays bud!

(re: KQ6 Opening Movie) Here’s a fun bit of trivia, although it pertains to the opening cartoon to Kings Quest VII, not Kings Quest VI.
I wanted to do something really blow-away and decided to contact Pixar to see if they would be willing to do the opening for KQ7. Pixar was a company formed by Steve Jobs (formerly and currently of Apple) to do major animated films. My memory is that at the time Toy Story, their first film, had just been released or was nearing release.
To my surprise, I got an almost immediate call back from Steve Jobs himself. We had met a few times back at the birth of the industry, but had never really said more than a few words. He was in a very talkative mood, and it wound up being a half hour chat about a wide range of topics. Unfortunately, Pixar was well beyond having any interest in charging me a few hundred grand to do a short animated film, so nothing ever came of it – but, it was fun getting a brief audience with one of the most creative and interesting people of our time.

(re: InterAction Mag. (“Volume 3”)) The one you have listed as “Vol 3 KQ3 ships for Apple” did you mean Vol 1 #3? And you are for sure that it is Spring 1988? It would seem like #3 would be 3rd Quarter, or Fall.
Brad, for sure it is simply labelled Volume 3 and it is Spring 1988. Here’s the cover. Let me know if you need this one scanned ASAP and I’ll see if I have time.

The PC-CD DOS-version comes with another version of the movie. It’s like an abridged version of the AVI one, but with different voice actors.

Thanks, Brandon. Not as much to it as some of the others, but it was the only one I did not have and it is nice to finally see it. If I get some time this coming week, I will work some more on the COTLB manual and SQ5 Hintbook. I have quite a few manuals that I might get around to scanning.

OK here’s the KQIV one. I didn’t touch it, no color correction, no cloning-out of defects, nothing. I only tried to make each set of pages straight (I based it off the left page, so that means sometimes the right page is going to be a bit crooked because they’re not perfect). Anyway, let me know what you think.

It’s almost a 14 meg file for 10 pages – each page was between 500-600 kb. Each page was 300 DPI but saved low quality, JPG level 3. I think it prints well. In a way I prefer no level correction, because then you get the feel of the real manual where the pages are actually thin enough to see through. If everyone screams though, I’ll do a basic level correction to make the slightly-darker background slightly lighter (making the background tone a bit truer, and eliminating a bit of the see-through).

The manual is printed on a textured paper that is a yellowish cream color. I suppose it was meant to resemble parchment. The colors are fairly accurate to my manual.

Looks great! The pages don’t look yellow on my machine.

You must have put a lot of work into this… those speckled pages were like that so they couldn’t be easily copied. Maybe that’s why the production value went down for the CD release — they didn’t expect people to pirate CDs, so it was less important to have pages that couldn’t be reproduced.

(re: Let’s make it more comfortable.) What do you think that system has, that we don’t have here? If you give me a list of specific features, I’ll add it to my “to do” list (which actually does get smaller from time to time).
This system is a hobby for me. I do have goals that over time it will become the best system on the market — but, my programming staff is small (me), and my QA staff is even smaller (me).
Those who have been here for a while will tell you that the site has improved dramatically over the past year, and you will see that same level of evolution over the next year.
Generally, I’ve tried to avoid spending too much time studying other systems. I’ve always hated product development which uses its basis as building a better version of what existing programs do. I watch this system closely, and more importantly, I’m a user of the system. I add those features that I want, or that users of the system seem to want. I refine features that people seem confused about, and kill features that people aren’t using.
    Enjoy!

Great job of editing those pages and making them all nice for the PDF. Probably a good quality / size balance for this site. The pages seemed overly yellow though? But all around, good work. I moved it into the Museum area.

(re: KQ III and IV) Probably cheaper. In fact, you’d be surprised just how many little variations there are between Sierra releases… I don’t even mean classification of releases by their major actual different releases. For example, vintage-sierra lists 2 versions of KQ3 I think. Well, I have a sub-version of KQ3’s second release, where the manual doesn’t have the blue border on the front, instead the border is just black. Why? Cheaper to print again probably. That’s assuredly not the only reason things were changed… but often there were sub-versions like this where little things got changed. Anyway, it sure would make an interesting study, but sadly I’m sure no such records exist and we can’t count on the helpfulness of all collectors to tirelessly document their stuff.
Woohoo! New scanner tomorrow! I can’t wait. If anyone reads this before tomorrow morning, tell me what you think of this one. The one thing I wish was more common was a larger scanning area for over-sized material.

(re: re: KQ III and IV)

Thanks, I went over to vintage-sierra and saw what you were talking about. That’s weird that they’d resize the manual like that when it wasn’t even intended as a CD insert. I wonder why that choice was made? (Could have been cheaper to print at that size…)
