Participant(re: Internal PC Speaker sound)
hey Kevin 🙂 I was wondering.. what kind of tweaking did you do? I’m assuming you changed some things with the config file..

Participant(re: Internal PC Speaker sound) Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to get it to work well in DOSbox, but it took a little tweaking of the CPU cycles and frameskip rate. It is an old machine (Compaq Presario from ’98) and at first I wouldn’t be able to get DOSbox to run it smoothly, but some tweaking helped and I pretty much have what I wanted now, though I doubt DOSbox could run anything more demanding than an old EGA game with my hardware limitations.
Perhaps I’ll try downloading and running it through Nagi to get the 3 channel speaker option a little later. Thanks for all your help.
Now to play Space Quest! Well, for about only 10 minutes before I have to get to work 🙂

There is an emulator to try called Nagi, which will play all the old AGI style Sierra adventures perfectly. It even plays the games with the three channel tandy sound and some of the digital effects that were in them. This makes them sound far better than the PC speaker. DOSBox will run games but only with 1 channel PC speaker sound and it will struggle on an old Win 98 machine (if it is an old machine).

Participant(re: Internal PC Speaker sound) Thanks
I’ll try it and post here whether it works or not.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Take a look at this:

Its a prime example of what I mean by people who stick to genres. I mean no offense to him, but I just had to use this proof. My name is avatar_58 on that forum, so you can read my comments.
Why would the sims 2 or any non action game be biased to a certain gender (im sure you can guess what gender he was referring to) Thats even sexist….I’m sure there are quite a few UT2k4 female players…I know for sure there are female rpg fans.

Use DosBox. I remember looking for this awhile back, I even asked such people as Ken Silverman (maker of duke3d’s engine..he actually replied 3 times 😀 ) It forces all Internal speaker sounds to come out of your sound card. It works with all 3 channels too.

If you need help running it just ask.

I don’t think you can judge games in different genres. I have favs for each one, but I wouldn’t say “This adventure is better than that fps game”. Just because they aren’t meant to be the same.

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight, Phantasmagoria etc. Backup on DVD? ) Hi again Mike,
I’ved tested your way, but get some errors on founding sound-files:
Chapter 2: going straight to the shop in the city. On opening door Phantasmagoria crash. Same Problem with my Saved Game etc.
I think he’s looking only the first place for the right file (cause all .SFX-Files have the same name).Unknown,Unknown

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Is there an online game like Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time?
I thought that would be great. I would pay monthly up to $39.95 if the game was good enough!!
MMORPG with the tight physics and simple graphics of Zelda 64, or the cell-based graphics of the New Zelda for GameCube,… It can’t be too random like EverQuest… more like Hero’s Quest (QFG) where you have classes of fighters, maybe a custom image for your face. Lots of adventures (missions) given to you by the NPC’s that wander the village in 3-D with horses,…. whoa. Of course if it’s Zelda: CHICKENS are in the town. They are everywhere. No rats, but.. lots of chickens. And they are quite annoying.
I can’t find a game like that right now…

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Yea I have a huge problem with adventure gamers calling people “shallow” for playing action games. I’ve noticed this attitude prevalent among most online adventure game communities and websites that I’ve come across. They’ll say things like “if you’re a pimply-faced adolescent looking for info on Grand Theft Auto Version 26, you’re in the wrong place.” The really great part is that they almost always name games that are actually much better than any adventure game has been in at least half a decade (GTA, Mario, etc.).
The first time I saw something like this was way back in 1996 or so, a few months before Super Mario 64 came out. It was in PC Gamer’s adventure column. The guy writes “…the world does not need another bloody Super Mario game!” Super Mario 64, 8 years later, remains one of the top 5-10 games ever made (personally I’d say 1-3).
The attitude seems to be something fairly unique to adventure gamers – I find that people who have a “favorite genre” other than adventure often do play some of the best games in other genres.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Good..so I’m not the only one who likes more than one type of game. I just don’t like it when some people call you a shallow person when you play Doom or Unreal, or when “new generation” gamers think your wierd for playing old sierra adventures. If a game is fun and you like it thats all that matters right?
Heres an example of some new games I’ll be getting some time in the near future when I get my new computer (and some money):
Sims 2 (already bought it now)
Leisure Suit Larry: MCL (despite the critics I want to judge it for myself)
Doom 3
Half-life 2
Need for Speed Underground
Max payne
Myst 4
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3So you see how my palette varies.

Has that space quest site really been up since 1998? How is it possible they have had the games for download for so long without Vivendi sticking their almighty foot in the door? I have always waited for the day I could make a site full of older sierra games for download…lord knows we can’t get them any other way today.

That sometimes happens and isn’t good. If the CRC check fails, probable your cd is damaged beyond repair. However you could clean it and try it in a different CD drive. If you manage to read the CD, make a cd image and record it.

Although I prefer graphic adventures above all else, I must recognize sometimes I get tired. Then I play games from other genres, like SimCity 4 or Unreal Tournament. Usually I don’t enjoy FPS, but they are funny if you play them with some friends.
I also like GTA, Baldur’s Gate.. and lately i’ve been playing Inspector Parker, a great puzzle game made by Oberon Media, a company who I believe belongs to Jane Jensen.Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Offer to email old games) Oh yes… I am also willing to send games… I am also looking for some too 🙂

Participant(re: Offer to email old games) I can email old sierra games too…considering I have practically all of them as well. If anyone wants them, please add me to your msn:
Just let me know on msn and I’ll help you out. I just wish when I missed some when I was originally looking that someone helped me..took me quite awhile to get them all.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer)
Same here, I play any genre as long as the game is good. When you restrict yourself to one genre of games, you miss out on a lot of really good games.

Participant(re: Old Games) If you need a good way to run them all on new machines using Windows XP or the like, try dosbox.
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
It plays every old sierra adventure perfectly, assuming your computer is fast enough for it. Mine can handle most older games in the SCI range…after that I use vdmsound to make the sound work in games like Larry V.

Participant(re: “Death of Adventure Games”) I don’t know what that guy is talking about. Gabriel Knight 3 was a great game to me. It took me awhile to get used to the camera controls, but in the end I loved it. That mosely disguise puzzle tooke me no longer than anything else in the game…Seemed simple enough to me, its logic. If you need a moped and the only one who hasn’t claimed one is mosely…then think about that for a minute.
GK3 was not the end of adventures….the end of “good” adventures maybe but it certainly wasn’t Jane Jensons fault. I found the GK series great, aside from needing many hints in GK1 🙂 (only because I became too anxious to see more of it all at once…I kicked myself when I learned the answers most of the time)
As for adventures nowadays…hum. I haven’t played any newer ones so I can’t say. I’m getting a new machine soon so I’ll need some direction as to what an “adventure” is today. I doubt its the same game type I know of..
Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: “Death of Adventure Games”) I completely disagree with that article. For one thing, there were random inventory puzzles in adventure games for a LONG time before GK3. For another, the article was written in 1999 soon after GK3 came out… five years later adventures are still coming out. That implies they’re not dead, in my opinion. 🙂
