Participant(re: re: Manhunter disks)
I’d like the files just as they appear on the original disks so that I can copy them onto my own.
Thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate it 🙂Unknown,Unknown

I have five 5.25″ disks and two 3.5″ disks for MHNY and three 3.5″ disks for MHSF.
No longer have a 5.25″ drive installed in a working PC, though, so I can only get you contents of the 3.5″ disks.
Do you want disk images or just the files?

I have it, haven’t played it yet. I’m planning to someday though. I heard there are some speed problems on newer computers.

Yes! I have it!…I never really finished the game because I was about 12 at the time. I always ran into dead ends. I suppose I should try playing it again now that I have more patience 🙂

The only problem I can see is that the files are not in txt or html format, the way you have it set up is basicly your forcing people to download your stories by clicking the links. Have two versions, html/text and the doc files. It’s a bit more work but better in the long run.

How’s this? I scanned it at 200% and put it in two columns so it would fit on the screen better.

It’s not a Jane game–her husband did the music and she’s involved with the company that created it but she didn’t design it

Participant(re: re: re: Gabriel Knight Mysteries Soundtracks)
I too am trying to download them to my computer to burn a copy. I bought the Mysteries set in 98 but when my parents moved and I went to get all my games back I could find all of the discs from the set except for this one disc. 🙁
When I right click to save it will only save a “view” html page. Anything else i can try?

Participant(re: re: I have internet!!!!) You’ll be happy to know that I’m not roughing it too badly here in Bermuda. I spent the morning golfing, and this afternoon we spent walking a few miles down the beach.
We don’t leave for the next leg of the voyage until next Tuesday, and the crew is doing all the work on the boat — so, I’m just killing time.
Life is good….

Ken! I hope I haven’t missed you! I’ve been following your progress with the daily emails, and it sounds like you guys are being safe and having fun! I’m bitterly jealous and overjoyed for you at the same time!
One thing – what the hell are you doing back on your nostalgia site?!?! You’re in Bermuda, about to cross the Atlantic! Now is the time for celebration of many different kinds! Now isn’t the time to be answering our dumb geeky questions! Grab a cocktail (or an iced latte, if that’s your thing) and hit the beach! Party!!!
(I get a kick out of virtually yelling at Ken. Since he managed a company for so many years, I’m sure very few people have had the opportunity to yell at him.)

Hi, I attached it to my second post on this thread. I can see the attachment on my monitor. I can download it fine from there. If the link isn’t visible on your computer, it could be some kind of problem with the site’s new appearance. It seems some users are having those.

Participant(re: re: re: re: re: Was KQ5 one of the first CD games? ) I believe, but am not positive, that the first “made for CD-ROM” game ever shipped was our own Mixed-Up Mother Goose. I remember paying $25,000 for a CD-ROM burner and going through absolute misery trying to get the game running. At the time, the standard was Windows 3.1, and CD-ROM drivers were anything but standardized.

Guys I had my question answered on digitpress.com.
Basically the first CD based game was “The Manhole” released on the Macintosh around 1988.
There was also “Fighting Street” for the Japanese PC Engine (Turbo Grafx 16 anyone?) released the same year and is the prequel to Street Fighter II.
Regardless, I can’t wait for Ken to get back so he can tell us about moving forward into CD-ROM technology and when they first started flirting with the concept.

Good point. In that case, I read yesterday while dredging up those other articles, that KQ7 was the first King’s Quest game (and maybe the first Sierra game?) to be released on CD only.

In 1990 and 1991, some game collections were released on CD-ROM (can’t remember any specific titles right now), but the games were the same as the floppy disk versions. I even have a CD-ROM full of shareware programs (and games!) that was released in 1987 I think. The “x1”, 150 KB/s speed standard didn’t even exist at that time, that is, you could find CD-ROM drives that were *slower* than that!
King’s Quest 5 was definitely one of the very first games to take advantage of the CD-ROM capacity (although it only occupied 1/6 of the total space available), if not the first (maybe Ken can confirm this). Loom CD was also released very early.
As for games specifically written for the CD-ROM medium, 7th Guest is indeed one of the very first (probably with Myst on the Macintosh).
BTW, Ken, if you read this, I remember seeing in a local (French) computer magazine back in 1990 that the CD-ROM version of King’s Quest 5 would ship on 2 CD-ROMs. After buying the commercial release, and seeing that it only took about 100MB on one CD-ROM, I have always assumed that Sierra first considered using the CD-DA (audio) capacity of the CD-ROMs to deliver the voices (as LucasArts did for Loom), before switching to a compressed audio file on the CD-ROM, played by Sound Blasters and the like. Any rememberance of this?
Vincent.

Participant(re: re: Has there ever been a CD Talkie of Robin Hood?) Could you make it available on this (or another site) so that we can download it? I’m very curious!

Participant(re: re: Patch Archives)
Sierra has most (all?) of their old patches still available for download at their ftp site.
Unfortunately, you have to know the name of what you’re looking for (the naming conventions are pretty easy to decipher though) and the site doesn’t say what the patches do. But it’s a good resource if you know ahead of time what patch you’re looking for.

Participant(re: Patch Archives) Large resource of patches:
Link: http://www.patches-scrolls.de/(http://www.patches-scrolls.de/)
Sierra specific patches (unofficial):
Link: http://geocities.com/belzorash/(http://geocities.com/belzorash/)
The latter site contains SCI script fixes specifically to get around the timer issues a lot of Sierra games have when running on modern systems.

Participant(re: Was KQ5 one of the first CD games? )
Do you mean the first Sierra game, or the first CD-ROM game in general?
I thought the first CD game was Myst but I could be mistaken. (Actually now that I write that, I’m starting to think it may have been the 7th Guest.)
I’m not positive, but I think the KQ6 CD was the first Sierra CD-ROM game, and the KQ5 multimedia version was released after that. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong though.

Cool! Thanks for the webspace! I’ll upload them when I’m done ripping them from my game cd… I’ll see what other cool sierra tracks I’ve got! Hmmm they’re all cool.. 😉

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) I can’t say specifically for QfG4 because my used copy didn’t come with a manual, but in general I’d say yes, the original manuals are way cooler than the ones in the collections.
For example, King’s Quest 4 had a little storybook that gave the history of Daventry and what had happened in the previous 3 games, leading up to the 4th. The copy protection for that game required you to look up a specific word on a specific page in the storybook. In the KQ collections, only a list of words (the “answers”) were provided, so you could get past the copy protection. The storybook itself and the history of Daventry are not included.
Even if much of the info is included (as it is for the KQ6 manual), the original manual itself had nicer materials, cool binding, etc.
I expect it’s the same for all of the collections. I do have the original manual for QfG1 but I have not looked closely at the Collection manual to see how they compare.

Hey, Ken 🙂
Nice to have you back, if only for a brief period of time. While you’re here, maybe you can answer a question regarding your old games for me.
I’ve always wondered why you (Sierra) made the games in a way where it’s possible to encounter dead ends making the game impossible to finish. Was it a deliberate design choice, or was it because of other reasons?Unknown,Unknown
Participant(I have internet!!!!) Greetings everyone!!!!!
I’m finally installed in a hotel in Bermuda, and have a decent internet connection. For those who’ve been tracking our progress, Roberta and I are crossing the Atlantic on our boat. It has consumed about 110% of my time for the last month and we’re not expected to return home to Seattle until late July. As I mentioned earlier, if you are at all into boating, you should consider checking out my daily blog — at
Link: http://sanssouci.talkspot.com(http://sanssouci.talkspot.com) My apologies for neglecting this site. Roberta and I love boating, and couldn’t pass up the chance to cross the Atlantic. The good news is that all has been uneventful thus far, and will hopefully stay that way.
I wil have an internet connection for the next four days, and then we’re back on the ocean.
