    (re: re: Willy Beamish)

A very irritating speed problem. I think you need to use one of those programs that will slow your computer. I’ve been using MoSlo for some older games, like Traffic Department 2192(?) I alwys forget the year. Unless you purchase the upgraded version though, you can only use it on .exe or .com files. So if you have to run a .bat (like I did in Quest for Glory) I might recommend you look for something called CPUKiller and try that for a “quick fix”. (Literally, you only get like 20 minutes, so better hurry!)

(re: KQ4 password needed) You can get the information in this thread: {link}33514

Hmm… for some reason the image is being displayed as smaller than acutal size, which makes it hard to read. I uploaded the list of words to my website temporarily. You can see it at the link below. Save it to your desktop for when you play the game – you will be asked for a different password each time you try to play.

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Thanks guys, for the great advice. Unfortunatly, I believe this to be an actual factory error. Both disk one and disk two are the same. But because of the wonderful fans of this game, I have been sent KQ1-5 and now can play to my heart’s content! I guess I’ll just put my antholgy on the shelf…

    (re: found collector website)

Thanks for the recommendation; that’s actually my site ๐Ÿ™‚ and I post here at SierraGamers every now and then.
Though the site also has frames, so here’s the proper link for easier navigation:
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_eng_games_sierra.html

And here are these collector’s check lists related to f.ex. adventure/RPG vintage game collecting, including Sierra (Lucas, Tolkien, Ultima, AD&D, SSI, etc.):
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_eng_collecting.html
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_eng_collecting_sierra.html

    The site’s under constant development.

As seen there I try to list every single release and variation of Sierra-games, progs, catalogs, hint books and related material as a brief “collector’s check list” with mini pictures.
Links lead to bigger scans of the stuff in my own collection.
(Though many scans, both front and back, are still missing from what I have in my collection or are on their way.)

New variations of Sierra game and other releases come up often and there surely are unbelievable amount of them.
So if you happen to know or have seen anything not mentioned at my collecting lists, I’m always more than interested to hear about it.
And if you have a box scan or other picture that I’m missing, the better. Thanks.

Well, it does run on the MSDOS utility in windows, but its slow as hell and the music doesn’t work, though it reads the CD sound perfectly. I also looked in the CFG file and it does have a line that says “memoryDrv = ARM.DRV”.

Try running the DOS game in Windows. Also, make sure that there is a line in the game’s RESOURCE.CFG file that says memoryDrv=ARM.

(re: SQ4 memory problem) OK, sorry for being a little vague. I can’t even install the programme in Windows, as the setup.exe freezes at a certain point. This also happens with other Space Quest games, so I’ve always just restarted the computer in MSDOS mode. I then installed the DOS version with with install.exe. SQ4 installs fine, and it seems all the files are there, but when I try to run the program it starts to read the CD and kicks me out, saying I need to free up memory. Only SQ4 does this.

    Thanks for responding, however

    (re: SQ4 memory problem)

First of all, are you trying to install the Windows version (setup.exe) or the DOS version (install.exe)?

When you say you’re trying to play in DOS, do you mean you quit to a DOS prompt? Or did you open a DOS prompt within Windows?

If you have installed the Windows version, what happens when you try to run it? (In other words, when you say “it doesn’t work at all,” what have you tried to do and what happened when you did it?)

(re: Gabriel Knight, Phantasmagoria etc. Backup on DVD? ) For Phant1, each disc has a different seperate SFX file, unlike Phant2, which are all the same except for disc5.
What I did was put each sfx file from each CD into a different directory and point to the pathname of each individual dir in one line as such.

    resSfx=D:\P1\;D:\P1\D2;D:\P1\D3;D:\P1\D4;D:\P1\D5;D:\P1\D6;D:\P1\D7

Note the “;” operator between each path.

The game ran without a problem for me. Maybe check over you resource.win settings to see if your paths are all set correctly… You know how computers are..

(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Johann de Waal, I haven’t taken offense and you’re right, I’ve been away from gaming for awhile indeed. I hope you do neither take offense when I say that I find your statement of opinion a little void of substantiation. So what made you think Doom 3 was so “derivative” and “unoriginal”?

To give just one example, I thought the
    Link: http://www.martianbuddy.com(http://www.martianbuddy.com)
internet ad whose URL can be found in a spam e-mail that comes with a PDA file was a great idea and to me it shows some dedication on id Software’s behalf. I really like the way it’s done; to me it’s the closest thing to Infocom’s feelies I’ve seen in a long time. The combination opens a cabinet containing some equipment that’s locked with a keypad combination – the one you can find on the martianbuddy.com homepage. In which FPS have you come across something like that lately?

Please don’t take offense, but frankly, if THAT’s your perception of Doom 3 (the most derivative, unoriginal FPS ever?), then you really have been away from gaming for awhile.

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Julie – Er… thanks for trying to help, I suppose, but I guess you didn’t read the last paragraph of my post. As I said, despite my initial difficulty, I did eventually manage to get the program installed.

About the VU site not giving any info on the RWA, I was referring to the fact that it doesn’t appear on the dropdowns and doesn’t seem to be acknowledged in any official way by VU. I’m well aware that that this doesn’t prevent people from seeking advice from fellow fans, and in fact had been considering starting a thread about it on the very page you link to (but didn’t do so because I ended up figuring out how to solve the problem myself).

Heidistucky, though, have you tried following Julie’s advice? It doesn’t really help me, since I already managed to get the installation to work, but maybe her advice will work for you…

Lucky guys, what country are you in? I’ll be getting it sometime nearby when it comes out. I’m not going to judge it against LSL 1-7, instead just play it for what it is. Are there any significant references to the older games?

(re: The Hybrid Gamer) I’ll probably get Doom 3 eventually, some time after I get my new pc (which is so soon I can scream…) It sounds like a good game to me despite criticism.

On the topic of being open minded towards different genres, how many people are going to get Larry MCL? I am…I don’t mind the new stlye, it might even help the series. It may not be an Al Lowe masterpiece, but it looks funny!

Actually, dosbox *has* pcjr 3 voice support. Check the config. I have it working on mine. I can hear all the channels and it runs perfectly with older sierra games on my XP machine.

(re: The Hybrid Gamer) I don’t mean to be offensive, but I’d rather agree with Scream than with you. The gender question has always been a hot topic in the game industry and it’s been a topic for Sierra On-Line, as well. King’s Quest IV, e.g., introducing a female protagonist, was a daring attempt to attract a greater female audience. Interestingly, the Leisure Suit Larry series was known to have an above average appeal to women.

My point is, women and men are different. This isn’t sexism, it’s just the plain truth. Anyway, life would be very boring if it weren’t so! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I understand that sexism does exist and that a lot of differences between women and men are socially induced… No matter what, these differences exist and marketing people have to deal, among other things, with gender breakdowns of audiences. Maybe we’re talking clichรฉs here, but these clichรฉs do influence the market, and society. There’s no reason not to talk about it.

Don’t get me wrong, though… I’m with you all the way concerning cross-genre open-mindedness. You made me reflect on my own prejudices – thank you very much for that! ๐Ÿ™‚

Concerning Doom 3 – I’ve lost interest in the game market during the last 8 years or so. Everything I see my mates play looks like little more than slightly improved versions of very old concepts… I write this to clarify that I’m not a “gaming insider” at all, so my opinion on Doom 3 is my opinion in relation to the old Doom games and some of the later FPS I’ve seen around like Battlefield.

I’ve played Doom 3 at a friend’s house, with speakers turned up, lights turned out and doors closed… And though I found the gothic / horror style violence displayed a little too sick for my own personal taste at times (I’m not complaining, Doom is notorious for its gory shock effects, after all, so that’s what you’d expect), I found the overall experience VERY exciting and living up to my expectations. One very cool gimmick is the PDA you’re carrying around, collecting files from former coworkers. These contain e-mails and voice files providing you with bits and peaces of the dark story as well as hints and combination numbers for keypad-locked doors. One of these combinations you even have to pick up from an internet page whose URL you find in a spam e-mail! (All in game, so you won’t be spammed personally! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I thought this was a marvellous idea because it really gets you involved; it’s even a little like an adventure game puzzle. I think utilizing the internet for this is also a neat idea. I don’t know if it’s been done but I do find this quite innovative (about people who said Doom 3 isn’t innovative at all.) So is the “torch thing”. You have to use a torch to spy in dark corners a LOT. And of course, when you spot something, you have to switch back to your shotgun quick! It seems strange that 3rd millenium space suits don’t have helmet lamps, but the idea really makes for an exciting experience! I found the graphics engine very compalling, too. Maybe someone’s done it before, but I haven’t ever seen hot air flicker in a game before.

That said, I think if you haven’t devoured every fps since Half-Life and feel somewhat nostalgic about Doom, this is definitely a game for you to play! I can’t see why anyone found this atmospherically ingenious game disappointing… Too high expecations, I suppose, like others have stated in that 3D-Realms Forum.
