(re: So Ken, anymore news on this “meeting” with Sierra’s CEO in April?) First off, I apologize to everyone as I am reverse reading what I’ve missed in the past few months. I’m trying to comment as little as possible.

>>

Games are evolving. How many people complained when TV evolved from B&W to color? Or radio to Stereo? Or they had to upgrade to VGA cards to play the latest games?

<<

Games are definitely evolving, but the nice thing about going from B&W to color and from mono to stereo was that the same person could create the content. The same person could shoot B&W or color, the same DJ or musician could record mono or stereo. With games, going from 2D to 3D takes, I don’t know, 20 times the number of people?

I’d love to see 3D become as easy as that, but the only places that seems to be happening are at secondlife.com and there.com, etc.

Does anyone have opinions on the online money trading thing? If you get so many second life bucks, you can trade them out for cash… it’s kind of crazy.

(re: Sierra & id software 1992?) It’s a true story. I’ve told it a few times, and was amused to see it retold in a book about Id recently.

I wish I had been able to persuade them to work with us. I would have pushed harder, but I have never been into violence, and really didn’t want to publish violent games — even knowing that I had a fiscal responsibility to shareholders to “do the right thing” for the company.

A funny part of the story is that I didn’t realize how “casual” they were, and met them at a fancy french restaurant. I wore a coat/tie, and they showed up in totally ripped up clothing, and in flip flops. I didn’t care, and would have happily swapped them clothes – but, the restaurant was freaked out. I was a good customer, so they moved us off to a private room, where we were stared in amazement by any of the restaurants other patrons who happened to see us.

It was a great evening, and one I shall never forget. They are amazing guys and deserve all the success they’ve had.

If there isn”t enough demand to justify adding shelf space in a retail store, why don”t the companies offer the games online? Hell, they could even offer them just for download!
<<

I thought about this a lot due, my opinion was always that they were afraid to include a free sound driver for XP and test games to make sure timing is right on fast computers. πŸ™‚

The goal shouldn’t be the uphill battle of trying to reclaim sierra, but to make games with the spirit of sierra in mind. Getting a successful company together, which would produce high quality games, with a similar working environment, and similar direction. If such a company could actually wedge it’s way into a market dominated by EA, Activision, and other such behemoths… it would be a far greater victory than reclaiming Sierra would.

<< I think it’s personally an addiction to the logo. As kids a lot of us just wanted a business card with that on the side. Maybe I should print one up that says “Designer Wannabe.” Most print shops wouldn’t recognize the logo and probably wouldn’t question it. hehe

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) It’s possible that the Turbo might be set at slow or not at all. The Limited Edition has the Turbo on the install discs, although there might still be the patches and Turbo at Sierra/VU. As for screen size it should be set at 800/600 256 color to run properly.

(re: Alternate Sins Soundtrack?) There are still a few sites that have Downloadable .WAVs and MP3s of the music… although not too many have been updated. You can read about what Robert Holmes considered to be his inspiration at Just Adventure or Ugarte’s website. As for myself, I really loved the GK3 theme and and GK1 theme. But, it was GK2 that caught my eye and then upon seeing the Sierra name, reminded me of the Nintendo version of KQ5… which I still own. After living in Germany for 4 years as a teenager, I had traveled to Bavaria many different times. And the FMV was what made me buy GK2 as soon as I saw it. As of now, I have 3 GK1, 2 Limited Edition 1/2, 1 Limited Edition German, 2 GK2 box sets, 2 GK3 box sets. Why so many? If one breaks, I have another. Also, I used to buy and send them out to those that couldn’t get them in their country… reimbursement of purchase price and postage only. I did the same thing with the books that Jane wrote. A small number of them were also mailed to Jane for a special autograph from her. I made a lot of friends this way. If you’re interested in some of the download site links for the music, let me know and I’ll post them here.

Yes, I know that would be difficult… but I think it would be a really good cd… from all videogame music Gabriel Knight has always been nΒΊ1 for me… The Nightmare theme is very very good, I already loved it in the disquette version… but had to buy the cd version just to hear that high quality Nightmare theme… yeah I own Sins of the Fathers twice, I just adore that game… and playing the game made like stay without doing a single thing or advancing just to hear the whole track of music from beginning to end of every location… I remember listening to the track you can hear when you’re staying at the front of Malia’s mansion, I loved that music, I still do… I’d love they would do something like that… I’ve grown up with Sierra Online games, and particulary with Sins of the Fathers….

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Hi, Cat. Yes, post your config file content here so we can compare. If I can remember, there’s a fullscreen value that must be set to True. I’m not sure why it would be running slow though.

ps. btw, I’m JulesThe from the sierra boards πŸ™‚ Hi!

Sierra games were my inspiration for learning programming too. King’s Quest, Space Quest, and the rest spawned a whole generation of programmers who now have a career in computers.

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Ants Bull, thanks for your answer. Great to hear that you have no prob with the game, but I strictly refuse to switch to XP (I would not really wanna call it upgrade *eg*).

To all:
I installed the DOS Box last night and – oh WOW – got GK running, but!!!…. in a 25% window, VEEEEEERYYYY slow (the intro took about 30 minutes!!!) and with a sound that does NOT deserve this name πŸ˜‰

Question:
Could I post my DOSBox config-file in here so someone who has struggled through the same problems would be able to tell me how to get it right?

Won’t be able to do this until later tonight though or even later this week.

Thanks to all.

I can pay them a visit, but I’m sure they’re all over it by now. I’ve got a review copy (lucky me), but it was released 9/4. I guess they pushed it up for an early release. πŸ™‚

Ants Bull, how did you get around the save bug that you get with GK1 on XP?

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) I had to do a lot of tweaking with the config file to get mine to work on XP. What does your config file look like, Ants Bull?

EDIT: I believe it was the DOSBOX config file..not the game file.

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Actually I have been running Gabriel Knight 1 on XP on a P3-600 Mhz, 128 Megs RAM just using VDM sound, perfectly with speech etc. I never had any trouble setting it up, and both the Windows and DOS versions run great.

Win 98 would be certain to get the DOS version running, but you will not get digital sound effects or speech unless you have a legacy Sound Blaster card installed.

My advice would be to do what I did and just upgrade to Win XP, and rebuild your machine (i.e. new software isntalls) from scratch.

Unfortunately, this game is a pain on XP and I would imagine it is the same on 2k. A few have had some success with DOSBox. You can search VOGONS for GK1 for help on this, but, your computer is really too slow for DOSBox. There is someone (Endroz) that is developing patches for the GK bugs, but you will have to wait. His site can be found here:

http://utenti.lycos.it/gkita/

In the mean time, you could always get a copy of Windows 98 and do a dual boot on your computer with both 98 and 2k and play the game in 98.

See, I wasn’t all that wrong with my assumption about the code being some part of a prize

BTW, you get a different code at the end of each new game you started…

(re: GK Tourism) Hi, everyone – I’m new and this is my first post!Β
Β
I visited Germany back in 2000, before I had played any of the Gabriel Knight games, and I saw Neuschwanstein, Munich, and Herrenchiemsee. It was interesting to play the game later and see the places where I had been in real life. I also speak German, so that added an element of fun for me in playing the game.
