I should have been more specific with the title. What I was looking for was the Leisure Suit Larry Collection 2, the box with the flap and its kind of long. I have King’s Quest Collection 2 but my parents seem to sometimes not care about my things and trashed the box/manual. They did the same thing with my Space Quest Collection 🙁 I am just trying to get the complete set for them all again. Which kind of sucks because I already had them once lol.

You have to be careful with the “Collection Series” one though (what Adam termed “Collection 2”), since there’s actually 2 printings of it… Al Lowe recently informed me that it was the first printing that contained the book, while the second printing they cheaped out and didn’t include the book. The book incidentally is the Official Book Of Leisure Suit Larry “Special Edition.” I think there were 2 editions of this book previously – does anyone know if it’s basically the same as the 2nd edition? In any case, it is an EXCELLENT book.

Participant(re: Scott Murphy Sighting!!!) It is very cool that you ran into both Mark (Hood) and Scott.
Actually, Space Quest fans have known of Scott’s (bare bones) website and his email address listed on that website for years… but Scott rarely responds to his email and seems reticent about conversing with fans or getting around to doing anything with his website, which is a real shame. So I don’t recommend everyone who didn’t know Scott’s email before now mass email him, as it may tick him off. A few fan emails couldn’t hurt though, and sooner or later, he’s going to have to give in and communicate with the Space Quest fans. If you remember, I did that “Wanted” poster with Frans when Frans, after some communication with Scott, lost touch with him.Unknown,Unknown

I’m sorry I can’t help with PH 2, but can you describe how you got KQ5 running on XP? I got it up and running, but I don’t have any Icons/cursor when I’m playing…I’m playing totally blind…just kinda clicking and seeing where I end up. I have the collection…did you? What did you do to your system to get everything working right?

I haven’t tried it yet, but there is a setup for Phantasmagoria 2 at the link below.

Participant(re: Looking for sierra games) Amazon has nothing to do with price… it’s driven by market forces and if a seller beleives the hype and will actually make any sales at those prices then ‘good luck’ to ’em. There’s also a games trading zone which has equally stupid prices.
eBay is bar far and away the best marketplace for this type of thing. However, you’ll be hunting for a while to find a) what you want – exactly down to boxed, with manuals, etc. b) for the price you’re willing to pay c) choosing the person most likely to complete the sale as stated, etc… It’s far from perfect with far too much end auction sniping for my liking but you can get ‘lucky’.
From the two you listed. Leisure Suit Larry comes in one of 3 collection boxes. Collection 1 which is labelled in Europe as the Collector’s Edition and elsewhere as Greatest Hits & Misses. Collection 2 (bigger box with flap labelled as Collection Series) adds a talkie version of LSL6 and comes with a great book on the series. Collection 3 is the Ultimate Pleasure Pack and includes LSL7 but with no book… The 3rd pack is the most difficult to get hold of and it’s eBay price is usually $120+
King’s Quest is available in one of 5 box sets. 3 are near identical bar some packaging detail. This is the 15th Anniversary set which comes in a box with cool looking embossed text, in a standard slip case box with fairly bland pattern or in a (possibly US only) release with some unusual drawing on it. (Peter’s site may have the box shots!). Like LSL, the KQ collection was also treated to the Collection Series large box set and finally all of the KQ games are included in the Roberta Williams Anthology boxset. All very cool if ya can get one/all of ’em 😉Unknown,Unknown

I am the one that managed to get KQ6 to run on XP.
You’ll need to have VDMSound and the VDMS Launchpad installed on your system to do it, but you will need it to play the older KQ games with audio, anyway.
1) Go to http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ , download VDMSound and the VDMS Launchpad and install both.
2) Go to the KQ6 shortcut in your stary menu and right click on it and choose “Properties”. Copy what is in the “Target:” box and paste it in Notepad. Save it in the games folder as KQ6.bat.
3) Copy the file “RESOURCE.AUD” from the CD to the installed game folder on your hard drive.
4) Open your game’s installed folder on your hard drive and delete the file “HDLOGO.AVI” and open the file “SIERRA.INI” (it may be in a sub-folder named “WIN”) in Notepad. Look for the lines:
audpath=D:
audio=D:
movieplayer=1(Note, yours may be different, depending on what letter drive your CD-ROM is.) Chang this to:
audpath=.
audio=.
movieplayer=05) Right click on the file in the installed folder, “SCIWV.EXE” and go to the Compatibility tab and choose Compatibility mode for Win 98 or Win 95, 256 colors. do the same for the file you made earlier, “KQ6.bat”
6) Now all you have to do is right click on the .bat file you made and choose “♫ Run with VDMS” (the one with the musical notes) and the game should run.
(Note that the audpath=. and audio=. should be =.backslash, but the backslash is not displaying)

I couldn’t get the windows version running on XP. I think it can be done with quite a lot of tweaking. Check Sierra’s forums (http://community.sierra.com) – I think that’s where I read about how to do it.

Thank you! I saw the site, and it’s looking great.
If you click the little icon, in the lower left corner of the edit window, it will show you an HTML window. Just copy, and paste, your HTML into the edit window. I do it all the time.

Participant(re: Half Price Books)
I was tempted to pick up a couple of games yesterday. I almost bought Bass Fishing and a game called Mad Grab just because they were Sierra games… it was like $2 for the fishing game, but I don’t remember it being much fun for me. The other game which looked like a board game conversion was probably $5 but again it didn’t look all that fun.
I did pick up Magic Carpet(EA) for $1 and was surprised to find that it still had the original 3d glasses and it had Magic Carpet 2 stuck inside as well.

I put up a quick demo site (it’s my online portfolio) at http://tschirgi.talkspot.com, but I have a question for Ken:
My main site (which I recently changed the layout for) is over at this location (http://tschirgi.20m.com). Is there a way for me to transfer the HTML to a Talkspot location? The layout was programmed by me in HTML using a lot of tables, so I’m not too sure how to do it with Talkspot’s interface.
Still, I like Talkspot’s easy-to-use interface for simpler web pages. It has the functionality of MS Word with easy to understand icons and a decent tutorial.
Good luck with Talkspot!

Hey guys!
Got a not so much a problem, but an annoyance! I’ve got XP, and am currently trying to play KQ6. Thing is, I can get it to work in Dos (in other words, the dos version), fine sound, but the thing that i want is the improved character portraits during game (ie. the windows version). So far i haven’t been able to get the windows version to work, but the dos is fine. I just want to play it with cool portraits…any ideas?
I’ve got the collectors edition (first 6 kq’s), if that puts a spin on things..??argh..help!

Participant(re: re: When did the ‘demise’ start?) My opinion on KQ8 (and I always have alot of opinions) is that it failed because it didn’t have mouse movement. In an adventure\fps mix one has to be able to turn quickly and fire. Having to use the arrow keys to turn and fire, caused one to be inaccurate. It is hard to turn to the right direction and be on target. This just adds to the frustration. It is also tiring to have to use both hands all the time.
And I still think having that rape scene in Phantasmagoria was a mistake. Never ever mix horror and sex, or violence and sex.Unknown,Unknown

Participant(re: Sierra then vs. Sierra now) “…By the way, does anyone know how long Sierra has owned the license to games on Tolkien’s series?…”
Just as the company was being sold (1996) I remember that our Oakhurst office was negotiating for the rights to Lord of the Rings (or, was it the hobbit?) The deal wasn’t done yet when I left the company, so I’m not sure what happened…

Download the Quest for Glory Anthology manual from http://www.replacementdocs.com/ It has what you want.

Participant(re: QG4 copy protection) Can you give me an example of the copy protection “question”? It’s been awhile since I played it – I went through my QFG4 manuals, and I didn’t see anything that directly referenced Dr. Cranium’s formulas.

It has been a bit quiet around here today – actually it has been kinda quiet around here for the past week it seems. Guess we are all back at work after the holidays, which come to think of it has already been close to a month and a half ago – where in the world does time go?

Participant(re: The Sierra Value Packs) Well here are the ones I have in my personal collection :
Value Packs:
#1 King’s Quest II, Mixed up Mother Goose, Space Quest I
#2 Space Quest II, Helicoptor Simulator, Thexder
#3 Hoyle I, Police Quest II, Manhunter II
Value Packs 3in1:
#1 A-10 Tank Killer, Hoyle I, Space Quest III
#2 Oil’s Well, Stellar 7, Thexder Firehawk II
Other Collections:
Adventure Starter Kit: Space Quest I, Leisure Suit Larry, King’s Quit (VGA Remakes)
Action Five: Slipheed, Zeilard, Thexder, Thexder Firehawk II, Oil’s Well
Family Fun Pack: Robin Hood, Gobliiins, Hoyle III
Sierra’s Award Winners: King Quest V, Red Baron, Rise of the Dragon
Multimedia Value Pack: Lost in Time, Gobliins, Inca
Those are the “older collections” – there are some newer ones that Sierra has published I have a few of the newer ones, but have not made an effort to acquire all of those. The ones listed I consider “classic” – the standard sized sierra slipcover box (some the regular size thickness – some “jumbo”).
Sierra also released a few other collections over their time span, that were specific to a particular game. For instance Space Quest (which I think has had the most collections released – need to check with Frans) has a Trilogy (already mentioned by another poster) Quadrillogy (is that a word?) several 1-5 collections, and a 1-6 collection. There is also a “classic” Leisure Suit Larry 1-3 collection, and a few others I can’t remember off the top of my head – I’ll have to go back and look in my collection.
If you need any other specifics, just let me know.

I have the “Adventure Game Starter Pack” Value Pack, I don’t have a pic, (or a scanner, doh!) But it includes the “VGA Remakes” of King’s Quest 1, Space Quest 1, and Police Quest 1.
I know there was a “Space Quest Trilogy” Three packer as well.

Brandon, I do much the same as you do, but for convenience I made the following batch file:
@echo off
dir %1/-p /o:gn> “%temp%\directory.txt
notepad “%temp%\directory.txt”I named it “Print Directory.bat” and dropped it in my “SendTo” folder. Now when I need to generate a file list, all I have to do is right click on the floppy drive -> Send To -> Print Directory.bat and automatically get my text file.

Participant(re: Why not DVD)
It’s a chicken and egg thing though — DVD games aren’t made because there aren’t enough people with DVD drives for them to sell (or, so say the developers). But people don’t bother getting DVD drives because there are almost no DVD games available.
You say games aren’t limited by what fits on a CD… games actually seem to come on fewer CDs now than they used to. 1-3 CDs seems to be the norm, when some games were coming on 5-7 CDs in the 90s. Is it because of the trend away from FMV? Are 3D graphics more “portable”?
The jump from floppies to CDs was inevitable. Just look at how many floppies your games were delivered on in the early 90s. I’m just curious why this trend didn’t continue — with games outgrowing CD capacity. (Maybe it’s just that budgets for adventure games were slashed around the same time, and game makers couldn’t afford to put out such large games?)
