Toch steeds weer grappig om te lezen hoeveel dat Zuid-Afrikaans op het Nederlands lijkt!

Do you have DOS drivers installed for your soundcard? You might also try DOSBox. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

Dixie, definately give Kings Quest 2: Romancing the Stones a try. Well worth it.
As Emily says, you may as well consider it an entirely new game if you’d prefer to see it that way. It has a lot of new content, and is a great game.
I adored King’s Quest 2 as a child, but upon playing it again more recently, it definately lacks a strong story, just as is stated on the Tierra site. This fact will never lessen my sense of nostalgia about the game, and the experience of playing the game is still full of joy.
Getting all dogmatic about it just seems absurd to me. Utterly absurd.
But irrelevant of all this, I would LOVE to see someone (such as Tierra) make an original game with the same flavor as the old Sierra games, or Tierra’s remakes.
I’ve tried playing games like Syberia, Dracula, Myst, Riven, The Longest Journey, etc, etc, and although they are obviously good games in many ways, they just don’t have the heart or the magic of the old Sierra games.
Now, getting older doesn’t help the situation, and have an ever increasing expectation on the level of detail and immersiveness in computer games makes it harder and harder to make games that really impress people.
If King’s Quest 1 came out onto store shelves for the first time tomorrow, I seriously doubt that it would have the impression on people that it did in 1984. At the time it was shear magic, and so it holds a special place in people’s hearts now, and was the seed for much of what we now take for granted about computer games. But if you held it up against a top-of-the-line modern adventure game, today’s audience would probably not be very impressed.
That being said, I think that it achieves an open-ended in the design that lacks from most modern games. The best thing about it was just how open the world is, allowing the player to gather objects and explore, and just let the world seep in through their senses as they wander the land.
I’d love to see a modern adventure game created with the sort of love and attention given to each and every detail as the old Sierra games.
And yes, I’d rather see an original game that a remake, but this doesn’t reduce the fantastic work done by Tierra on their own re-interpreted and expended game, “Romancing the Stones”.

PS – I was travelling in Europe recently (I’m from Australia), and while in Spain, I was overcome with strong nostalgic emotions related to times spent in my youth playing King’s Quest games (I was travelling with my twin brother who used to play the games with me also). The beautiful Spanish landscape filled my senses and really reminded me of the lands depicted in King’s Quest 1, and other King’s Quest lands. And I started to write down ideas for a King’s Quest styled game, drawing a map and writing down ideas for how the characters, objects and locations could tie together to make “puzzles”.
I could post these notes to this forum if people are interested.

Andreas! I had the SAME problem! I was playing on XP and I was SOOOOO excited to find the hounfour but nooooo the dumb computer had to give me an error! π I tried everything but nothin was working! Luckily my sister has a windows 98 and I played it error-free on that to the end. But! If you dont have a 98 handy, I’d try running it on DosBox. Go to zetafleet.vogons.com and search for DosBox–it’ll direct you where to download it and they’ll even give you handy instructions for computer illiterate people like myself! (you just have to search for it) Here’s my link where I asked about the problem on the forums.

Possibly that will help?

Haai!
As ek dit Γͺrens sien, sal ek jou laat weet.

Yeah, but it’s rarer to find a new copy, which is what I’d be looking for as a collector, and then the prices get high.

The game crashes once I try to use the snake wand on the knothole in the cathedral, and reports something like “Can’t open 803.snd/something” and a reference to some obscure script. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m so close to completing the game, so it’s too bad it happened so late in the game π
By the way, this is the floppy version (1.0)

I know VU’s gaming policy and practices very well. Their promises of putting out fewer games of better quality, of promising of putting more money into Sierra.
I know they care more for money than delivering a decent product.
My first Sierra game was Conquest of Camelot. Played Quest For Glory through, King’s Quest, Phantasmagoria, Shivers, and so on. Absolute favorite is the Gabriel Knight series.
I am mad because no one puts out quality games anymore, and I am afraid that some of that is aimed at the Williams for selling Sierra in the first place. π

Participant(re: Kq9)
It’s too bad people are so narrow-minded about these things. I hope KQ 9 is as good as the Tierra remakes. As for “Sierra”, I hope they aren’t petty enough to sue. From what I’ve read, KQ 9 will be freeware, so they aren’t making a profit on it, plus Sierra no longer has anything to do with Kings Quest, so why should they even care? If it wasn’t for fans, they’d probably forget all about it. I really hate seeing companies turn bad when new management does things like this, I know, I worked for one. As far as I’m concerned, the new owners aren’t deserving of the Sierra name.

Participant(re: About Mask of Enternity….)
In my opinion, KQ MOE is a wonderful game. I wish people would take their heads out of the sand long enough to realize that it isn’t SUPPOSED to be KQ8, it’s a spin off of the popular series. Although it borrows ideas and characters from the first 7 games, it is not the next chapter, or conclusion. Unfortunately, Roberta Williams is no longer with Sierra, so there won’t be any more official games. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Mask of Eternity, even though I was not a combat gane type of person. Despite how far it departs the norm of the series, it brings a fresh look to the world of Daventry. I am an open minded person, and when I found out Tierra/AGDI was remaking KQ! and 2, I was overjoyed. I loved the original games, but lets face it-it was time for a upgrade. That is what MOE did for KQ. Does anyone really think another game revolving around the Royal Family would have sold as well? Why do people think the adventure genre died? Because the market is turning to violence and shooting games. MOE was Sierra’s way of keeping up with the times. It’s not their fault that people today can’t appreciate the masterpiece that is Kings Quest. So to all you flamers out there-LEAVE ROBERTA, KEN AND KINGS QUEST MOE ALONE!!!

Participant(re: Random Encounters on KQ games)
I think the random encounters were phased out because times were changing and they no longer fit with the games. However, Tierra obviously decided it was better to keep them in their radically different version of KQ2. I enjoyed all the games anyway.

The first game that was ever bought for me was from Sierra too…Space Quest. Before that I actually played Mystery House at my grandfather’s house but totally got hooked when my dad brought home Leisure Suit Larry from a guy at his work. I would wait every night for pops to go to bed so I could pop that sucker into the smokin’ DOS 1.2 IBM PCjr π and get my illicit thrills. Once I learned about the rest of the games I begged my parents for a copy of PQ or SQ. SQ I got, and the rest is history.
I too am saddened by the latest turn of events but not too much. I kind of turned away from the brand when K & R left the company anyways. This latest bit of news didn’t really affect me except to remind me of the hours and hours I spent as a kid in front of that damn IBM PCjr. You know, today’s game market is mostly about profitability and licensing…I guess VU cut out all those people so that the remaining ones can enjoy the fruits of World of Warcraft.
As far as salvaging the game quality, I think it’s just like this year’s Lakers. You can have a team full of Hall-Of-Famers and superstars, but if they don’t work well together, you’re not going to get a ring. I see the 80’s Sierra as kind of like this year’s Pistons. They had a team of good people, led by an awesome motivator who knew the game, who were willing to put out 100% every night. The players stuck to the coaches’ plan and kept the end result in sight. When pieces of the puzzle start to drift, the whole team suffers…especially when the owner starts yelling about ticket sales instead of championships.
VU is more concerned about sales than innovative and fun games. I think the only reason they haven’t touched Blizzard is because BE consistently sells games. I wait for the day that VU starts hardball rushing Blizzard release dates. When that happens, watch Blizzard go down the same toilet that our beloved Sierra went.

Yeah, I had the same problem. If I remember right, my copy was bugged or something because I remember dialing 411 but getting a funky message instead of the cab co. number. Of course, I could have just not thought of it at the time…I was just a kid then.
After I got the number, I happily continued on my way and finished the game. Except for that one hint, PQ1 was the only game that I played from start to finish without help…I was addicted.

I’m both extremely mad over it, and I am also very saddened by it. π
My first computer game was by Sierra, and I’ve been a loyal fan until it’s sale when game quality went down the drain.
Why couldn’t somebody salvage it?

Actually, I did read the excerpt, it just didn’t occur to me that the software was never released. After all, Sierra has released tons of software throughout the years that has long been forgotten because it didn’t sell well. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had released it and it just didn’t sell well and so they included it in the collections. I mean, they released the Crazy Nick’s Software Picks, and they didn’t do too well, and were cheap on top of that.
Furthermore, sites like the Underdogs and others give an actual year release date for the program, which made me think that sometime or somehow the software had been released at one point. I suppose I am mistaken, but I was misled by what I read.
Oh well. So I guess there is no “Fun Seeker’s Guide” independant release. Now, at least, I know for sure.
Talk to you later!

Participant(re: Leave plot/storyline/puzzles unaltered in a remake, otherwise it’s an entirely different game)
Simon, that was all very well stated.
In response to Dixie Dog’s questions, I do see the KQ2 remake as a completely different game than the original. One doesn’t replace the other, in my mind, and playing the “new” version doesn’t change the fact that I very much enjoyed playing the old version when I was a kid. Playing Tierra’s version only enriches the experience.
