ParticipantYou are free to attach weight to, and believe, whatever you choose. I would advise against using the financial success of the PQ1 remake to defend your position, though–as would I also suggest that perhaps Police Quest was about more than “sparkling wit” and that calling Open Season “unplayable” is not far from ignorance. I suppose you’re going to tell me that Blue Force was a genre-defining masterpiece next.
But hey, ignorance is bliss, and no one said you can’t live in your happy little world, don’t let me rain on your parade with reality. π

This game was great fun and brought back a lot of good memories for me. π
I had the opportunity to interview the Peasant’s Quest team a few months ago for Adventure Gamers. They seem like a fun group of guys. There is a link below to the article if anyone’s interested in reading it.

ParticipantBy the time PQ3 was produced, a great amount of people worked on each of Sierra’s games. That is obvious. However, Jim Walls has (and still is) always been perceived as the brain behind Police Quest – the invidual from which spawned the chief creative drive behind that franchise. That didn’t happen by accident, which is why I find it impossible to attach much weight to your statements.
Anyway, I don’t believe we will ever know the truth behind Walls’s split from Sierra. A few months ago I was related an explanation that with some thinking makes a whole lot of sense. (For fear of offending anyone, I don’t intend on repeating it. Don’t ask.)
And regarding the PQ1 remake – it was a sad, unnecessary remake (i.e. ripoff) of a glorious game. As with the SQ1 and LSL1 remakes it failed to make any money. And to further strengthen Jim Walls’s position, we may also point out the quite unplayable (i.e. not much fun) Open Season. It clearly lacked the sparkling wit of the Walls Police Quests.

ParticipantOops….
I confused Rob Lowe, and Robby Benson. It was Robby who worked with us. He did the voice of the “Beast” in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
I’ve corrected the home page.

The music is embeded in the sound file (RESOURCE.SFX.) You can hear what is in it with The Game Audio Player:
http://bim.km.ru/gap/view.asp?id={039D5BBB-8B77-4930-8859-1C48806E663C}
You will have to wade through all of the sound effects to hear the music, though.

ParticipantI think your loyalty to Jim Walls is very misplaced. You may not be aware that, at least as far as I understand, he had almost nothing to do with Police Quest 3.
I don’t wish to speculate on needless tabloid gossip, and I’m sure if Ken wished for any of the details to be told he would share it himself, but I am led to believe from numerous sources through the years that Jim left PQ3 in a total state of disarray when he abruptly quit and almost the entire game had to be redone. He had nothing to do with the PQ1 remake either.
So I wouldn’t go making Jim Walls king of the world or anything. I like the Police Quest series as much as the next guy, probably more, just trying to make sure we keep some perspective here. The greatness of the PQ games is the product of a whole lot more people than Jim Walls.

Hi Tom,
I’m not sure if you will check this topic again and if you still need the manuals – I have the manual from Shivers 1… If you like – I could scan and send it to you. (It is infact from the “Sierra Originals” series, but I believe that it should be the same as the original game manual – I got the game late and was not able to purchase the first original copy. I found one just 4 years ago and bought it immediately π So, if you wish – I can send you the manual… Just post a reply here.
Bye and.. take care π

I was here first. π
I will give it a try at some point but I don’t have the disk version of this game so I might not be able to duplicate the bug. Lemme know if you are able to, now I’m curious if this is a real thing or if I made it up. It’s a very strong memory but it was 15 years ago! Try dusting the ashtray for fingerprints before you get the hitlist. What I remember was getting a print but having a different message about it than the one for the rest of the prints (the different message was what made me think it was a bug), and being able to collect the print more than once and/or submit it more than once as evidence.

Participant(re: RAMA: Do any of you remember that one?)
Hi to all,
In fact, I purchased Rama three years ago, since I adored playing adventure games with my friends each saturday night π I fell in love with both parts of Shivers and when I saw this Sierra title in the store – bought it immediately.
Unfortunately, I didn’t like this game very much. Maybe the problem was that I have just played Shives 2 which was absolutely incredible. I really found annoying the Math puzzles. Also, there were many places that had to put some plates in order to get access to the cities (or something like that) and these plates were always different… I didn’t enjoy that. I did not get until the end – it was really hard at some points and there were some ridiculous puzzles.
However, I have the game next to me now and may give it another chance π

You might look into something like DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/)

ParticipantNooooooooooooo!!! Stop ripping off classic games by “updating” them when they are in need of no such thing! And no sequel without Jim Walls – PLEASE!!!

ParticipantI second the notion for the series to be reinvented. It is because of these games that I dreamed of graduating high school to become a police officer, and am currently waiting until January when my academy will begin. I have searched the internet for years in hopes that somebody would remake or make an unnofficial sequel to the games (similar to some of the Kings Quest and Space Quest games) however it looks pretty grim. I am not a programmer, and have no experience doing this, so all I can do is pray that somebody will someday.

Hmmm, interesting. I’ll have to fire up my disk version again. Though I played the disk version a few times and never got over 300, that pointcheck and all subsequent plays for me have been the Collection version, so it’s worth a shot.
Thanks Emily–and by the way, are you stalking me or something? π

ParticipantI just had to say this. Thank you so much. I know you hear it all the time but I just had to let you know how you guys have influenced my entire life. Especially you Roberta (sorry Ken :D) but you are my inspiration. Iβm a student Game designer just trying to follow in your footsteps, and trust me they are way too big for me to fill.
Being the only girl designer in my class can make me feel disheartened at times, but then I remember all the awesome stuff you did and how you both changed the gaming world; and it really truly inspires me not to give up. Thank you, thank you so much. I donβt know how far Iβll get in this business, I can only dream to create games as awesome as yours. You rock.

Participant(re: re: re: pq2 help!!)
Glad you got the help you needed.
In (sort of) related news, I have *finally* gotten my hands on the manual for the PQ collection. I will try to scan and uplode some of the documentation we don’t have on this site yet (not today, but soon).

Participant(re: re: Police Quest Casebook)
If memory serves, there is a bug in PQ2 that allows you to get multiple fingerprints, I think at Marie’s house. I encountered this when I played it years and years ago. I see on your point list there are no fingerprints at Marie’s. If I remember correctly you could go back to her house and collect them more than once. I think they were on or near the ashtray. I could try to duplicate it sometime. This was an old DOS version we had on floppies… I don’t know if it’s the same version that was later included on the collection.

I ran Torin’s Passage in XP, no problem. What issues are you having?
There are fans working on a Sierra emulator like you described. Sorry I can’t think of the name of it at the moment.
