Ooo KQ6, one of my favorite games 😀 When you’re behind the pillar in the castle, you use the nightingale to distract the guards.. they leave, you take the nail and leave the painting on the floor. You can then use the nail to open the trunk in Al Hazred’s room to find the evidence letters which Saladin (a Collie) then sees. The rest sounds pretty good to me 🙂 Such a great game! BTW, did you know Saladin’s voice is the same as Frollo in
Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame? purty cool 😉

Try deleting your installed KQ5 folder and reinstall the windows game from scratch. You will need to set your resolution down, first, to install it.

do you have the kq moe patch? if not you can download it here
    http://sierra.com/downloadfile.do?gamePlatformId=284&mediaid=5598

it should fix the problem, from the ReadMe file it contains:
“Feather of Truth bug: Intermittent lock-ups after obtaining the Feather of Truth were
    removed.”

This is a common problem with the DOS version of KQ5. Usually the Sierra DOS games have fewer problems than the Windows games, but the sound is easier to get right on the Windows version of KQ5. You can try using a different audio driver. If you can get the DOS version working, you can avoid the “Out of Heap…” error. Try running the game in DOSBox.

I have managed to find the copy protection, but was wondering if there was a PDF of the original manual, that was all.

Most of the copy protection info is posted on this site. Look in the King’s Quest Museum area of the site.

In my experience, the dual dos/windows Sierra CD-ROM releases from the early- to mid-nineties are all much more stable running in pure DOS rather than some form of Windows.

Hi, the following configuration runs just about everything on my PC (1,2 Ghz Duron running Win98SE). It was created using the Boxer frontend with the newest version of DOSBox (0.62). Simply copy and paste into dosbox.conf (a plain text file you can create with notepad).

Depending on the speed of your PC, you can replace the scaler=advmame2x line with scaler=normal2x. Advmame2x is a filter that smooths 320×200 graphics out to look like 640×400, but (in the case of DOSBox) requires lots of processing power.

You’ll also note that it mounts drives D: and E: as CD-ROM drives. You may want to change that depending on your own system’s configuration.

Lastly, keep in mind that (in my experience) even on very powerful PC’s, DOSBox is incapable of displaying full screen, polygonal graphics, SVGA graphics, or games with full-screen moving 2D graphics (e.g. Ultima 7) at a good, playable speed. There are also some games with CD-ROM issues, e.g. Inherit the Earth which only seems to run 100% on PC’s with genuine MSDOS and MSCDEX installed (i.e. won’t work in FreeDOS either).

    The config file starts here:

I finished Rama, but I had to consult a hint book for the last part. I still have the 3 CD set. I went and read the complete Rama series written by Clarke. I think there were 4 novels altogether, and what strange ending.

Odd, I have never heard of anyone having this problem with KQ5. Which version of the game are you running, floppy, CD or from one of the collections? If you are running the DOS version of the game, you can try playing it in DOSBox.

Hey! I was wondering if you guys know of a CD talkie release of this game. Because MobyGames lists that there is a talkie version, but I was certain that there had never been a CD release. Can anyone clear this up for me, please?

Thank you very much. Talk to you later!

One thing I notice Ken that should be easy to fix is that the discussion boards are not in the order that they used to be.

Also, when you goto Sierra Chat or Games Chat and you have the list of message boards, I would make each message board box closer to the same width as the red box surrounding them all. The thing is, no one wants to scroll down 3 or 4 full page lengths to see all the options. You might want to consider removing some info that is on that listing. It’s mostly fairly obvious what each discussion board is about, and all the extra info hampers navigation.

No harm done. Though I don’t see any indication in my posts of the slavish dedication to Jim Walls you repeatedly mention. Oh well, to each his own.

Not deliberately … but, I may have forgotten to copy some data. The old message boards, are still here on the site. If you can think of something that was in one, I can go look for it.
