Participant(re: re: “Death of Adventure Games”) They are not dead by a long shot. But the suits decided they cost to much to make. Right now they want military shooter or sports games.
We get a good adventure about every 2 years or so. Be on the lookout for The Longest Journey 2.

GK2 was by far the best. Game of the year. It showed how to use video to make a good game. Unfortunately using video means hiring actors and the costs are to high.

Participant(re: Christmas wasn’t Christmas without Sierra!)
Dan couldn’t be any more right. Christmas truly wasn’t Christmas unless I got a new Sierra game. I would also sit in front of the PC all day playing until mom yelled at me to turn it off. I remember the first videogame stores and I would always go in looking for the next Sierra game.
Sierra is the reason I love PC’s. If it wasn’t for them, I truly wouldn’t be where I am today.
So to Ken and Roberta……many many many thanks. I wish there were more people like you.

Participant(re: re: Sierra box cover artists) There are a LOT of changes coming to this website.
1) I completely rewrote the message board system.
2) I rewrote the menu system
3) I added a new serverAll of this goes effective sometime in the next two weeks. Expect problems in the first couple of days after the upgrade. I do plenty of testing locally, but no matter what I do, the real world tends to behave differently than my laptop.
You should see some immediate benefits:
– The current system IS NOT search-engine friendly. I’ve known this for years, but didn’t really want the extra traffic. This next upgrade “opens to the door” to the search engines, and will raise the traffic here 10-fold, at least. Hopefully that will be a good thing.
– The current bulletin board system is buggy and slow. The new one is lightning fast, looks much better and will hopefully be less buggy.I may post a link early next week to my beta server so that people can start “shaking down” the new code.

Really? you have some amazing collection over there… and some work you put into it! way to go!
Why won’t you submit your website to the [ Musuem ] -> [ Cool Sierra Links ] page – ?
I think they should create a new category – collectors’ websites – and include your website there (as well as already-listed collectors’ websites such as Vintage-Sierra )Unknown,Unknown
Participant(re: Sierra box cover artists)
Hmm… I can’t find the link anymore! I don’t have it on record and the site search function isn’t giving me any luck. Perhaps Ken could improve the way the search function works with more options sometime (date, user, must / any / partial options for keywords, etc).

Participant(re: re: Where can I find music like the opening song?)
Well, I meant like groups or bands that play similiar types of music, but the QFG4 theme is pretty cool as well…
Thanks!

Participant(re: Larry: Magna Cum Laude)
Having first learned about sex from LSL1 (okay, maybe that’s pushing it, but I was certainly too young to be playing it), I’ve been anticipating this game for a while. It’s really too bad that Sierra didn’t involve Al at all and led him on, I think it’s obvious when you play the game that he didn’t have anything to do with it.
Without comparing it too much to other Larry’s, I can say that the game is quite funny. Unfortunately, you’ll miss quite a bit of the humor because you’re too busy guiding sperm around obstacles. And there are definitely plenty of homages to the Larry of old (Lefty’s Too, multiple jokes about 16 colors, a bulletin board featuring past ladies). The mini-games are pretty repetetive, but fortunately, they’re not annoying or overly tedious. And you can always do some drinking (in game) to make them more challenging if you need.
Now, the lack of Al’s influence… I guess it comes down to the fact that this game relies much more heavily on the “Adult” aspect of Larry. That is, the entire game is littered with vulgarities and overly crude jokes. Much of what I love about Larry is that while it’s adult in nature, it doesn’t try to push that envelope or say “Hey, this is an ADULT game. Yeah, for GROWN ups, not KIDS.” Al Lowe can be funny without resorting to American Pie-type jokes. The humor in the new game is definitely Al influenced, but it’s obviously imitation.
That said, I am enjoying the game. I have about 30% completed and have heard you can finish the game with less than 80%. In all, as long as you KNOW you aren’t getting a point-and-click adventure game, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. (And they do reference point-and-click as well.) Hope you enjoy, and I’m interested to hear other thoughts.

Participant(re: RE: Any other suggestions?)
Thanks for the reply, but I still have some problems. I created the bootdisk and used it in rebooting my computer, and it succeeded and all, but now when I try to play SQ4 it begins without claiming I need more memory. However, it seems to freeze, or else it’s just really slow. The hand icon of SQ4 shows up on the screen as my cursor, and of course the mouse doesn’t respond, but the game doesn’t begin either. I’ve waited quite I while to see if it was just loading slowly, but it just remains a black screen with the yellow hand cursor; the Sierra logo never appears.
So perhaps the memory problem got fixed, but apparently something else is wrong with it now.
I’d still like to to go ahead and try to incorporate into my system the config.sys and autoexec.bat that your .cmd file creates on the bootdisk, in order to see whether the game really is freezing or not (I can’t really tell without mouse support). However, I have no idea how to do this. Could you be so kind as to explain it to more or refer me to a site where it is explained? Thanks for your help.P.S. I did have to change the .cmd file to a .exe file for Win98, just to let you know,

I really, REALLY loved the Neo-Gregorian/Gothic opening to Phantasmagoria. I was wondering, does anyone know of any cool groups that play creepy, choir-based music like that? I know Midnight Syndicate for instance does a lot of Gothic type stuff, but their pace is a bit slow for me…
Dunno why Sierra didn’t just compose a few more songs while they had the choir and release it as a soundtrack. That or at least put the opening theme on one of the game CDs as a playable track.
Course, then again maybe they did I forgot to check? Hmm… (goes to dig out his copy of Phantas…)

Participant(RE: Any other suggestions?) An old Win98 bootdisk I had from a few years ago I tweaked a bit and made a quick floppy image of it. Get it
Link: here(http://members.cox.net/ogdenwb/bootdisk.zip)
.Simply unzip the files into a directory and run the makedisk.cmd to make the floppy. With this setup, you should get approximately 638K (out of 655K) available memory. Of course, that memory quantity is w/o sound, mouse drivers.
Edit: I already posted and forgot this was Win98. The .cmd extension may not work in 98, I can’t remember. If not, simply rename it to .bat instead.
However, as collector said, you need to have sound drivers installed for DOS to utilize sound. The main point of this rather is to check that there now will be sufficient memory to run the game since you had problems with not enough memory available, and if so, to incorporate this config.sys and autoexec.bat into your own, which probably contain your sound drivers, et al. Disregard the SCSI drivers and Zip driver stuff. I had to have those in my old bootdisk to use a SCSI CDROM and Zip drive at the time.
Hope it helps…

Participant(re: re: re: Any other suggestions?)
Try adding the following two lines to both your CONFIG.SYS and your CONFIG.DOS files (open them in Notepad):
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
assuming that you have Windows installed in a WINDOWS folder on your C: drive.
This should free up some memory for you. Also, you will need DOS drivers for your sound card installed, if you want to have the music in DOS, even when running DOS games in Windows. If you can’t find the DOS drivers, you can try playing it in Windows with VDMSound for Windows 9x. Keep in mind, however, that VDMS for Win9x is in very early development. You can find VDMS for Win9x and help with it here:

Participant(re: re: Any other suggestions?)
Yes, I’ve tried DOSbox, but with the CD version of SQ4, when I try to run it DOSbox freezes up. I also have the older diskette version of SQ4, and I get get that to run on DOSbox, though it’s a little slow. But I want the speech capability that’s only on the CD, and everything I’ve tried doesn’t work. When, I restart in MSDOS mode and install it there, then try to run the programme, the game fails to launch, citing to little free memory. It does start to read the CD, so it’s hasn’t anything to do with the CD drive, I don’t think. Anyone else know how to free up unnecessary memory in DOS?
thanks for any help

Have you tried DosBox? With DOSBox, I can run SQ4 DOS version on my “ancient” Solo 1100 laptop. It’s a bit slow, but works.
It probably would work at speed on your desktop, though.

Participant(re: Shadow of Yserbius cheat?)
Sorry, only “cheat” I ever remembered from that game was the one that allowed low level characters to sneak into high level areas with a stronger party. Kind of useless now, isn’t it?
I recently got my hands on a copy of SoY and FoT and I have to say that I miss the online functions. A LOT! And it isn’t just because I miss the chatter, or that a party would be helpful in exploring the whole of the dungeon and maybe keeping me alive for a little while longer….it’s the fact that I cannot, for the life of me, find any information on the various items in the game: What they do, what special properties they might have, basic equipment stats.
I do remember coming across a website while searching for the game, where someone was trying to resurrect the online play. But that was probably little more than a pipedream, due to lack of interest, funding, and copyright laws.
