ParticipantInteresting new stuff Ken. I’ve just been so busy with school that I haven’t been around much. I can’t wait until the end of this semester – if I pass all my courses, I should be graduating!
I’ve only taken a quick look at things but the discussion boards definitely feel more like message boards now. I think it’s the right choice to make the message boards have a different feel and system as it were from the rest of the site. If I run across anything in terms of bugs and suggestions I’ll let you know.

Participanthello again,
I need to read your posts better, I feel like I’m doing post-tag!
I am running the Windows version, thanks for keeping up with it!
Thanks for the help, I will get hold of you if I decide to go that route.
THANKS AGAIN!!

ParticipantI’m just a bit concerned with your slavish devotion to Jim Walls when there really is no evidence of any sort to support such a position rationally, and I’m merely suggesting that there may be a lot you don’t realize about the situation with Jim. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the actual writing in Police Quest 1 VGA was a hundred times more coherent, more substantial, and truer to the story than any of the previous three PQ games. And as much as you may believe Open Season was a failure at strong storytelling–which I can sorta agree with–Blue Force wasn’t much better so why would you try to tie that back to Jim?
I’m really not trying to start a fight here, I promise. Your post just threw up a red flag for me.
p.s. Thank you for acknowledging Adventure Gamers, but it’s not “my” site–it belongs to the adventure community. 🙂

ParticipantAre you playing the DOS version or the Windows version?
If it’s Windows I can send you a save for the beginning of Ch.4 but not right away. I am playing through again in bits and pieces but I think I’m only up to Ch.3.

ParticipantEvan, there is nothing in my post to warrant the animosity in your reply. We’re just having a friendly conversation here!
And no way in hell am I ignorant with regard to adventure games.
Please realise that your opinion is in no way “better” than mine. Regardless of whether you run your own adventure game website. Certainly, that doesn’t make your opinion more “qualified” than mine, or bestow you with some kind of almighty authority, right?
And I don’t mind if you rate Open Season. That’s fine with me. I just don’t agree with you. I suggest you go and read over some of the hotly debated threads on this site. We’re all (or most of us, at least) big fans of classic Sierra. And we’re all just giving our opinions on various matters pertaining (chiefly) to the games of that era. In that way, each of us is doing his or her little bit to keep the history, the emotions, the dream alive.

ParticipantThese timer problems are due to a lack of foresight from the original programmers of SCI. There are a lot of other games from around the same time that do not have speed problems even when running on blindingly fast PC’s.
They could’ve made timer based puzzles run off the screen refresh rate (60-70 hertz in most cases ever since CGA was around) or the internal clock of the PC. These were extremely common techniques that a lot of other developers were using back in the 80’s and 90’s. This would’ve future proofed their code for decades and there would be none of these timer related bugs that everyone has to struggle with now.

ParticipantJohann, the OP asked how to reinvent Police Quest, not remake it. There is a big difference between the meaning of those two words.
My opinion here: The problem with having a non-violent Police game is that the majority of the commercial gamer market is made up of teenage boys with short attention spans and limited intelligence. So the only games that keep them happy are simple click and shoot games like FPS games where no-intelligence is required. If you die just reload from your save game 30 seconds ago and keep on trying until you finally succeed. They do not have the attention span to actually work at a problem to solve it. And judging from various message boards, most of them do not have the basic literacy skills to actually understand an adventure game properly.

ParticipantI also just noticed that if I am viewing all the new posts (all categories) then reply to one, there’s no option to go back to all the new posts without first going to the home page. The “newest messages” at the top of the screen only shows the newest messages in whatever category I just posted in.
Another thing, when I click on a post through the New Posts list, I can’t see any way to reply to it. The only way I figured out was by seeing the whole thread, then replying to one of the posts on that thread. Can there also be a Reply button on the individual post, to skip this extra step?

ParticipantWhat version of the game are you playing? (Mysteries pack version or standalone? Windows or DOS?) Saves will only work with the same version of the game, so I can maybe send you a save from ch4 but only if we are using the same version.
To put aside your saves, as described above, you need to save the saves themselves (GK2SG.000, GK2SG.001, etc.) and the directory file (GK2SG.DIR).

ParticipantCan anyone explain the process to me how to extract saved games (or directories of saved games) from Gabriel Knight 2 for later use?
Also, if anyone has any to offer, I’d like to have a saved game of the VERY beginning of chapter 4 with Grace (CD 4). I am missing my CD 3; i must have thrown it away a few years ago after being frusturated at it not working (for a full story and how you may be able to help me in that region, see my topic in Bugs forum over in Sierra Chat in this message board system) — but if I can’t get hold of CD 3 then I’ll just have to read a summary about it and play on with CD 4. I would appreciate it though if anyone had a saved game for the beginnng of CD 4.
Thanks!

ParticipantAlright, I played this one too but… I never actually beat it, called the hotline don’t know how many times ringing up my parents phone bill =P I could never ping the harbor and I know thats insanely close to the end but it never worked no matter what I did. Erked me to no end.

Participant– I noticed there’s an outline of blue around the Reply button. I don’t recall seeing a class for the button; when you click on it changes purple so it’s the link color.
Maybe set border to 0?
– Also on this reply screen, it shows the menu, then the reply box, then a biiig space before the Edit box – above the preview/help/cancel buttons.
– Also I recommend a disclaimer or filetype restrictions so nobody uploads an EXE file, then runs it on the server using the URL to access it. TXT and DOC and Image files are OK, but Zip files have the potential to be dangerous.
Just my two cents

ParticipantI changed the color to blue and it is working fine for my old eyes.

ParticipantHey Ken,
Would it be possible to put the option to change pages at the bottom of a thread also? It’s a minor suggestion for lazy people like me who don’t like to scroll back up to go to the next page

I just noticed something else too; I’m not sure if its intended though. In ‘My Account’, if I try to see the last 25 messages that I posted, it only shows the last 25 from the particular area I am in. For instance, if I choose ‘Museum’ from the main page, I will only see the last 25 messages I made in that particular area. To see what I posted in ‘Game Chat’, I would have to switch to that section.

ParticipantI don’t have the manual handy, but until you find it here is a hint… just keep on trying Jesse Bains until it finally works. He is the one with long hair I think. Is that what you’re referring to?
Just saw this was answered in a different thread

Participant“So let’s talk about them, and I’ll leave the LBCBR nastiness behind. What new, exciting game development happenings are you working on? Sounds like you have some interesting ideas.”
Steven,
Yeah let’s talk about it! Unfortunately we can’t talk here as Brandon is listening. I’m just about to post an update now at Laura Bow Investigative Reporter Group: To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/
We just happen to like murder mysteries… Dagger of Amon Ra, other NON-Sierra murder mysteries, you know. Colonel’s Bequest just happens to be the candidate ‘most’ in need of an update. Opinions vary. My opinion rarely does.
Colonel’s Bequest is BEST run in the following environment: Running under Windows 98 with VDMSound. XP is OK if you use DOS BOX, but I’m sure you can find an old 486 that will suit your purposes for Classic Gaming for less than $100! Just make sure it has VGA graphics like VESA 2, Windows 3.11 WFW, Sound Card.
Colonel’s Bequest was strange because it created it’s graphics in VECTOR mode. Check out SCI Studio and play through the drawing of the mansion… it’s like watching the artist draw the scene out.

ParticipantThis has more than likely been posted quite a few times, but I just wanted to thank everyone at Sierra for their great efforts in making the best games I have ever played in my life. No games now compare or probably will never compare to what Sierra members made. It is amazing how a game can have an influence on life, and Sierra games are the only ones I care about. Every game that you guys made had that magical/extroardinary feeling to it. Every series made was remarkable from King’s Quest to Space Quest from Quest for Glory to Police Quest and so on… Two of the greatest games were King’s Quest IV and Quest for Glory IV. King’s Quest IV to me is the best work sierra has ever done. The entire game is perfect, same as QFGIV.
It is sad to know now that Sierra is gone except for us fans, and Sierra employees making sites for us fans to talk about them on. I have played Sierra games since 1988 when I was two years old and still play them today. My parents had a Tandy 1000 computer and my dad tought me how to load the games. I wish they could make a comeback, but maybe we fans can possibly make a difference. Who knows maybe their is a chance in the future? Anyways, thank you Ken, Roberta, and entire Sierra staff for making great games that I enjoyed, and still enjoy!Unknown,Unknown
ParticipantIf you are using Soundblaster as your Audio card, and get the “Unable to initialize your audio hardware” error, try downloading a fix called “SOUND BLASTER MIDI PORT UTILITY” it worked for me, you can get it at this webpage http://queststudios.com/quest/Utilities.html
I don’t know whether it works for all Sierra games, but it worked for my KQ5 (DOS version) on XP Pro -
