Participant(KQ7 illogical puzzle / using walkthroughs) How … are you supposed to know using the comb on Valanice will make her cry?
Yeah, I have to confess that I used a walkthrough for some parts of KQ VII. I did very much enjoy it though. But I was somewhere at the age between childhood (where I didn’t know of, couldn’t get, or didn’t need walkthroughs) and adulthood (where I know I’ll be more satisfied if I finish the game without a walkthrough, and refuse to use one on principle).
As for the comb puzzle, I guess it’s justifiable because you can use the comb on yourself at any time, and as you start the game, it’s likely you should look in your inventory, find out what you have, and hopefully try clicking the comb on yourself. Then you see that she cries. Then later you’re supposed to make the connection of using Valanice’s tears.

Participant(re: Image quality for graphic-interface Museum areas)
That is a good point. The images for the interface itself could be very compressed, so as to load quickly, but still try to have a balance to make them look nice. For any museum item, there could be thumbnails presented first, and then you can view each closeup page. Once you’re in closeup mode, you can page through the series of images, rather than have to go back to the thumbnails each time (though of course a button to still go back to the thumbnails if for example, you only want to see page 5 and page 10 and not the pages in between). Finally, on the thumbnail page, there would be the download version.

Participant(re: re: King’s Quest 6, and illogical puzzles… (mini-spoiler))
err… no, by the time you get to the Land of the Dead, you’re already on the path for the “fuller” ending.
I think the branching happens depending on how you use Beauty’s dress. You can put it on and get into the castle pretending to be a maid. That leads to the “short” ending. Or you can get caught by the druids and use the dress to put out the fire when they trap you — which cuts off your access to the castle wearing the dress (since it burns up). So at that point you’re “stuck” on the long ending (and do need to play the bones once you get to the Isle of the Dead).

Keep in mind that KQ6 has two endings. You could have finished the game without playing the bones. Playing the bones merely opens up the alternate, fuller, more gratifying ending.

Hi, please keep in mind that many of us are accessing this site from international locations using relatively slow connections. I use a terrific download manager called Flashget, and would much rather use it to download zip and pdf files, than first viewing these files in detail on line and only then being able to download them. It would be cool if you could include small, low quality representations of the pics on the site, with a link to the high quality image for download. But I reckon a high-quality jpeg image driven interface will just be too slow.

Looks good. I think that both would be good. The images would be nice if you just wanted to see them, or if you wanted to get an idea of what it is, before downloading it.

Participant(re: re: Sierra Game Remakes)
No amount of donations would cause Vivendi to change their mind. Probably the only thing that would is the success of the new Leisure Suit Larry game. Hopefully, if they do decide to bring back classic series, they decide to have the creators of the game work on it, unlike the new larry game (but the developers are huge fans of the games and I think they’ll do a good job)

Yes! I’ve played KQ1 and 2 remakes and I’d have to say that they were alot more easier to play. They should do a KQ3 also but maybe ease up on Manannan catching you every 5 minutes. In the future, I’d really like to see alot of the earlier games remade like Space Quest 1 and 2, The Black Cauldron, Gold Rush and some early Police Quests.
What about a Gabriel Knight 4!!! But still, it would need the magic touch from Jane Jensen to make it an exclusive Gabriel Knight Adventure!
That makes me think. Most of the time I read on interviews and such that they stop sequels from happening because the budget is low. Depending on the fan’s budgets, what if a group got together and started a funding program of donations to help create these awesome games! (esp GK4!!) Maybe I just have high hopes. 🙂

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight Mysteries Soundtracks) Yes! please update us when you have your new design completed. I’d love to have them in mp3 or wav format. Recording from sound recorder just isn’t cutting it!

I have been working on this. I have been downloading the files on their FTP and identifying them.

Yeah, it’d be a lot of work, but most good things usually are :p

Participant(re: re: OLD SIerra Timer fixes)
This would probably involve a lot of work, but what would be great would be to identify the names of the patches for certain games (since Sierra’s ftp site doesn’t give any explanation as to what game the patch is for, or what it does).
I’d be willing to help if it’s something you want to include on a comprehensive listing.

Participant(re: OLD SIerra Timer fixes) LOL, yeah we know of those. But thanks for posting about them, we would be very grateful if we didn’t already know! Hmm… I think I should mention those at the top of this forum, I’ll go do that.
As Emily mentioned, Sierra’s FTP still has some patches. And we have NewRisingSun’s patches. And there are those patch archives mentioned recently too. I think we should consider setting up our own comprehensive page here with all of the patches available for download and sorted properly.

Participant(re: Re-make V with voice-overs?) Brandon,
Who’s it goin?
I was thinking of doing a remake of Robin Hood with voices, but of course, it never got past the “thinking” stage 🙂
On top of all the work involved simply getting voices in the game and working and looking decent, the voice actors would also have to be decent, or it could hurt the game. I doubt we could get Gary Owens to do the narrative for SQV, and if not, it’s already downhill. Maybe there are some good impressionists out there 🙂
With all the remakes coming out today (Resident Evil 1, Metal Gear Solid 1, Metroid 1, etc, etc..), I think there MAY come a day when Sierra, dead or alive, does remake some of the more popular titles, and only if they could actually turn a profit. But it would only be certain games that are regarded highly, and even then, hope is the only fuel for such thoughts….

Participant(re: re: Willy Beamish)
I haven’t played Willy Beamish yet, but can you give an example of the kind of puzzle in KQ4 where you had to wait for something to happen before you could do something else? I’m not sure I know what you mean.
I do remember the “real time” aspect of KQ4 making me *think* I had to wait for night to come before I could progress. I figured out how many minutes on the clock in the haunted house equalled how many minutes in real time, then left my game running by itself for a certain amount of time until night came. That was such a trip… it was the first game with the day / night cycle, and I loved how the scenes looked different at night (shadows, lighting, etc.) than they had in the day.
It turned out that there were things I had to complete during the day after all, and I restored a saved game. I also almost reached the end and had to play the game through again from the very beginning because I had shot the second of Cupid’s arrows into the air earlier in the game and, of course, couldn’t get it back. Dunno why, but dead ends like that didn’t seem to bother me when I was 10 the way they do now! Maybe I just had more patience then…

Participant(re: Codename: Iceman Sequel)
The Codename: Iceman sequal was mentioned in a catalog that came with King’s Quest 5, I think. I actually wrote a letter to Sierra customer service asking about it, and the reply was something along the line of “we decided against it in the short term, but in the long term we may change our minds”. And Codename: Iceman came out quite a few years before Jim Walls left Sierra over the PQ squabbles.

Participant(re: Inca Series)
As an IDEA, Inca had a lot of potential. It really was a game of two halves, neither of which was done well enough.
On the one hand you had the utterly confusing, badly designed (as in illogical puzzles, usually no clues as to what to do next) first person adventure bits, while on the other you had the space sim bits which the aforementioned Wing Commander games did far better.
If I remember correctly, WC2 was released not too long before Inca, and that had some of the best writing and character development I’ve ever seen in a computer game. Play it if you can get it.

Participant(re: Willy Beamish)
I never liked this game much, even as a kid. It contains some VERY annoying timing based puzzles where you have to do something at exactly the right time or you have to wait for something to happen before you can do something else in order to progress. I hated these sort of puzzles. KQ4 had them too, which is why I never finished that game. (Of course KQ4 was also dissappointing in some other ways, but that’s another topic.)

Participant(re: Willy Beamish) Pretty fun game. I always played it with a friend when I was younger at his house. Now, when I play it on my computer today, I can never figure out how to get past the chef! That may be a speed problem?

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight Mysteries Soundtracks) Thanks for uploading the data track Adam. If either you or Collector could scan the box and CD itself, yeah, that’d be cool. Don’t worry about it right now at the moment though. I’m going to setup a new design for the museum areas very soon now, and once that happens, we can get some sort of procedure with upload space for new museum additions.
As far as I can tell, for those of you who asked, the way Ken has it setup right now you cannot right-click to save. You would need to disassociate MP3s from automatic playback on your system in order to download them with a left-click. As I say though, I’m working on a new design, so if Ken doesn’t change this now, then hopefully when I get that coordinated things like this would be solved.

Participant(re: re: Codename: Iceman Sequel)
I remember reading that same title in one of the Sierra Magazines. I believe it was in the Rumors section of the magazine, but I couldn’t tell you which issue.

Participant(re: Re-make V with voice-overs?) I guess someone could de-compile the game and then make voices for it… or someone could rip all the graphics and re-program it completely and then add voices… but that’s a lot of work for a game that’s many years old now.
I agree, Space Quest V was a very fun chapter in the series, and it would have worked very well with voices. But Sierra definitely is not going to go back and update it, and I think re-making a VGA game just to add voices is low or not at all on the list of any fan group.

Participant(re: Codename: Iceman Sequel) I don’t know anything else about this than the sequel’s (working) title was “Codename: Phoenix”.
That’s an interesting recollection, where did you hear that from? Ken, do you have any memories about the planned sequel to Codename: Iceman?

Participant(re: SQ4 Copy Protection / Replacement CD) I wish I had 24 hours a day to spend on this site… that said, unfortunately, I don’t! But I do try to look at all messages, even if I’m a bit late… so in case you didn’t already find the anwer to your question, here’s my thoughts.
As for the SQ4 Sierra Classics CD, I thought that the copyright protection had been removed on the CD version? I could be wrong. Anyway, you can find a copy of the full manual at
Link: http://www.spacequest.net(http://www.spacequest.net)
.As for obtaining a replacement CD, try eBay.com. If you keep an eye out, surely you will find one there for a cheap price.

wait, how do you download these songs? I can only save them as an html file. I’d like to play them in winamp.
