Participantyes thats definatly a confusing problem… I spoke to my other buddie about vdms, and he has the EXACT same problem as you, so i gave him the same advice i gave you. And he installed dosbox, and everything works fine. SO i have a feelings vdms has a problem of some sort, trying to support newer hardware. SO it worked for him, so it should hopefully work for you. I also dont think there is much support for vdms, and noone is updating that program. (well i have not seen any newer versions, for over a year i think)
Whereas DOSBOX is an ongoing program, which recieves quite a bit of updating fairly often, by its creator, so support for newer hardware, should never be a problem with Dosbox…
Well that should solve everything.
Just let us know if it worked for you! Happy Sierra Gaming!

ParticipantKen, do you have any fans that are also friends that could maybe put this together with your’s and Roberta’s help? I am a fan, but could honestly say that my strength is more in tech support than in writing. I did really well in English back in school, though. LOL

ParticipantTry typing pirate at the code screen?
What does this do??

ParticipantI don’t remember a scrolling text thingy at the bottom, but maybe it was. I know that in DOS text seems to disappear, but it is just the text scrolling down to the next line.
I also had the Tandy 1000. Big piece of expensive shtuff. That damn computer erased my disk for KQ1 or 2 because you couldn’t leave the disk in the drive on shutdown. It would erase the contents. I ended up getting a $5.00 replacement from Sierra back then. How cool was that? I was just a stupid 8-9 year old. I only knew I wanted to play the game—I cared nothing about the rest of the computer functionality. LOL
I miss the old days. I would spend hours/days/weeks on those games. I can honestly say it has made me nostalgic and I bought the reissues a couple of years ago. I just wish ViVendi had included ALL THE GAMES in the packs. Sheez.

ParticipantI can try DOSBOX…I’ve always used VDMS before and not had any problems, so had no reason to use DOSBOX too..What’s interesing is I’ve had problems running VGA games that were made after 1992 and some of the ones that were designed for WIN95 or 98 like KQ7 etc….but NEVER had any problems with any of the AGI or SCI games pre-1992…so this was a complete surprise, considering that it was working just fine prior to putting the new system board in….
I’ll give it a shot…
Thanks Again

ParticipantI’m jealous of you.

ParticipantAnd as it turns out, Sierra (in its Vivendi incarnation) actually planned on giving the King’s Quest series a similar makeover to the one they gave Larry. Adventuregamers has a story on this, with two concept images:

Thank god they didn’t go ahead with this one… still, I wonder if Ken or Roberta ever heard of Vivendi’s intentions to ressurect the franchise back then.

ParticipantUmm, all i can suggest is are you using DOSBOX ??? I know you think its not a software issue, but sometime it can be, Some newer cpu’s, i have noticed, sometimes are not compatible with older software, which confuses me a bit, but its gotta do with them not adding the support for newer hardware… I know Vdms had these issues, but so far DOSBOX has worked like a dream for me and my buddies, and we all upgrade our hardware quite a bit. SO i cant see Dosbox not working for you… The best you can do is try… But thats quite a strange problem you have. I hope i have helped in some way… Please let me know if dosbox worked for you, or just give us an update on your progress… the more info i get, the more i can try and help. Best of luck.

ParticipantYup, i could not agree enough! Without Al Lowe, it simply ain’t Leisure Suit Larry! We were all dissapointed when Leisure Suit Larry 8 : Lust in Space, got the axe… Then Suddenly they unleashed that dreadful, pervert laden… Magna Cum Laude, which lacked any kind of sophisticated humour, was more a mini game clone, than an adventure game, and to top it off, Al Lowe was not even contacted in the end to help out… Which resulted in a lack luster title, which sadly ruined our great old leisure suit larry series… Not to mention the fact, that larry is not even a key figure, but instead, his hillbilly looking nephew has assumed the role. With that said, i could care less for this new larry game, ill keep my eye out, but if its anything like the last, i would not even want a pirated copy of it…. My condolences to Mr Al Lowe, we will never forget who created this great series…

ParticipantHow can anyone get excited by any LSL game without Al Lowe? This will just be more ‘Larry Loveage’ garbage. To call it a Leisure Suit Larry game is a sham.

ParticipantJoanne, your best bet is to head over to Adventure game Studio and ask someone there to remake the game for you.

ParticipantI’ve done it with a few Sierra games. It’s not that hard if you’re familiar with the game. Most difficult thing is not falling off narrow paths. But it all depends on the game. Games like the original King’s Quest were difficult because of the random baddies that run out and kill you. The random nature of the games requires some luck. So it’s impressive winning King’s Quest II without saving since it had a few of those. I think I did it for Space Quest 1-2, Police Quest 1, and maybe King’s Quest III. I don’t remember. Those were the games I played the most.

ParticipantI remember the game well, because I had a Tandy 1000, too. Quest for the Crown wasn’t the first game we got — To Heir is Human was the first. My dad found To Heir is Human at the Radio Shack and bought it because he thought it looked like fun. This was when the world was entering the age of computers. You were always urged to save the game, but we couldn’t — our computer didn’t have enough memory. We lost the game (I-IV) in a house fire, but I’ll forever remember the fun we had with them.

ParticipantHi Gerrianna,
The first King’s Quest game requires the keyboard to be used to direct Graham’s actions, using simple verb-noun combinations. For example, he can get the bowl by typing “get bowl.” It sounds to me like you might be using the mouse to move him around. You can also use the arrow keys on the keyboard.
I hope this helps!

ParticipantI echo your thoughts, Merry Xmas! I’ve been playing the Xmas Sierra programs, lots of fun.
Hope to get more presents again that excited me as much as Sierra’s games did.

ParticipantHello everyone!
The Adventure Companion has just been updated with material relating to King’s Quest II – Romancing the Throne. Friends of Walt Whitman might enjoy this.
Then again, maybe not! (I also posted about this at Adventure Gamers, Just Adventure+, and Vivendi’s King’s Quest forum.)
