(re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: PQ and real police training) Rod, I never knew you were married to Tammy. Of course I never asked about it and it’s not on the net anywhere. You two always used different names so there is no logical connection for non (ex)Sierra/VUG people. Anyways congrats, better late then never. :p And also thanks Tammy for (writing) the great SWAT 3 game 🙂 Kenny Thatcher Jr. in SWAT too, never knew that either, cool. Cool Sierra story, developing games sounds like fun, maybe one day I’ll try it out too. I saw the SWAT movie too, I really liked the beginning, nice and realistic but then planes started to land on bridges and stuff… argh Hollywood… The movie could have been so cool, well at least the beginning was. > “What did the police departments/ SWAT think of those space helmets in SWAT 3 btw Rod?” < > They were fine with it. The idea was inspired from a conversation I had with one of the founding members of LAPD SWAT (the character “Hondo” from the recent SWAT Movie and original TV show is based upon him). His name is Ron McCarthy and he is a real legend within SWAT circles. What was the conversation about then, if it can be made public of course? I always found it weird and it would have been cool if you guys would have also added the regular helmets to choose from. But if the idea was inspired from a conversation with a legend, who am I to argue 🙂 Rod, if you want I can have a look for the “SWAT Generations” pack and send it to you. Just send me a mail. Do you have all the other ones too, like SWAT Career Pack, Police Quest: SWAT Force etc.? – Micha

(re: Sound Problems on a WIN98) You need 16 bit emulation to have sound from old DOS games. Look on the driver disc for your sound card for DOS drivers. If you cannot find them on your driver disc or from the manufacturer’s web site, You might try VDMSound for Windows 9x. This is only in alpha stage of development, but may be your only solution.

    (Learning english with Sierra)

English is not my first language either. I come from a small village north of montrĂ©al also. English in QuĂ©bec is learned as a second language. But thanks to Quest for glory, Leisure suit larry (I’m a perv, what can I say?), King’s quest and all of those fantastic games, I learned to write and speak english properly(you be the judge :)).

It may sound like nothing to people born with the english language. But it completely changes the game experience.

Let’s say I want King graham to pick up a bowl. I need to learn what the word for bowl is, and what I want to do with it. So you try a few sentences until you get the rewarding message ‘You have taken the bowl’. You also get a nice little song on the pc speaker. Figuring out what sentence to use was as much a puzzle as using items on others.

There is no other way I can think of that I could have developed such a fascination for the english written langage.

Nowadays when I finish a game, I know my thumbs are a bit more agile and my eyes a little more tired. Sierra games rewarded the player on so many levels. And the high-quality writing, even though sometimes simplistic, made sure that you could trust these games to be well written.

And I have a confession to make, to me Ken williams was the mayor of Cooltown. I mean, he appeared exactly when I finally thought I was going to see some nakedness in leisure suit larry. That sort of quirkyness is rare in games today I think. And it helped shape the dysfunctional buffon that I am 🙂 Thanx Ken and all who showed me the door into the world of possibilities.

    Hi,

I’m trying to get a good Apple IIe emulator myself, I have an old
Electrifying Adventures game I’m trying to get working. I’ve tried some
emulators but they don’t seem to work right…

Ah well, good luck finding the old Sierra games! 🙂

    Ken,

Are you asking about knowing any sites that contain some old Sierra
    Classics, or emulators?

Well, I had always just pressed view and if it hit where I aimed with really good accuracy I thought it was sighted. I had to type in look at target when it was up close and then told me that my gun was sighted (even though I already knew). So when it told me, I went and beat the game.

(re: Letter from the past – multiplayer adventure game)

I just read that URU Live is being taken down, and the content that was developed for it will be released as expansion packs instead. Apparently they couldn’t support the number of online users they would have needed to to be profitable.

So, I guess there is still no successful model of a multiplayer adventure game…

(re: Sound Problems on a WIN98)

What exactly is the problem? Do you get an error message?

I assume you’ve gone into the Install file and tried all the different soundcard settings?

I have two win98 machines, one’s a P1 (150 Mhz I think?) with a SoundBlaster card, one’s a P2 (366 Mhz) with built-in audio (laptop). I haven’t played all the games on your list, but I know I’ve gotten sound for KQ4, Larry 2, and QfG2. I installed KQ4 and QfG2 before I even knew about the GoSierra patch, so if I had to do any tweaking it was probably with the Install file. Larry 2 may have needed the GoSierra patch, I’m not sure.

Sorry I can’t be more help.

I actually have thought about writing a Java based AGI (or maybe SCI) interpreter, but between school and my other projects, I doubt I would have the time to do anything about it other than get people’s hopes up. Plus, there’s also the nearly self defeating concept of running a virtual machine inside a virtual machine. XD

(re: re: re: Ken: your personal collection of Sierra games)

I think that eaven Ken has no idea of exactly how many of the games he actually owns. And there are collectors that visit this site that have some huge collections altho some of them are more narrow (like SQ only or anything PQ for example)
I personaly have brought up this IMAGING issue on a few sites so its good to know that someone is working on such software.
Let’s get together and start working on a list first and an accurate one then we’ll fill in the gaps of history..

I’m running it on WinME using the latest DosBox version. Mine works fine until I get to the “mini movies” where I can hear no voice coming from the characters BUT if I try to start to play the intro, it plays the voice of Aguirre. That is the only problem I have, otherwise all other sounds are OK.

    Thanks for your answer, Ken!

Has anyone ever heard of Capcom’s upcoming Resident Evil: Outbreak (for Playstation 2)?

I was able to play it on several occasions, and my first impressions are really positive. In my opinion, it has several really cool elements that would be perfect to use in a multiplayer adventure game. First a quick intro: you play online with four people, each player has its own specific character. You’re in a bar when zombies start invading the place. The police officer has a gun, so he can shoot the zombies, while another person searches for a key to get out of the place. Ofcourse, he could just get the key and leave the others to be eaten by the zombies …

Now, that would be possible, but not a smart move (this is the brilliant twist): When a player gets bitten often by a zombie, he turns into one himself. So an infected player can begin haunting the other ‘real’ characters … Not only would the egoĂŻstic player be confronted with more intelligent zombies, he would also have more problems solving the puzzles ahead. He can’t run into a dead end, but some puzzles would take a lot more time without the proper person present. So, every player would act wise to ‘keep the team together’.

All scenario’s are also playable offline. The other 3 persons are computercontrolled in this mode … It’s looking to be quite brilliantly designed, if you ask me …

I’ve had this problem with a sealed copy of the PQ Collection too. Both me and a friend bought a new & sealed copy at a store here in the Netherlands and both collections didn’t contain the manual. I first emailed Sierra’s customer service and they told me to send them a letter with copies of my receipt & CD’s, so I did. I wasn’t expecting anything but a couple of weeks later I received 2 manuals. Now that’s service!

Ken – Have you been following the release of URU? The standalone version was released a few months ago, and I think the online component is now public. I am not a big Myst fan and don’t have broadband — two reasons I’ll probably never try it. But, it’s the first real attempt at a multi-player adventure game. Seems some people are really enjoying it.

(re: Letter from the past – multiplayer adventure game)

i have been trying to figure out this for a long time. i came up with the idea of having the adventure game being just 2 player. the players would have different but equal roles in the adventure. they could do things like explore different parts of the same location and pick up items. then they could meet with each other and manipulate and share each others inventory. being a huge bond fan, i wanted to make it a spy adventure. this way they could be 2 secret agents that can work together to solve a problem. this would give lots of cool posibilities like if one gets caught, the other get them out, or distact a gaurd and the other sneak up behind the gaurd and knock him out. they could also be in constant contact with each other with their walkie talkies, or spy watches like bond, which can now be done thanks to broadband. i havent really thought about it in a while though, but i am a programmer and have a couple of servers and would be willing to make something like this if some others would help, like artists. the only thing i didnt really come up with was what to do about not having another player. like, is there a stupid bot? we all know how they work. or do you only allow multiplayer? can you support any second player, or only the original one that started the story with you? i thought there could be checkpoints where anyone could be swithed with anyone else that was to that checkpoint. i would like everyones thoughts please. i think its a good solid idea. i know everyone was probably thinking about a massive multiplayer, but i dont really see that happening. but 2 or even 3 players is probably possible. i would love to get something going with this idea. please tell me what you all think.

What was the reason to switch later to C++ based development in games like Police Quest 3(?) (the one with video and photo backgrounds)? I got the impression that the game logic was written in C++ (not the game engine) because of some specific error messages during the game. And it looked like you also lost some stability when the switch to C++ was made…
