Exciting things in game development are cool to talk about, and probably a good thing. So let’s talk about them, and I’ll leave the LBCBR nastiness behind. What new, exciting game development happenings are you working on? Sounds like you have some interesting ideas.

Participant(re: re: Idea for you Ken)
This idea has always been a good one. Why it hasn’t been put to full force is a mystery to me. There are so many emulators for video game systems, etc.
It would be nice to have a Windows based program called ” The Sierra Game Emulator” In my wishes it would do this. Of course you would start it like any other Windows app. But let’s say you start the app. You have a Windows like GUI where you could “install” games that you already own. Say you own Police Quest 2, and King’s Quest V CD. You could select those games from a list, and then click “install” The program itself would prompt you to insert the media needed, and then you are done. You then have a list of “isntalled” playable games in your list. Select it, click play, and the app automatically set’s your computer’s resolution, color depth, and sets up the needed sound emulation to make the game work, and work as well as it was made to.
Here is the thing. We could ask Ken to do this, but I can’t blame him for a damn second for not wanting to. “Sierra” (whatever that means today) should have such an app available, at the very least for purchase, along with bargain priced versions of the games intended for such an app.
For Vivendi or whatever you want to call it today, to not offer even BASIC MEANS to play the games their own purchase of this company was based on, is simply insane. If a group of fans would give a crap enough to make such an app FOR FREE, then how much more odd and wrath-inducing is it for Vivendo (did I say that?) to not offer such an app?
The only thing that makes me sad is that Ken wishes he would have started something more fun than this site, and the underlying software that he spends his free time developing. Ken, the lack of fun you are having is nothing compared to the sense of closure you have given fans such as myself after your sale of Sierra. You have closed a wound by simply giving us a means by which we can get those last thoughts out, and business or not, we deserve that much, even though you do not OWE it to us.
So thank you, and don’t go away again.

I do admit defeat. Brandon is the admin here and if he doesn’t want to have an open conversation about Laura Bow, online gaming, and copyright, that’s his call. I’ll still post on other boards… just not Game Developers Public (I don’t have access to the Game Developers-Team forum so that’s not an issue).

I’ve heard about scoring bugs with PQ2, but every time I’ve played I’ve always gotten exactly 300, never more. I wonder if there’s some sort of bug in different versions.
I wrote a pointcheck back in 1997:
http://www.the-spoiler.com/ADVENTURE/Sierra/police.2.4.html
If you have any idea, I’d be interested to know where your scoring differs from mine.

ParticipantNow here is a brief history of the Jodo Kast/CBequest story
About a year ago on a gaming forum, Jodo posted an intention to remake The Colonel’s Bequest. Interest was generated, and a nice dialogue was started amongst a collected bunch of amateur game makers. One posted a VGA conversion picture he had made of the Mansion Exterior in CBquest, and then Jodo immediately said “Good, now make all the rest!”
Which was met with some confusion, as the memeber clearly said he couldn’t work full time on the project, and merely posted the picture to help give an idea of what could be done. Jodo then got very strange with many of us, and took it to mean people were “on the team” if they expressed an interest, or even an opinion on the project. He then released a demo, which was one room in AGS, featuring a wacky-photoshop-filtered building exterior, and using the AGS Roger sprite, you found a key. The next demo was 7 ripped SCI screens from the Original Colonel’s Bequest – except they all scrolled. Still using the Roger sprite. He claimed a new demo would be out by Christmas, 2003. He got increasingly hostile and lost his sense of logic. Christmas came and went, no demo. His claim, which is now legendary amongst some, “It’s on Kazaa”. So, no demo, rude behavior, putdowns of other fan groups, and finally a geocities website later, Jodo kind of left circles. His geocites site had one 3-D rendered Background, that honestly wasn’t bad, and a punch of stock “Poser” characters on it. He claimed to move the setting to modern day (obviously NOT grasping the humourous names of the characters, which reflected celebrities and well known socialites of the time.) Anyway, a man named Powerhouse (who seemed to be Jodo in disguise) posted a message CLAIMING to be the reason why Sam and Max 2 was shut down, and any attempts to refute this were met with the same rude behavior.
Anyway, some of us feel he promises much to fans, and delivers nothing but hot air. Which wouldn’t be so bad, if he wasn’t rude in the process. That’s just a bit of history for you.

Participant(re: Idea for you Ken) The old Sierra games are beginning to be unrunable on XP: such as Torin’s Passage.
My suggestion is for you to put your programming skills to work and write a utility that helps to run them on xp.Thanks for the suggestion — but I’ll pass. Perhaps some other fan will consider doing this. I’m bogged down on my website builder (
Link: http://ww.talkspot.com(http://ww.talkspot.com)
). I wish I had started a project that was a lot more fun — but, it’s too late now. I have a lot of time into this project and need to see it through to its end (whatever that may be).-Ken W

That would be great if we could change the colors. I am at the age now (48) where my eye muscles do not focus correctly. Heading towards glasses.

Participant(re: About the Beta board) Yup … I’m trying to decide now if I should allow each user to tweak the color scheme, or make a system-wide change.

ParticipantI have a very hard time seeing red on a dark background. I really need more contrast than that. Just my opinion.

ParticipantPaul,
A big plus to all of this is the passion involved. These are old school adventure games we’re talking about. Remakes have already been released, so it’s not going to end anytime soon.
If I can secure financing for my own online murder mystery I could ditch the whole Colonel’s Bequest tie-in. But since I don’t have any Sponsors, I’m basing it on Colonel’s Bequest so more people want to play it.
I’ll keep you updated, but Paul is right it’s seems odd. I’m more interested in talking about online game development, than ‘Top 10 Reasons why Jodo should Stop making Games’.

ParticipantI’ve read through this thread and I’m kind of lost. Heres what I gather:
1) Some guy is making a game about Lara Bow
2) He does not have the copyright or permission to use the name/characters
3) A group of people he knows from other forums have continued their arguements here
4) A giant flame war commencesOk I think a Lara Bow fan game would be fun, however I tend to agree with everyone else that it should not be done without Vivendi’s consent. Believe it or not, but if you try to release that game it will be stomped on. There were countless before you doing the same with other sierra games and many met that same fate.
Why not make a new character in the likeness of LB? It can’t be too hard to use your own talent to do so. I mean, there wasn’t anything truley needed about the name. A common misconception is that sierra’s names are needed to create good adventure games. That is false, I mean no one had a clue who Graham was in King’s Quest 1….but it remained a hit due to the content. If you create a decent enough character I’m sure your game will make them just as famous.
As for this war, I don’t understand why it must continue on Ken’s message board. I think you should all just let it go. Why is it such a crime to post about his game? I don’t want to take any sides on this issue but he hasn’t done a thing wrong. If you don’t believe he is working on it, so be it. Most games do take years to complete you know…even fan ones. If he fails so what, it’s no hair off your backs.

ParticipantThat has been asked many times over at the AGDI forums. According to the team, there’s no date set, but it might be released in 2005.

I did a check on all the members of the AGDI forums under the memberlist. There is no “fan” called “S.S. Totenkopf”. While there used to be one in this forum, there isn’t any in AGDI. You’re using him as an excuse for your name-calling, aren’t you? You can’t claim that you mistook me for him, because all you had to do was to click on my username to see that I never posted in any other thread at that time, let alone post as “S.S. Totenkopf”.
I’m sick of your lies. Why don’t you just admit that you called me “S.S. Totenkopf” in order to insult me, like how you called Erpy “Troller” when he did nothing wrong to you.
You can’t get away with lying forever. Sooner or later, even your fans will find out that you’ve been lying to them all this while.
