I’m a simple user (reply to Josh), and I’ve actually never had a pop-up since ’99, thanks to some VB programming and using Notepad to manipulate codes. However, I’ve always liked Mozilla’s stuff 😀
I once shut-off phone service to 23,000 lines in Vegas when I made a wrong switch on a Unix system. Somehow, I convinced Sprint to switch to O/S 2 Warp at the main NV HQ building, then I resigned to do my own thing.
If your in Vegas and get bad phone service . . .

Oh, don’t worry about, Ken. The Mac my fiancee uses is so old (System 7.5, made in 1995).
On iMacs and the G series everything works great, but we’re also using IE on those.
Thanks, though!

I didn’t even think about using regular HTML. Okay, I can work with that. I completely understand what you’re saying about non-IE users. There aren’t many, but I think you will all be swayed from the dark side eventually. 🙂 Personally, I don’t know how I put up with the internet before I started using Firefox. No pop-ups, very few ads, tabs instead of windows, themes…you’re missing out. 😉 Thanks for the reply Ken!

Anything for the mission!
Just let me know!

This could be a team effort. I have a few Sierra Magazines and InterAction magazines lying around in excellent condition that I am willing to scan. I’m sure others do to.
It’s a lot of work, true, but if there’s enough people doing it, it shouldn’t be a big deal…

If extra help was needed, I can provide some assistance in the form of layout – I have a degree in Graphic Design and extensive experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark. Since the goal is probably to make this an interactive CD, you would also need someone who is familiar with Flash (most economical way to my knowledge for creating interactive CD’s).
While I don’t know Flash, I’m pretty sure someone else on this board might…
I can also assist in CD burning. If demand is reasonable, I can pop out 100 CD’s a day and all they would need is a good CD label to make it look professional. I can assist in the design of the label as well as the jewel-case artwork (front and back).
Just shoot me an email if I can help. 😉

Participant(re: re: Posting System / Compatibility) Let me know what trouble you are having on a Mac … especially if you can send me a screenshot — and, I’ll fix it. I don’t know of any existing bugs on Mac, other than you can’t use the advanced editor.

Participant(re: Posting System / Compatibility) Good idea Joshua…
Statistically, I don’t think I have many non-IE visitors to the website. My sense is that it’s somewhere around 2% of the traffic. Of that 2%, only about 5% want to do fancy formatting — so, with 3,500 users, we have 70 Mac users, of which about 3.5 want to do fancy formatting.
In other words, this is something I should fix — but, it really doesn’t affect many people. My inclination is to just document a subset of HTML, rather than adding the support you are suggesting. That said, I want to think about it for a few days. What you suggested is MUCH better than HTML — it’s just that it requires code, and I’m swamped now, and it doesn’t affect many people — so, I’ll think about it and then decide what to do.
For now, if you want to boldface, surround the text with <b>sample text</b>, and for colors, try this: <font color=red>sample text</font>
Good luck!

My cousin at Microsoft is curious why people stray from their products.
I’m reading something old to see how Mozilla (I don’t work for MS, never will 😉 can be tweaked with a home-made code to work better with IE features.
Your onto something, too. I have trouble with this site on my fiancee’s Mac, since it uses some Apple browser I never seen before. Then again, I’m not a Mac person.

Participant(re: King’s Quest 5 problem)
go to programs
go to accessories
go to command prompt
install the CD via D:\INSTALL.EXE (or whatever your CD drive letter is)
INSTALL the game like a good ol’ DOS Sierra game
For sound, you may have to choose adlib with no speech. maybe, it differs from PC to PCif that doesn’t work, Virtual PC, create a DOS partition or something, and download any patches suggested
If all else fails, emulate! Get a DOS emulator (don’t ask) and emulate DOS 5 w/ VGA and a SoundBlaster setting or emulate the NES version of the game, or Amiga, or Macintosh or something. Though, once we leave the beautiful CD version, we run into inferior, but still gun, versions.

high-res box scans are mainly used for making copies or replacing copies of the game that have been destoryed or whatever. since most books and prints are printed at 300 DPI @ 133 LPI, the internet (at around 72 DPI @ ZERO LPI) is horrible for boxes, and reading the boxes if printed out

Hey Ken, I’ve got a suggestion / question for you.
So, I’m using Mozilla FireFox as my primary browser. I realize that this means I can’t use the fancy editor. But is there a way for the rest of us to format text? And if there is, would you be able to put a “Help with Text Markup” link or something on the posting page?
Or, on the more complicated side, why not ditch the Office dependency and implement a simple markup language for text? See the attached image from GameTZ.com for an example. It’s easy to use regardless of browser.

OK – I confess to being ignorant .. what’s a B&M Museum?
Thank you for the offer of help. It’s the wrong time for me to be thinking about this. I’ve got 30 things going, and don’t want distracted from all the distractions I’m already dealing with. I’ve gotten a few emails and postings on this topic.
To make a long story short, when it comes time to think this thought (which is later, not sooner), here’s the big picture of what I’ll be thinking:
My hope is that some entrepreneur will come to me with a plan to do a museum, preferably in the tourist part of Seattle. The museum would be interactive, in that visitors would be able to play for at least a few minutes the games from 20 years ago — and, it would not be limited to Sierra — I’d love to get old memorabilia from all the video and computer game companies. I would provide the seed capital (I’m thinking small – like under $50,000). From this, they would hopefully create something that could last for a long time, and grow over time — and, be able to feed themselves, and perhaps another employee or two. Seattle has lots of tourists, and if this were done correctly, I could see it being mildly popular.
Once again though… please don’t write me on this until much later in the year. Currently I’m caught in a loop and seem to be accomplishing nothing. If I were a computer, someone would need to reboot me.

Participant(re: Preserving Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash) John was the one that helped me with the information on Drash that I have on my site.
He even put to rest the rumor of all unsold Drash’s being destroyed and buried in Yosemite!
Vincent – I have played my copy, didn’t really like the game but I have played it. For those of you wanting to play it there was a port for the PC made recently. I am sure you can find it by google’ing “Mt. Drash PC port.”
I don’t really understand people’s desire to have high resolution scans of boxes, manuals, disks, etc… Pehaps someone can clue me in. I would be happy to do this with all my games but I wouldn’t distribute them, so it seems kind of like a waste of time.
Ken – I would be happy to help you with a B&M Museum, just let me know what I can do.

I believe you when you say you would do the scans – but it’s a LOT of work. As I know well – a lot of work doesn’t scare you.
See if you can find a way to subcontract this work somewhere in Vancouver, and what it would cost. Within reason, I’ll pay it. The key issue is to scan at a compromise resolution, such that the result can fit on a reasonable number of CDs.
The market for these CDs isn’t big — I doubt that more that a hundred would sell – even at $29. You are welcome to this money if you can get it. Even with outsourced scanning, there will be a lot of work to do to assemble the CD.

I have not heard from Brad, who had assumed responsibility for this project, for some time. Last I heard, he was very busy with work, but was negotiating a price with a guy from Kinko’s to contract the job out, and then to have Ken approve the price. I don’t think that ever happened. Besides Ken, I think Brad has the most complete collection of magazines. He did upload one test issue already to this site, you’ll find it in a post in this area. If we don’t hear from him anytime soon, when I’m free from university during the summer I’ll have lots of time to do work for this site, and that will include doing Interaction Magazine / Sierra Newsletter scans.

Participant(re: Preserving Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash) Yeah, wow – that bid sure went high. About the most I’ve paid for an item so far was $50 USD for KQV NES sealed.
I myself am currently working to acquire sealed copies of all of Sierra’s games (but none pre-King’s Quest) for the book project I envision my efforts turning to. One thing the book would have would be “museum”-style product shots of the sealed items. If you’ve seen the book “Peanuts – The Art of Charles M. Schulz,” or the book “High Score!,” or any of the “The Art Of” books for the Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings movies, those are some of the design influences on me as I am working towards starting this in the summer.Unknown,Unknown

Participant(re: Preserving Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash) I have my goofy personal museum. But I’ve had a vision of a museum in two parts. One part is a like any other museum, with exibits and such, but very high-tech, like a video demo on an LCD screen going at all times above the game’s stuff. The other is a spiral hallway going up at 5 stories, with arcade machines and computers lining the walls of this museum. It would be lighted by the monitors, and the machines would all be rebuilt to look like the PS2 demo units Sony and Samsung sent everybody in 2000.
If you get a copy of the Namco Museum collections on the old PlayStation (not the re-releases on the newer consoles) and some of those Midway retro collections (also on the old PlayStation), there’re some ideas there. The Namco discs each have a special 3-D museum designed as part of the game, with exibits and stuff. I think you might like it, though the emulation is little awkward.
Lastly, for the Ultima II thingy on eBay . . . more power to whoever bought it. I think I’ll stick to my Ultima Collection disc with all Ultimas (except Underworld series) from 0-8, with all the extras. I do understand, though, especially with Ultima, that there’s no substitute for all the goodies, but, eh, I just love to play games!Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Preserving Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash) That is amazing!!!
Sooner or later, I hope to put together a computer/video game “museum” in Seattle, with all the old games and computers to play them – as well as any old memorabilia I can find.
I won’t have the time to focus on this until at least the end of the year, but it’s on the list of projects I’d like to do. The key issue will be finding someone who is passionate about the idea, and who has a long-term vision for the museum. I can provide some items, and the industry connections that will allow this person to find more stuff – and, the seed capital.
At that time, I’ll be a bidder in these kinds of auctions – but, for now, if I bought anything it would just go into the storage locker along with all the other stuff that is in there.
