(Ken: meeting you and Roberta (was re: re: Ken : The new picture))

    Hi Ken,

Since I suppose you will start your trip from the south of France, would you accept that I meet you and your wife for a brief chat?

I’d be glad to have one of my PCjr King’s Quest signed by Roberta, and this may be my last chance to meet both Roberta and you if you are taking your boat to America. I live near Saint-Tropez.

    Vincent.

That is truly a fantastic new picture on the front page – it’s very fun! We need a system Ken whereby if you are scanning anything semi-interesting for the site, there’s an archival / admin area where you stick a hi-res version for my archival process before you shrink it down for use where you intend it. Either that, or something simpler like an FTP account for the transfer of archival files.

(re: Ken : The new picture) Thank you Ryan!
The picture was taken here in Cabo, aboard a fishing boat I just bought into, along with several of our neighbors.
The funny part is that neither Roberta or I are into fishing. I wouldn’t have the vaguest idea how to catch a fish, and would definitely not want to get involved in cleaning one (yuck!). For us, the boat is just a fun way to be able to cruise up and down the coast.
    Speaking of boats…

In May, Roberta and I are crossing the Atlantic on our “real” boat. For two months we’ll be at sea (counting stops in Bermuda, the Azores, Gibraltar, etc). During that time, I’m not sure to what extent I’ll be able to monitor this site. I’m hoping I won’t lose internet connectivity. I have Satellite internet on the boat, but it’s very slow, and I’ve never tried it from in the middle of the Atlantic, so, we’ll see…

That sparks my memory of when I first played LSL1,

My father who owned a business would occasionally bring me into work on a saturday morning.

They had an old Commodore XT with CGA and the good old PC Speaker

I had seen someone play the game on the computer and it looked fun, however i had no idea about DOS, I only knew how to use the old powermenu =)

I had to learn the basics of DOS so i could navigate the HDD to get to LSL and execute it, so in a sense, LSL compelled me to start learning in computers by learning DOS.

Who didn’t?! I think I left a list of responses somewhere in the past on this website about the silliness!

What’s funny is Al actually talks like the responses in the game!

Hehe, typing dirty words was the first thing I’d try when playing a new LSL game =)

Well Brad I’m glad you’ve had some communication with Josh. I’ve emailed him numerous times in the past to give him scans / photos / information to add / revise to his site, but after 1 reply he always seemed to forget about me and not reply back again.

(re: What Happened to Vintage-Sierra.com?) Not to double post or anything, but I acutally chatted with Josh – and yes indeed – he exceeded his bandwidth limit. Talking to him about Ken’s offer.

The crashes because of a corrupt disk are indeed because of saving. When the bootable version of KQ1 saved a game, it did so in a way that stopped the disk from being bootable. IIRC, the game itself had a command “format disk”, which created a “play disk” which was identical to the original game disk in every way. It was even bootable. Saving a game, though, made the game playable from that disk, but not bootable.

(re: What Happened to Vintage-Sierra.com?) Yeah I noticed that also last night.. didn’t know it was down for 2 or 3 days though. Josh just sent me an email the other night too – didn’t mention anything about it going down, nor did I suspect him of planning on taking it down.
The only thing I could think of was that server bandwidth was getting expensive – he was getting some high-volume traffic through there, and might have hit his limit for the month. That’s my best guess. I know he added a donation page to his site to help him with the costs.

(re: re: re: re: re: HELP: King’s Quest Collection on Windows XP)

There’s a Goodwill store down by UNLV (right across the street, near the Post Office) that has (as of yesterday afternoon) King’s Quest V, but they didn’t let check it out. It had a funny box, a purple box, not the blue box. Also, there was LB1 and a CD copy of LB2, which I bought. The LB1 is for Mac, but was priced rather high for a thrift store, as a new copy of Battlefield something was only $15 and this LB1 was $30, so I passed on it.

Also, be on the look-out for extremely good pirates on eBay. The old PC games that are pirated are grainy on the cover, but only if you hold the box right up to your eye (which can’t be done on eBay) and the shrink wrap is very stiff and heavy, which is the type of shrink wrap sold to small businesses or consumers. The disks’ labels are printed in Publisher or something, but it’s just plain, and these can look like pirates.

I told the seller he sold me a bunk version. He refunded me promptly and I sent the copy of SQ4 for Mac back to him.
I honestly feel he didn’t know, just beware is all I can warn. PlayStation games, too.

(re: Looking for King’s Quest I (original)) In the original AGI Sierra games such as the King’s Quests and Black Cauldron, if you had CGA (instead of EGA), they used to come up in 2-colour Black and White mode and if you pressed Ctrl+R (I think) they would switch into 4-colour CGA mode (with dithered colours) or 16-colour composite CGA depending on your monitor – you could also press the ESC key and navigate to the option in the menu’s. I think this is maybe what Raul is talking about.

It sounds like it was King’s Quest 1, but the crashes he talks about are maybe because he had a corrupt disk.

Raul, you can play the original KQ1 on a PC using the NAGI interpreter (just search for NAGI in google). You don’t need an Apple ][ emulator.

(re: Looking for King’s Quest I (original) )

The AGI version of King’s Quest is the very first King’s Quest. It was written for the IBM PC Jr to showcase the expanded abilities of the that machine (more colors, 3 voices to the music, etc.) It was then ported to the PC and then to other platforms. There are two versions of KQ1 in both collections. The older AGI version and the SCI remake. What you are remembering was probably played on a machine with a graphics card that was not capable of displaying all of the colors.

(re: Looking for King’s Quest I (original) ) I’m only familiar with the Apple II, II GS, C-64, IBM PCjr, DOS “Flopper”, and finally DOS 2.2 versions of the game, which are all mostly the same.
The PCjr version is the biggest change from the other versions, but still looks and plays very similar. The two other extreme versions of KQ1 is the EGA remake in 1990 and the Sega Master Version, which looked great, played awful.
Since all of the versions of the game I play/own are already in color, I can’t verify any other versions of the game that I have already listed.
Are you sure they were bootlegs, pirates, cracks, or warez?

(re: Kings Quest 6 Corrupt Floppies!) Solution for anybody with 5.25 floppies:
Go to a thrift store, buy an old x86 PC with both drives, and copy the disks one by one the old way, then copy those disks to a CD, with lots of games backed-up.
Or, if the x86 has Win3.x or above, networking via serial or parallel port is possible. Lastly, check for a cheap way to just buy the extra floppy drive and hook it up.
All floppy disk controllers in all PCs support 5.25, and WinXP has a driver for it. I still use my mine today in the new PC I just bought (another Compaq Presario).

(re: re: re: HELP: King’s Quest Collection on Windows XP)

That explains that, but still, the box was white, but the disks were old Sierra. Oh, well, if could be a British/Australian copy or what-not.

Hero’s Quest. Memory serves me on something . . .

However, I suffer from terrible amnesia, thanks to Las Vegas area hospitals’ medications.
