    I just purchased the collection off of eBay and can’t get the first disk to install- even in MS-DOS! I am only running windows 98. I have to say that I just found this website and it is like coming to a reunion! I was raised on this series. I played the original on PCJr. I remember staying home “sick” from school just to be able to play all day. It is so great that there are others who love it as much!

    I’ve got GK3, but haven’t played it properly yet (still on GK1 at the moment), so I didn’t read the solution to the puzzle. However his statement about adventure games committing suicide is complete nonsense. He somehow forgot to mention how brilliant the rest of GK3 is (from what I’ve read on the net).

    (re: LSL5: file not found) Hey, Gildor.. try running it with VDMS since it looks like you’re having a sound error. I’m not sure if the saved games will still work but try it out anyway. 🙂 here’s the link to get VDMS:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

    p.s… i still havn’t had the chance to play lsl6! it probably won’t be for awhile..sorry 🙁

    (re: Original game source code) We did have a large repository of source code, but I have no idea what happened to it after the acquisition.

    My guess is that most has been lost.

    (re: Sierra is gone) Realm looks like fun; I e-mailed Ken about making a 3-D version of this, kind of like Blaxxun, remember that MMO game/universe? It used VRML, but now we can use Flash objects and classes.

    Also no-one has really mentioned this game that is the CREAM of the CROP. If you have a steering wheel for your computer, check out Sierra’s Viper Racing. There’s a cult following for it and there are a few groups of users:

    – Hardcore GT racers who race Simulation mode. These guys are very serious and recommend a MOMO forcefeedback wheel.

    – Class A Racers who race the EXOTICs. The tires grip more like arcade settings even in simulation mode, but you can still drift at high speed.

    Check it out at http://vrgt.notrix.net/

    I race as “JK”

    (re: Old Games) If you’re after any Sierra adventures released since around Kings Quest 5 I’d recommend eBay as I managed to get every Sierra talkie CD adventure off there this year, some of them really cheap.

    Do you want the games to play or to actually collect them? There are other ways of getting the older games, like Space Quest’s 1-5 are available on http://www.spacequest.net. Using google you can find tonnes of places where can download them. E.g. http://alcor.pe.kr/games.php

    Thanks for christmarx.com, but eBay’s no good. I tried it for a while, almost a year.The really old games start off cheap, but there’s so much competition for them,& they’re so hard to find, that the price shoots right up. I was hoping more to find someone selling them.

    I don’t see how a file could become corrupted on a CD. Check your CD for scratches, smudges, abrasions etc.

    (re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Hi, Alun

    You don’t say what OS you’re working on. I’m assuming XP. Try copying the files to your hard drive instead of going through the install. As for the VU site not giving any info on the RWA, you need to dig alittle bit further. Try this: http://community.vugames.com/WebX?13@55.2yNmdJ5POpW.714334@.ef93db8  and start a new thread. There’s people there to help you. 🙂 Hope this helps!

    (re: Roberta Williams Anthology) I’ve had a copy of the Roberta Williams Anthology for years, but hadn’t gotten around to reinstalling it since getting my new computer; I finally decided to do so, and couldn’t get past the computer test part. Every time it tried to test the CD drive, it would crash with an “integer division by 0” error.

    Anyway, the reason I bring this up is to mention that I went to the Sierra site to try to find some tech support info on it, and–there’s absolutely nothing about the anthology there. Nada. It doesn’t even appear in the KnowledgeBase dropdown (although other collections, and other products at least as old, do). For some reason VU just doesn’t seem to be acknowledging that the Anthology ever existed…

    Oh, well. Anyway, I eventually did get it installed by just skipping the CD test, and played the first few King’s Quests for the first time. (I’m on KQ3 now.) Yeah, I admit, I didn’t have them when they first came out, and I’d never played them before. Though I did play through the first few Hi-Res Adventures as a kid, so I certainly didn’t have an entirely Sierra-free childhood. 😉

    I played the game also. For the xbox. It was sortof fun taking turns with my freind on all the minigames like dancing and gathering girls for a pimp. But it does have the same style as most games do now.. its almost entirly based on minigames. The humor is funny but definitly doesnt have the original larry feel and quality. But hey its good larry is living on in some way.. just to remind the future of the past…

    (re: Problems with KQ V —-> Dark Forest) If you are talking about getting the Windows version of KQ6 going on Windows XP, it is more involved than that. You’ll need to have VDMSound installed on your system to do it, but you will need it to play the older KQ games with audio, anyway.

    1) Download VDMSound from http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ndldownload.php?filename=VDMSound2.1.0.exe  and install it.

    2) Go to the KQ6 shortcut in your start menu and right click on it and choose “Properties”. Copy what is in the “Target:” box and paste it in Notepad. Save it in the games folder as KQ6.bat.

    3) Copy the file “RESOURCE.AUD” from the CD to the installed game folder on your hard drive.

    4) Open your game’s installed folder on your hard drive and if you find the file “HDLOGO.AVI,” delete it. Open the file “SIERRA.INI” (it may be in a sub-folder named “WIN”) in Notepad. Look for the lines:

    audpath=D:

    audio=D:

    movieplayer=1

    (Note, yours may be different, depending on what letter drive your CD-ROM is.) Chang this to:

    audpath=.

    audio=.

    movieplayer=0

    Note that there should be a backslash after the “D:” and the “=.” but, it doesn’t show on this board.

    5) Right click on the file in the installed folder, “SCIWV.EXE” and go to the Compatibility tab and choose Compatibility mode for Win 98 or Win 9, 256 colors. do the same for the file you made earlier, “KQ6.bat”

    6) Now all you have to do is right click on the .bat file you made and choose “♫ Run with VDMS” (the one with the musical notes) and the game should run.

    You will find a new file in the installed folder — “KQ6.VLP” When you want to play the game after this, just double click on this file. You can copy this file to your desktop, your start menu or where ever you find easy to get at to run the game.

    Does that .bat thing work with KQ6 as well? That one won’t run on my computer either.

    The trip to England was won by Peter Strumolo of New York. I found this in the Sierra magazine volume 2,no.2 Autumm 1989. There is a copy of KQ4 on e-bay it is the 256k version that some have been trying to locate, look under the heading tandy. I played the amiga version of kq4 on an emulator and the music and sound effects are great and I was able to purchase the real game last night, can’t wait to get it.

    (re: KQ IV ending) Somehow, the link has disappeared. Here’s a copy of the original post:

    That secret code was part of a sweepstakes. A trip to the UK, if I remember correctly. When you won the game, you could write the code down on an entry card and send it in to Sierra to be entered in a drawing. Whether or not anyone won, I don’t know. As far as I know, this was only part of the first SCI version. The one I have on my KQ Collection doesn’t have a code, while my original disk version does. Anyone know if there are more than two SCI versions out there? Even between the two I have, there’s a slight graphics difference (not in quality, just detail).

    If you want to play Phantasmagoria 1&2 off your hard drive instead of using the CD’s, you can! This way, you can back up the games onto DVD ready to copy onto your Hard Disk whenever you want to play the games (no installing necessary). First, copy all the CD contents onto your hard drive.

    For Phant1 move all the CD’s Robot, VMD and patches files into the CD#1 dir’s (there are multiples of some files on every CD except for CD7, it saves over 1GB of space). Next since all the SFX files are different for each CD, copy them into their own seperate folders. Now set the paths for the folders in the resource.win file as follows, replacing the D:\TEMP\P1 path with your own dir path.

    resAud=D:\TEMP\P1resSfx=D:\TEMP\P1\;D:\Temp\P1\D2;D:\Temp\P1\D3;D:\Temp\P1\D4;D:\Temp\P1\D5;D:\Temp\P1\D6;D:\Temp\P1\D7
    robot=D:\TEMP\P1;D:\TEMP\P1\ROBOT
    patchDir=D:\TEMP\P1;D:\TEMP\P1\PATCHES
    movieDir=D:\TEMP\P1\VMD
    rescdisc=D:\TEMP\P1resmap=D:\TEMP\P1
    For Phant2 move all the CD contents into one dir, and all the DUK files into one DUK folder and patches into another. The P2 audio “SFX” files appear to be the same on each CD except for CD5; put it into another folder. Now just set the paths in the Resource.win file as below, replacing the P2 dir and drive with your own:

    palette=D:\P2\DUK
    resAud=D:\P2resSfx=D:\P2;D:\P2\SFX_DISK_5
    resMap=D:\P2
    rescdisc=D:\P2patchDir=D:\P2\;D:\P2\PATCHES
    movieDir=D:\P2\DUK
    robot=D:\P2\ROBOT
    discID=RESSCI
    CD:=D:\P2useDirectDraw=TRUE
    useDirectSound=FALSE

    It seemed to work fine for me, hopefully for others who try this as well.
