Thanks to all for the feedback. I’m going to try to get an LAPC-1, just to save hassle (and, perhaps, money).
This oughta be trippy once I get it going…

Just as a response to Ken’s side note I would like to point out that now would be a great time to check out the Mexican weather if you live in the Seattle area. This winter is quite a bit cooler than usual. Plus, none of us know how to drive in the snow.

Participant“Any remembrance why you chose the name Lisa for your compiler? Did Jobs have a some compilers named DJ or Chris? =) Was it an acronym?”
My memory is starting to come back on this….
The assembler was written by Randy Hyde, and was already on the market before Sierra picked it up. I used it to write a game (I think Thexder) and liked it, so I called to ask if we could publish it. My recollection is that it was already called Lisa, and that it was called that because it was named after Randy’s wife — but, this was 25 years ago, so, who knows?
I don’t remember why we stopped publishing it. I think I always wanted to move the company in serious directions, but ultimately, our product direction was always set by our customers, not me. We tended to do more of what worked, and less of what didn’t. The games worked, the compilers didn’t.

ParticipantFunny you should mention this, because Al and I found a “Lisa” newspaper cartoon from 1983. We threw it away though, otherwise it would have been appropriate to post it right now!

Joanne Takahashi has 2 lines in the movie “The Late Shift” in the very beginning as a waitress. When I first saw it I only was watching it to see her part, but its actually a pretty good movie, about Jay Leno and David Letterman trying to get the hosting job for the Tonight Show. Unfortunately, she was also in a episode of a soft-porn tv show on Showtime. Luckily theres a scene with her fully clothed you can watch. I keep seeing Mrs. Smith in a ton of commercials as well, a insurance one being the only one I remember. Peter Lucas was also in the TV-Movie of Into Thin Air based on the book about people who died on Mount Everest as a pretty boy-type guide.

ParticipantLisa was the name of his first daughter.
While it was a commercial flop it gave birth to the Macintosh which was a scaled down Lisa in some ways.
Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantInteresting! I’d always heard that the Lisa was named after his daughter.

Participant(MT-32 ROM)
The MT32 ROM is available on the internet as part of the VDMSOUND project below.
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/stuff/MT32_PCM.zip
There is some legal issues surrounding this ROM but since the MT32 family is no longer in production and Roland no longer uses LA synthesis I really don’t see what the problem is.

Heh, do we owe him a big favour or should we just be envious? Anyway, Brandon, looking forward to the “stuff” you’ve unearthed.

Participant(re: Hmmm .. I wonder why?) I was looking at the stats today too and I thought to myself, “this must be a bug.” For example, in the recorded space of only 2 minutes, the entire website history page (only viewable by admin) was filled with only Visitor: Just Logged In. It struck me as very odd.
As for the visit I made down to Seattle, it was my pleasure, and as Ken said there will indeed be plenty of cool things appearing here. I’ve probably gone crazy from scanning now, last night when I got home, the only thing I dreamt about was scanning all night long!Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: re: re: Computer Sound)
I do know that sound from KQ3 on the IIGS sounded way better than it did on the PC. I remember being pretty upset when the IIGS titles began disappearing around 1991. Luckily, it was quickly replaced with a PC.

I got a copy on eBay a couple years ago, and the price went up high as you said – a lot of people are just trying to find the game, even though it’s used. Mine isn’t in bad shape really, but the CD holder’s been cut up so I’ve been trying to find a new, sealed one – I know they’re out there! Unfortunately, I don’t know where to find a cheap one, other than what many people here I know would suggest – hunt bargain bins. If I can ever find a new copy, I’ll gladly sell (for a reasonably cheap-ish price) my old copy. Same goes for any of my games (as long as they’re identical versions). But if you don’t have luck with bargain bins, as I usually don’t, eBay may be the easiest (but priciest) way. There are also game-trading sites out there, I just don’t know what they are ’cause I don’t use them. Someone will surely post those links for you (but you might find the same price situation as eBay).

Participant(re: re: Johnny Castaway) I don’t know that I can add anything to what has been said, other than….
This was strictly Jeff Tunnel’s baby (well .. with lots of help from Randy Dersham and others). It’s a VERY cool, and fun product – and, Sierra should have taken it more seriously. We sold a ton of copies. I’m not sure why we didn’t upgrade it, and re-release it. I remember at the time hearing that modern LCD screens didn’t need screen savers – but, forgot that sometimes people buy things irrespective of whether or not they have any purpose. Oh well …. this is just one item on a long list of things I would do differently if given the chance.

It was done by Jeff Tunnell (Dynamix). And here is the original file that was freely downloadable from Sierra’s site (but I zipped it up since SierraGamers does not allow EXEs to be uploaded). Be careful, if you just execute the EXE file which is contained in this zip file, it self-extracts to whatever directory it is currently in. Maybe Ken knows more history behind it, if so it’d be cool to hear. I loved this screensaver too. I will sooner or later also have to get in touch with Jeff at which time this is one thing for sure I’ll ask him about. I don’t know if there were different versions, or if this was ever sold in stores, but this is Version 1.01 / Date 2/6/97. If anyone remembers this in stores in a package, let us know!

Participant(re: Running older games)
what problems are you running into?
I haven’t tried these games, but as far as I know you should be able to run the DOS versions. Try using the DOS box within Windows, as well as rebooting to DOS. (But if you reboot to DOS, there may be some drivers you need to install to get the games working.)
Tell us what exactly the problem is, and maybe someone can help you get these working.

Participant(re: re: Older Games/Kings Quest VI)
VDMS only works with XP (so no, it won’t get SQ3 running in win98).
If you’re getting an error running the game with VDMS, you could try running it normally *just* to get past the point you’re having trouble with, then save and go back to playing with VDMS.
I played the DOS version of KQ6 (using VDMS) without running into any problems in the minotaur’s lair. I did crash at least once (Isle of Wonder in the garden), and I was able to restore and play through that spot without it happening again.

Cani use that program to run space quest 3 under my windows 98 ?

Participant(re: re: Running older games on Windows XP)
You are right. Mostly what Compatibility Mode does is just lie to the program about what OS it is and a few other things to address outdated APIs, etc. In most cases the most useful thing about it is the automatic resolution changes.
