    Brandon:

Did you see the existing Admin system for moving topics? It gives you a ton of power. I need to make it a bit more intuitive, but it works great.

I have plans to create a new concept of forum administrator, so that you can grant administrator priviledges to individual users of a forum, without making them a system administrator.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll work on it!

OK Ken, here’s a feature request. For admins, make a pull-down menu when you are viewing a topic, and it says “move this topic to”, and it just gives you a list of all the boards that are available for me to move the topic to. That would really make moving messages in the wrong place very easy.

Here’s something else. When composing a message, also have a button that says “post” right away, instead of making the user go through the “preview” stage. It’s some extra button-clicking that probably many people find bothersome.

Hey Ken, another thing I noticed – this time nothing to be fixed! I just noticed that you eliminated the “title” of each post and instead, each topic just has it’s own title. I like that!

I have just replayed the game, after many years. My impression of it can be found earlier in this thread, and it hasn’t changed. If anything, it only grew stronger. More than any other Sierra game, “Conquest of the Longbow” feels like an epic film – mostly because it tells a bigger-than-life story from start to finish, with such a rich historical background, in which the fantasy elements were so well implanted.
Speaking of historical background, I remember reading somewhere that the musical score of the game (as I have already said, I think it’s Mark Seibert’s finest) is adpted from actual ballads written and composed on Robin Hood. Does anyone know if there’s any truth to this?

I cannot possibly see someone being a diehard fan of the origonal KQ and not Loving this little game! It was fantastic to play. I was suprised I still have my adventure skills. What a great game. Did anyone notice that the cheated a bit on graphics, like nightfall. They didn’t exactly use the 16 color pallet. I’m glad they did this. I downloaded the .swf to my harddrive and added it to my KQ collection. It may not be an actual KQ game, but I feel that it is now part of the same realm to some degree. Thank you guys at Homestar Runner What a great game. Please don’t stop here, make more!!! And share that Flash Based game engine, it’s great.

So, the only things we know for sure about LSL4 events are:

    1. Larry and Patti somehow leave the ‘real world’ and return to the ‘lsl world’
    2. Larry and Patti are separated (we dont know how)
    3. Larry has a shock and sufferes of amnesia

Sorry, I was just trying to stay on subject. As I said AGS is GREAT! I am playing around with it myself.

Ken, for all you’ve done you did create a BIG fanbase that still creates games. If you do not believe me you too should check out the AGS (Adventure Game Studio) site and see what your ‘children’ have done in your absence. Your like a Godfather to all of us.

    Billy

P.S. Check out Peasant Quest at http://www.homestarrunner.com too. That is the coolest thing I have seen since I played the KQ1 + 2(Made with AGS) remakes at AGDI.

    Billy…”

That’s a common reaction. However about half of the people who used to play adventure games would admit they always wanted to make their OWN adventure game.

Quite a number of people have already done it. If it’s not for you, that’s OK too. However it’s great to ‘share the magic’ and in my opinion — it’s a great way to tell a story!

It’s not as difficult as it sounds. If you can do DOS Batch programming (you remember MS-DOS…) then you can do AGS Scripting. Graphics can be stick figures, pictures of your 3 kids, maybe the background is your a photo of your backyard?

Ok, first step in AGS would be to make your kid walk around the screen depending on where you click it. If you can program it, you could make your children their own personalized adventure game!

Here’s hoping you have the time to make it 😉

Everyone should visit Al Lowe’s excellent site – http://www.allowe.com – lots of interesting stuff there, including the true reason as to why Sierra never published LSL4. Sierra did not lose the disks before the game was published. That’s a total myth, propagated mainly by Al Lowe himself. The short version of the true story is that there never was a LSL4.

LSL3 had a very definite ending. Al never intended on doing another Larry. For that reason, LSL3 was used to close the book on the series. However, so many people bugged Al for another sequel that at last he gave in and started working on the next one. The problem was now: how does one continue a series that has in effect ended? In order to fix this problem, Al started calling the next game LSL5. And in the process managed to skip out on his responsibility as storyteller to inform us as to all the complications that would lead Larry from LSL3 (where at the end Larry and Patti settle down to live happily ever after) to another skirt-chasing escapade.

Personally, I was immensely dissappointed with this whole development. Larry seemed a genuinely human and rounded character after playing through the original trilogy. Thereafter he just became a cartoon – a sort of charicature of the original character.

I very much doubt we will ever again see a Larry anywhere near as poignant as LSL3, or as genuinely witty and charming as LSL2.

    Man, I miss classic Sierra.

I recommend AGS (Adventure Game Studio 3) available at http://www.agsforums.com .

Here’s some info from their website: Adventure Game Studio (AGS for short) allows you to create your own point-and-click adventure games, similar to the early 90’s Sierra and Lucasarts adventures. It consists of an easy-to-use development environment, and run-time engine.
The game interface is fully customizable, although the classic Sierra interface is supported by default. You need no programming experience to make a game using AGS – setting most game options is just a matter of point-and-click (though scripting is of course available if you prefer). AGS manages most of the game so that you don’t have to – it provides load/save game functions, inventory management, and more.

Add in some interactions (ie. what happens when the player clicks on various things) and you’re done. You can even create a standalone EXE file containing your entire game, which you can then distribute.

So, how much does it cost? Nothing. That’s right, AGS is free, and you can even create commercial games with it (subject to license terms).

NOTE: AGS is not for everyone. To make more advanced parts of a game, such as cutscenes, you will need to be prepared to learn the scripting language. It is recommended that you have at least a basic knowledge of computers before attempting to use AGS – such as, you know what a PCX file is, you can think logically and you know the difference between your hard drive and your RAM.

You can use the links on the left to see AGS’s features, download games made using AGS, and more.

If you decide that AGS is for you, then visit the Download and Tutorial pages to get started.

I cut my teeth on King’s Quest. I used to BEG my parents to go to the mall so I could play KQ on the Tandy 1000 at Radio Shack! They finally got me one with both KQ1 and KQ2. Back then they used to self-boot. Remember that. Enough background, I came here to answer the origional question:

The older AGI “Classics” can be run via a program called NAGI. Tandy 3 voice sound is even emulated!!! This is a complete rewrite of the origional AGI engine that ran KQ1-KQ3 (a verson of KQ4) as well as many other of the similar releases of other series. You can find NAGI at: http://www.agidev.com/projects/nagi/  Another AGI rewrite is SARIEN (sound familiar?). You can find it here: http://www.mega-tokyo.com/sarien/  If your are looking for a community of support for playing older Sierra related games check out this site: http://www.classicgaming.com/agisci/  FREESCI is the project to do the same for the SCI games. It currently does not support the 256 color games. It can be found at: http://www.bripro.com/scistudio/index.php  SCIStudio is a Windows based game creation tool for creating true SCI based games EG: KQ4/5, SQ3/4 etc. So the projects you asked for are out there, but in the case of SCI, they have a long way to go. My wish for Ken is to consult these guys. Help ’em out Ken. They need technical data to go on. They’ll do the coding if they could just get the info they need to make it happen. Slip ’em some source code! Nobody’ll tell.

    Billy.

Colonel’s Bequest was my first computer gaming experience, and still remains one of my favorite games. So, I decided what better candidate then Laura Bow to draw. This was my first piece of artwork I used the computer for, so feel free to tell me how you think I did! And thanks to Roberta and Ken Williams for breathing magic into the computer game industry!

ok, in LLS(9) MCL, Larry Lovage has LLS4 The Missing Floppies on his deskstop computer (with a 5 1/4 floppy drive BTW). There is only one scene, and it shows Larry Laffer in front of a brick wall of some sort.

But there is another mention of LLS4 somewhere else. In Space Quest 4 The Time Rippers, we can read a story of the fate of the planet Xenon. Sometime after 2735, it says that they found a box floating in space with the words of no other than “Leisure Suit Larry” on it. The guys loaded the disks onto the planets mainframe which also controled the planet’s weather and factories, and a virus took over. A deep voice (Sludge Vohaul’s voice from SQ2) said “Wilco must DIE” and Vohaul took over the planet. Later in the SQ6 when Wilco dumps the infected file out of the mainframe, the file “LLS4” is the infected file. So LLS4 was the game box floating in space.

So….. the content of LLS4 is still a mystery, but how Sierra lost the game before it was published is solved….

I got stuck at KQ7 with a puzzle I could not solve, so I never continued to KQ8. I was sad to see the adventure games drop off to make way for sex and violence content in 3D. One thing that will be missed and probaly never come back is the scrolling screen layout. The beautifuly drawn artwork that was scanned into serveral pages was just breathtaking and KQ6 was full of them. I remember when Sierra offered customers to purchase some of the artwark copies like you would a painting, I am still kicking myself for not investing in one of those copies.

I liked KQ8 very much, but to be honest, i played it during one of the best periods of my life…

well the graphics and sounds were not that bad provided it was an old game (i don’t know when you played it), and connor was a quite cool guy…

as for ‘to king quest or not king quest’, i think it’s a cool wasy to ‘expand’ this universe… for example not all Myst games are around Atrus but they are all cool and preent some depth

i only wish it to be more consistent: you travel to the realms of the dead, but it’s totally different than KQ6 and makes it an entirely different universe

    …”

I’m going to try to buy LSL MCL sometime over the next few days. I played a few minutes of a demo that I downloaded, that was in German, and couldn’t tell much about it.

I’m looking forward to playing it, because I was a huge fan of the Leisure-Suit Larry series, and can’t wait to play another LSL game.

Unfortunately, all indications are that I will be angry as I play. Apparently, the new Sierra owners didn’t understand Larry. Neither Al nor I was ever consulted. Larry’s “magic” was that it knew where to stop. There is a fine line between humor that is gross and humor that is racy. Al knew where this line was, and was able to produce a series that was loved by BOTH male and female players. If you go back and look at the Larry games, the female characters may have been sexy, but they were also generally smart. Rarely were women portrayed as bimbos. Generally, the joke was on Larry, and the women were intelligent. Nudity was hinted at, but rarely shown. Bad language was hinted at, but never used. In the parts of the new Larry I saw, the language was offensive, and worst of all – it ddn’t seem funny! I’m not saying this well, but I think the developers never took the time to study what made Larry special, or understand the demographic of who was playing Larry.

I’ll still play the game, in the way that Matrix fans will see the next movie, regardless of whether the last one was good or not. At some point though, if the Larry games don’t change, I’ll stop buying them, as will others. Hopefully Vivendi will read the reviews and learn from them. Larry is an awesome franchise, and I’ve tried for a decade to buy the rights, so that I could make an animated film based on Larry. Perhaps Vivendi will see from the product sales that Larry fans are out there, and see from the reviews, that they built a bad product — and, call Al the next time.

Im not trying to flame but, Kevin, that was a horrible attempt to support Mask Of Eternity. The Adventure genre is not dead! Myst is still out there! (exile should have been the last), Syberia had fantastic graphics, as well as The Longest Journey (deemed the greatest Adventure game of the year by Pc Gamer). No offence Ken and Roberta, Ive loved your games ever since my family all sat down and tried to figure out why Cedric was such a whimp (haha) but King’s Quest 8 : Mask of Eternity was a horrible game. The graphics were horrible, the camera was even worse, the audio sucked, the music was sub par to the true Kings Quest scores and the gameplay and story were enough to stop me from even finishing. Oh and the lovely fact that it crashed every 5 minutes helped too.If it isnt SUPPOSED TO be KQ, then why on God’s green Earth is it Called KINGS QUEST!?!? The fact that it take place in Daventry is not just.Everyone has noticed the advances that the KQ series had made in their graphics engine (see pics below). They lept from KQ1 to KQ5 to KQ7. If you were to actually think about it, KQ8 was a step back in their graphics department. I would much prefer being able to make out CLEARLY every visible detail on Rosella’s face IN 2-D, rather than looking at Connor’s smudged ugly face. As for the appeasment of the gaming industry for violence and shooting, thats hardly the case. Any good game can be unique in its own way without the shooting. Personally Im sick of seeing all these Battlefield clones and war games. Theres only so many times you can defeat the Nazi’s and retaking Red Square. KQ8 SHOULD have been true to its name and stayed the same layout as the rest of the series, but still in 3D. I think its about time a TRUE King’s Quest 8 came out still involving the royal family. Possibly Rosella and Edgar or Alex and Cassima. King’s Quest 9: Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining There are endless possiblities for this series! KQ 7 opened the most posibilities. Roberta……Ken…….If your reading…….ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER………
    King’s Quest 1…….ahhhhhh 256 colors…..
    King’s Quest 5……..Now theres a classic!
King’s Quest 7……..Definitely the best looking
    King’s Quest 8………EWWWWW
